A few ground rules. Everything you post must be RANDOM and more importantly, only peripherally related to the MCAT. See my example post below. I now await Beary's shirtless pic of Carl Edwards. C'mon Beary, A-man is dying to see it. 😀

This is Ana's example:

Priests fondling children REALLY bugs the hell out of me. I guess UMP's justice system of murdering ex-cons will take care of it behind closed bars out of the public's eye solves it. Another one bites the dust.
And an entire religious organization sanctioning the cover-up and hush-hush attitude of individual mens' actions chafes me. Enough that after Christmas dinner last year, when my very "Catholic", conservative Republican extended family members decided to talk about the current scandals and how these adults just "made up" allegations 15, 20 years later, they got to hear a 20 minute speech from me on the psychological impact of molestation by a supposed pillar of the community, the shame and depression that goes along with it, and the continued psychological damage that's inflicted when an apology is not given and the victim is not allowed to work through the healing process.

Man I'm looking forward to the holidays this year.

it's unfortunate that believing Catholics who have thoughts of pedophilia or homosexuality just get ushered in to the priesthood. The only way out of this is letting priests marry....

How does the battery operate? I think you mentioned earlier that you have a wire you can connect to? I hope I get to see some new pm made. I like technology a lot (guess why I like radiology). 👍

Yeah, the technology is really cool. I would have loved to do electrophysiology (cardiologists specializing in arrhythmias and devices) if I were at all interested in clinical medicine.

The power is all battery operated - there is no external "plug in" or anything. Anything external greatly increases risk of infection. I don't know too much about the battery - it's some type of lithium ion powered thing. It's totally enclosed in the device, so when folks get their "batteries changed", they're getting a whole new generator.

When I mentioned the wire, I was talking about the wires that connect the pacemaker to your heart. Here is an image:

(called a lead in this pic)

I also have a wire in my RA and an epicardial LV wire which no longer works for unclear reasons. The wires/leads can be disconnected from the generator (same connection as your headphones and your walkman). So if your wires are still ok, you can get a new generator as a pretty superficial surgery - just a small incision, take out the old generator, snap a new one in, close up. It's really neat.

I'm so glad to hear there are no external wires. I just kept having thoughts of it and it made me cringe if something happened to it. How long can those batteries last? You mention it's the Lithium so I doesn't sound like it has a kenetic part attached to it...

They last a pretty long time. I think 5-6 years is pretty much the minimum anymore. I'm 100% dependent on mine and that's how long mine lasted.

There are some folks that use them less, for example if their heart rate only drops occasionally and they use a pacemaker for backup. Their batteries can last around 10 years.

It's really pretty amazing when I step back and think about it. I tend to just bitch about it without thinking about the amazing technology.

Neither of you can appreciate the beauty of a hispanic woman? 😕 👎

i like hispanic women... but I don't like the pale white to black hair contrast. Black hair/tanned skin/fun in bed 👍 from me

Wow...that would be terrifying for me. So you have to have surgery every 5-6 years or so for the battery? You are an awesome person for being able to go through all that and still do what you do as a doctor. 👍

I'm 'bout to head to bed. Beary, I forgot to tell you that Montoya raced at Iowa this past Sunday. He was 3rd in quali and led the race after the 4th lap and through the 17th or so. His spotter told him "outside outside" meaning the 2nd place guy was going to his outside. Montoya thought he meant for himself to go on the outside line. They hit eachother and Montoya went to the pits, game over. Cya guys later!

P.S. UMP, I agree with what you say, but I don't have anything against that type of contrast. I think it looks good sometimes like in that nun case.

i can't take this anymore... WHERE IS ANA!!! 🙁

being half jewish/half catholic gives me a lot to talk about 😀

Yeah, that's right. Honestly, the whole pacemaker dependent thing has never bothered me that much (though it bothers some folks, such as my mom. 😍 ) I got my first one when I was 20 and the only time it has "failed" was when I started a new anti-arrhythmic medication and my heart's threshold changed (so my pacemaker was still firing, just my heart wasn't capturing). Even that wasn't a pacemaker problem per se. But thanks a lot for your kind words. 🙂

Well, I have got my wireless router up and now my internet on my desktop is working again (though it seems kind of slow?) I hate all that crawling around on the floor.

