Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's the thread!

Not sure what the Random thread is all about? Well, here's the answer to all your questions.

It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

Congratulations to everyone who made Part 4 such a kickass thread!!!

And thank you to the ever generous, intelligent, lovely, and kind Nichole, who let me start the thread even though she won the last one. 🙂

It's 10PM - do I take a shower now or wake up 20 minutes earlier tomorrow morning (6:30 instead of 6:50) and do it then? Decisions, decisions ....
every minute of sleep counts

I always sleep in as late as i can

classes start tomorrow for me.... profs/instructors might be going on strike, though

Hey, felons in federal penitentiaries are an underserved community. I think he should definitely go for it on the grounds that he's an URM. If you tell me that he has an MCAT under 25 and a GPA under 3.0 with no medical experience, then he's going to be the perfect rags-to-riches story that inspires legions of other lemmings to jump off the exact same cliff.

Ok, on that satiric note, I'm outta here. FOR REAL. 😛 😴
 You used the word lemmings! Fantastic! Reminds me of the scence in chicken little where the lemmings couldn't find a cliff and were jumping from a park bench.

ok I'm looking for a flight. I found one but the layover is only 30 mins. Its an airport I fly through frequently with little problems but I just am worried that 30 mins isn't enough for the hubby if he's even late (its an early sun flight so I'm doubting there would be traffic issues). I worry too much. But 30 mins isn't bad, right?

Good morning randomites!

I hope you guys had a great weekend!

Hey Rad! Everyone was wondering where the other post leader went to this weekend 😉

Any insight on flights ...? 😀

Since the sun finally came out this weekend.....hubby and I decided to get out of town. Went to the shore on Saturday and went biking yesterday. My husband got a flat, though, so we had to walk 3 miles back to our car 😡

Been trying to get some studying done but I'm still so tired and sleepy 😴 😴

I think that's cutting it super short, mushy. 🙁 I try never to go less than an hour.

Yeah I just went with the 58 mins. The airport has no issues (its a smaller airport) but I went for the extra time. You never know ...

Oh and I LOVE seatguru.com. If you ever get the chance to check it out b/c you want the better seats, go for it.

And I'm pissed that now they are "selling" exit seats to those with "elite" membership 😡

Boo, that rather sucks about selling the exit row seats.

Yay! I have been super efficient this morning! I have already handled my electric, ordered my cable broadband, emailed my school about a technical difficulty setting up my email address, changed my auto insurance policy to reflect the fact that my car's going to be in storage, and made a payment on my consolidation loan b/c my deferment hasn't gone through yet (grrrr - the same company is handling my med school loans, you would think this would be a no-brainer)! I think that's everything I can take care of while sitting here... now I need to go out to do the rest of the things I need to do today. 🙂

Can I get some car advice? 🙂

I have a 1996 Toyota Avalon with 100k miles. It is in for "routine maintenace" right now. Of course, there is buttloads of stuff wrong with it (valves, belts, etc.) that is going to run 1500-2000 bucks. I just put 1500 into it last year. It is a good car and still works fine, etc., but I am starting to wonder if I am going to hit the point where it isn't worth putting another 2 grand into it and should start thinking about getting another car.

Also, if I do decide to start looking for a new car, I will definitely come to you folks for advice because I know we have some awesome car knowledge around here. 🙂 Thanks for your thoughts! I am in a quandry.

Absolutely yes, get a new car. You are a young, single woman with a serious medical condition who could have to drive to remote places at odd hours for your job. You cannot afford to risk having your car crap out on you at an inopportune time for your own health and safety. I am a huge advocate of cutting fiscal corners wherever possible, but driving a clunker in your position is simply asking for trouble, IMO. You're an MD-PhD. I promise you that they'll give you whatever credit you need. I was able to get it as a PhD student. 😛 I suggest buying a 2006 vehicle new. The 2007s are coming out this time of year, so the dealerships will be looking to get rid of their inventories. Keep the car for 5+ years until it starts having problems, and it will more than pay for itself in terms of saving you time, money, and anxiety.

We used to have a 1994 Nissan Sentra from new. We put around 120k miles on it in about 4-5 years. Not a single problem and only needed the oil changed. I currently have a Nissan since 2003 and I've only had to do oil changes, but I only have 10.5k miles on it...

We used to have a Mercedes SL, nothing but problems. Currently a BMW 7series, and it's like what you have now. Need to put in a couple thousand every year. I'd say stay away from German cars in general (BMW, MB, Chrysler, VW, Audi...). Porsches (the '95-'98) are VERY reliable. They're air cooled, meaning no radiator for the engine, just a fan on the engine. They easily go in the 100k+ mile range with no problems.

My brother has a 2000 Civic sedan. 60k miles already had to change out the ignition system. It's a garbage car imo.

A couple of my friends have some Hyundais. One has the Santa Fe (SUV) since I think 2002 and it's given him zero issues and has 30k miles. His brother has the Elantra I think, sedan. They've had that for 2 years with no problems. He used to have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it kept messing up on it so he gave it up. I think Hyundais have 10year powertrain warranties. They're priced well, too.

Thanks for the advice folks. Ugh. It has been a solid car, but is now just starting to get old. I never had any problems with it until 2 years ago.

You are right Q - I definitely don't want it to just crap out on me at some random time. But also way feel like I can't afford a new car right now. But you are right that I should be able to get credit - I have a really good credit history.

The worst part is, I feel like I need to make this decision today or tomorrow (if I am going to put more money into this one or just put the money into a new one!)

Beary, Q had some solid advice. If you are pouring more than $1500 a year in that car, it needs to go. That's a downpayment on a new car (not including tax and tags 😛 - that disclaimer on commercials always annoys me because they speak so fast - 😳 ) or at least part of one. I'd start looking now and buy around nov or so. By then the new models will be out and you might get a good deal on a 2006 (b/c the 2008's will be getting ready to come out)

If you don't want to sink the money into it, go get the car now. Plus you'll get SOME trade in value. It won't be much but I would rather do that and then you have maybe $2K or so with the trade and then that extra $1500 for tax/tags and downpayment.

I just checked kbb.com (Kelly's blue book) and with your car in fair condition (I didn't know what model so I just picked the low one) you can get at least $1,575 and if you have a good negotiator with you even more.

Wow, I'm surprised! Thanks for the info. I didn't think I would be able to get that much. Yeah, that makes it more palatable to get able to get $1500 from it.

My folks are encouraging me to pay for the repairs now (especially the timing belt) and start saving and thinking about buying a new car. And then plan to buy relatively soon but not immediately. I may just end up doing that, because I am the type of person who likes to research something for a long time.
