We had one that was the same age as I was. 😱 That was a little freaky for me. But wow, that person's organs were absolutely beautiful, perfect, like out of a book.

i heard of a story where someone in med school was about to dissect cadavers with their class, and it just so happened that they had to dissect their aunt that had died about 3 months earlier. kind of freaky.😱

Wish I would've brought my CHem with me today.. there's just a limited number of books I can carry a day.. lol..:laugh:

Yeah, I know the peds card surgery fellow. 🙁

It has really affected me (and everybody else at U Mich). They are saying now that nobody could have survived the crash because it was very high speed impact and are sending out condolences to the families, etc.

And I hope they are able to find another heart for the intended recipient. 🙁

Just really really sad all the way around.

Morning.....👎 So tired!

I opened my windows last night since it has become too hot, and my cats got into a screaming match with the neighbors' one-eyed old pirate. I thought he'd go away, but judging by the shrieking and the sight of cats blown up to the size of a nice saintbernard, he tried to attack them through the window screen.:laugh: I had to close the kitchen window in order to stop the stupidity.

Mine too. I had to cut it down from 6400 characters. And then I had to cut it down more to 4300 characters for AACOMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We should get props for creativity in doing that 🙂


BTW - Hi MUSHY!!!!!!!!!! Are you moved yet and are you going to OPM?

Could be better, thanks for asking. 3 more years to go of residency. I am alternating between acceptance of throwing away this time of my life or fighting to have a fulfilling life outside of work. 4 years is a LOOONG time.

25 days until I'm a senior resident though!

*cough* BS *cough*

Seriously, I promise you this story is an urban legend. You don't get a cadaver a few months after the person died. It takes a long time for the body to be processed and make its way to the med school. And then it might not even be used right away. The cadavers we had probably died a few years ago.

Mackinac will be fun! The boats from Chicago will be coming in July.

I know you are not thrilled with your residency - one of those necessary evils I guess. At least it's not a 5-year residency!

eggplant, zucchini, green pepper, tomatoes browned in olive oil and put into crockpot. salt/pepper to taste

2 cloves garlic chopped and browned in olive oil and put into veggie mix. Mix all up and cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 in crockpot. (can also use onions/scallions in place of garlic).

Can serve on own, with rice or couscous.

Urgh, I'm not thrilled....called my father yesterday to ask where the wire was, because he sent it Thursday and it usually comes the same day. Turned out his stupid bank messed up and didn't send one...so he resent it today. Hopefully it'll be here today - I'm running low on food and payday's not till Friday. And when I checked on Thursday, there were only 4 tickets home left that worked well for me - only one connection and a reasonable layover time. All other flights have either 2 connections or are 10 hours apart.

Let's review some orgo for now...

Holy ****, this problem SUCKS!!!!


Anyone wanna take a stab at it?

A compound has a molecular ion peak in its mass spectrum of 149 amu. The IR spectrum shows several C-H, C-C, and C-N vibrations, and a weak band close to 3350 cm-1. The H1 NMR spectrum shows the following:

d 0.8 - broad singlet, 1 H
d 1.00 - doublet (3H)
d 2.35 - singlet (3H)
d 2.65 - complex/overlapped pattern (3H)
d 7.15 - pattern with one dominant peak (5H)

The signal at d 0.8 and the infrared band at 3350 cm-1 both disappear when the compound is dissolved in D2O.

OK, so we know we have an amine from the IR peak data...The NMR data suggests that there's a benzene ring (the 7.15 pattern at 5 H). Then we have a CH3 which is attached to an atom with no hydrogens on it (3 H singlet), and a CH3 attached to an atom with one hydrogen on it (3 H, doublet).

The D2O info, I guess, means that the amine is somehow affected during the process....but how? I don't think D2O coud substitute for it, it's not a good leaving group.

Now, what do I do about the d 0.8 broad singlet and the d 2.65 complex pattern? I presume the singlet is one hydrogen bonded to the nitrogen in the amine? So I guess we have a secondary amine, NR2H.

I hate NMR. We had a packet of 30 we could interpret for 10 extra credit points. We were given an IR trace and proton NMR with molecular weights and had to determine the compound. It was tough because some you had to guess on the presence of a halogen or not.

But I got my bonus points!!!!!!

Gah, I caved in and looked at the answer....I would've never figured this **** out on my own! What threw me off is those 3 hydrogens circled in red - apparently that's the "complex pattern at d 2.65." I suspected that benzylic hydrogens were involved given the chemical shift, but I would have NEVER guessed that this was the exact set-up for those 3 protons.

I think I'm going to eat light on Thursday and pig out on sushi and the izagaya menu.

I already know I want my favorites:

unagi
uni
ikura
ika
tako

and off the cooked menu:

grilled octopus and oyster
steamed clam

I absolutely love eating the "chewy" seafood - squid, octopus, scallops, eel, sea urchin, etc.

👍 Approve everything except unagi - not a fan.


If I eat eel, I just take the entire smoked fish and eat the meat on its own.