Now the real test - see if the laptop has a connection. :scared:

Good morning Randomites!!!

😱 I'm a little bit glad I decided to study last night. 😱

you didn't want to be involved in a discussion that made everyone turn against everyone else ?

Not to get back to the catholic vs. non catholic christians, but my very good mexican friend said she was Catholic and her family is still catholic, but she converted to non denominational because she felt the catholics don't really study the bible as in depth or really follow the teachings of the bible as closely.

I think many protestants must have felt the same way in history.

In my opinion, history is often dictated by the social circumstances of where most religions occur. I bet if a study was done on this it would bring in much fruitful evidence of this fact.

For instance, islamic people wearing burkas can be used as an example. Sure it is stated that it is done for modesty, but if you think about where most muslims came about in the origin of their foundation, you'd find most are in the mid east, northeast africa, and afghanistan area where there are many deserts and sand storms. Such gear in these environments probably also served as a way of protection from such storms.

Or what about why Hindu's don't eat meat??? Sure they have stories about why they don't do it, but historically speaking India was a country with a variety of vegetation that couldn't even be found in American farms so they probably came to make that the main staple of their diets. On the other hand, the countries in the northern parts of the world didn't have the right climates and so had to rely on things like meat.

Last but not least when masses stop believing in relgion because it doesn't prove the faith they need to get throuh something, they often convert to other religions and the old ways become obsolete. Part of the destruction of many polytheistic religions was that the old beliefs were not serving as proof to people that a possible higher up could be. Instead it was almost becoming more comical in the view of the ancients as with greek religion now relegated to mythology.

One final note on religion:

I recommend you all to read Joeseph Campbell's: A hero with a 1000 faces. But essentially, no matter what religion you look at, when you erase all the superficial traditions, the names they call their gods, etc. and come down to the main principle teachings you'll find that all the moral beliefs are essentially the same or similar in most religions. Essentially for every christian story in teh bible you can find similar stories in other religions.

For instance, Novas Ark is analogous to the story of Krishna holding a mountain top with his finger to save a select few during time of sinning.

In all, I don't think its fair to judge one on their religious beliefs because while we may call god by different names our essential beliefs about morals and ethics that god has served to guide us in are the same.

"You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it" (Matt. 16:18).

and I don't remember reading that JC used Martin Luther for anything 😕

I agree. Also, the number of priests that have molested children is far outshadowed by the number of priests who have not. We just hear about the bad ones because it's news.

Catholicism is one of the hardest Christian denominations to follow IMO. There are many rules outside the Bible, but the rules are based on scripture and biblical teachings (reconciliation, communion, confirmation, mass, etc.). I admit that I have not been diligent about going to mass, but I respect the religion immensely.

I could go on and on, but as I'm typing, I just noticed that my body is itching - I have hives everywhere! WTF???? At first I thought maybe on of the cats had fleas that bit me, but these are quarter-sized or bigger and smooth. Hmmm.....

Also, the incidence of priest pederasty is much lower than in the general population...

they are human too... right ? 🙄

 UMP, priests should not be raping little boys. I don't know how you can even begin to use the "they are human" argument with that. Priests are people that, while having the same flaws as any human being, SHOULD be held to higher standards. I mean, these are people preaching about our "sins" right? It's simply a flaw in the church, that's all i'm saying.

We had one of those bastards at my church. He actually had the nerve to preach/condemn homosexuality; it was like his little mini crusade within our chruch. He is now in Jail for child molestation charges. What a joke. Maybe thats why i'm so jaded to the whole religion thing. They all have flaws and no one is better or "right" in my opinion.

I think that priests should have the right to rape little boys, because that's what the church promises them from the very beginning. I mean where else should we put all of our homosexuals ? 😕

🙄
