A few ground rules. Everything you post must be RANDOM and more importantly, only peripherally related to the MCAT. See my example post below. I now await Beary's shirtless pic of Carl Edwards. C'mon Beary, A-man is dying to see it. 😀

This is Ana's example:

This thread is very deep tonight.

I'm a Catholic who went to Catholic school and I apparently still know nothing about my religion. 😳

I'm non-religious. Actually, my entire family is from an "Islamic Republic," but none are religious. Even when they were in that country, they weren't religious. They had to pray in public and such. Of course they would still drink alcohol (illegal in those countries) at home. So I was raised without religion...

I honestly don't know the differences between baptist, catholic, etc. I can see slight differences, but in the grand scheme of things, they all appear the same. That conflict Anastasis said she had as a kid in her neighborhood is pretty confusing to me...(ignoring the history between the two in Ireland or other places).

Hey this might be a good time to bring up a medical school interview question

What is the hardest thing you will face as a doctor? I was going to say something along the lines of questioning my faith. For example, you are a Physician working a C.H.O.P. and you receive two of the gsw's from Lancaster a few weeks ago.....little innocent girls shot in the head by a sick psychopath.....I would think that would make me question a lot of things, and it's one of the fears I have about going into this profession.

Ana... I'm sorry ok, you are right. Peter had no control over who succeeded him, the main point is to follow JC's teachings.

It doesn't matter if you broke away for political reasoning or because of hate toward Irish, Italian, Polish people... or anything like that. I'm sure whatever reason your sect had for breaking away from Catholicism was appropriate
are you being sarcastic?

Do you think a person's current religious beliefs have anything to do with the history of their church? I believe what I believe and I feel what I feel because it makes the most sense to me and it's how God speaks to me in my life. I don't really give a damn about the history of my "sect"

I think Ana was referring to when she lived in Belfast.

I'd say the hardest would be dealing with medical ethics and faith of patients. Bring up the blood thing with those witness people.

if your beliefs weren't so closely tied to your sect... why would you respond to what I'm saying in such an aggressive way ?

I completely forgot about the pictures in Belfast... and that you are Protestant. Obviously this subject is a lot more touchy for you since you're a Rangers fan, and I'm a Celtic fan... we can still come together though

And I don't really see much different between christian religions either Williams - but I admittedly don't know much about the history and the reasons for the split.

I know on a personal level, my husband had issues with Catholicism and not believing or understanding a lot of what I believe (he is Protestant). What it came down to between us is that the details don't matter - we both accept JC as our savior and that's what is most important to both of us.

How do those work with say an adrenaline rush and similar things? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to pace makers...

Very crudely unfortunately. Mine is a motion sensor, literally. So any jarring motion (thinking running, etc.) makes my heart rate speed up. Unfortunately this also happens on buses, etc. 😡

For a while they were using "minute ventilation sensors", which increased your heart rate based on an increase in respiratory rate (again, thinking running etc.) This fell out of favor because lots of pathologic processes cause increased respiratory rate (pneumonia, CHF, etc.) when you DON'T want an increased heart rate.

Supposedly coming down the pike are new leads that actually measure the contractility of the heart (which is adrenaline and such mediated) and then adjust heart rate accordingly. But this is a long ways from reality at the present time.

I agree. Bringing up the history of the church, especially one that was historically run on power and corruption, it just ridiculous.

One of my friends calls people like you "two-timers" She goes every week iirc.

heh... twice a year Catholics... I'm at mass about 20 weeks out of the year... again I have my doubts about my spirituality, but I do respect tradition

I'm not an anything fan. I don't come down on either side of that divide.

Very interesting stuff, thanks. Do you think that there will ever be one made in our lifetimes that could nearly fully simulate the heart and reponses? That would be very cool. Hopefully a lot of research is going into something like this if feasible.

well I do know a lot of very devout Catholics who know a lot about the religion who feel otherwise.

In it's defense, Catholicism has at least made some changes to adapt to modern times. But then again, they are under the most scrutiny because of all the horrible **** that has been going on in their churches.

Yeah, there is a lot of research on it. I don't know about one in our lifetime that is that sophisticated. BUT, with that said, pacemakers are only 40 years old and have come so far and are unbelievably sophisticated (despite my complaints about rate response and such). Actually, now that I think about it, I bet there will be one. I think a lot of the limitations have come with battery life and size, and that technology keeps getting better and better.

It's the tradition that I DONT respect
The tradition of the Mass I can respect. At a wedding, I was explaining to a non-Catholic friend why we do what we do, and why certain elements are in there, and he thought it was pretty cool... it's the tradition of scandal, judgmental attitudes, and hanging on to traditions that serve no modern purpose (ie, priests not marrying, no female priests) that bug the hell out of me.

I think the main thing people confuse nowadays is the reason behind the religion and the history associated with it. IMO (keeping in mind that I'm not religious), is that religion is not say like a country. A country is built on history and what happens from its inception onwards (possible til its ending). Religion is more about the beginnings and what the basic principles are, not what happened along the way. I think that along the way, the main idea split into too many "sub religions" and conflicts happened between these two. I really don't think that there's a material difference between the majority of them. Just like you said in the last line. They pretty much all accept JC.

How does the battery operate? I think you mentioned earlier that you have a wire you can connect to? I hope I get to see some new pm made. I like technology a lot (guess why I like radiology). 👍

Priests fondling children REALLY bugs the hell out of me. I guess UMP's justice system of murdering ex-cons will take care of it behind closed bars out of the public's eye solves it. Another one bites the dust.

Yes, I agree 100%. I admit that I am very two faced when it comes to my religion. I like certain aspects of it a lot, especially the marriage aspect. But like you said, there are so many outrageously outdated traditions that just piss people off.
