Let's get this party started.

Our lovely Randames.

much harder to study at home, when there's so many other things to be doing (like MCAT studying)
I feel you, except for me SDN is the major distractor.

I'm gonna make some lunch now and then head to the library afterwards for some quality physics studying.👍

I'm also O+, but I can't donate blood because I have this annoying habit of passing out when I become hypovolemic. (Evidently, losing a pint is enough to do it.)

And....this is my 10,000th post! :hardy: 😀
That's it, you're banned...

I can't donate blood because I'm "high risk for HIV."🙄 👎

Really? I'm surprised. Are the risk factors defined differently in Canada vs. the US?
I actually tried to donate in the US. The "high-risk behaviour" involved dating someone from an African country with a high incidence of HIV. That's what I get for being worldly.🙄

But my HS roommate who was from China was rejected because of a one-week vacation in one of the Chinese provinces that had a higher than average incidence of HIV as well.🙄

No, that all makes sense. In this country, high risk groups are men who have sex with men, IV drug users of both sexes, immigrants from high-incidence places like most of the sub-Saharan African nations and Haiti, people who have sex with any of the previous groups, and babies born to infected mothers. Also, if you travel to rural areas in tropical third world countries, they'll still refuse you for a couple of years just to make sure you don't have malaria and other blood-borne parasites. I stayed on a farm in Costa Rica for a few weeks, and they restricted me for two years also.

Don't they test blood for HIV and things like that after it's donated anyway?

Yes. But the idea is to avoid having people who are at high risk donate at all. The problem is, the test specificity isn't 100%. In other words, you can get some false negatives, especially if the person has just been infected and hasn't seroconverted (made detectable levels of HIV antibodies) yet.

BLAH! I was finally able to log on and neither the lab nor the final grade is up!👎 That's day 8 since I wrote the final and last time it was 10 days...blaaaah. I wanna get my grade so I can submit!

I've already sent the transcript request and told them to send it courier, so that it gets there fast. I wanna get verified before I fly to Russia.:meanie:

Don't put any crack in that package... 😉

I can't donate either. Same deal, and don't weigh enough. I had blood transfusions way back when, which sometimes doens't make the donating people happy either.. at least I can't say I haven't tried.

I am an organ donor though..

And Congrats on that 10,000!

You know what really bothers me? That we don't have a single "nerd" smiley on SDN!👎

i'm not surprised we have the same blood type, hello im your bratty little brother right?

don't you get a song or something? The DJs are losing their touch!

I can't donate either. Stupid cancer.

All the cool Randomites are O+. 😎

No way! A+ is the best! 😛

How do all of you know your blood types? My mom found out somehow when I was little and then I had a blood type done when I was pregnant.

DH knows because he has donated (he's O+).

I have no idea whether my girls are A or O, + or -

Is anyone here good at physics? Care to answer a magnetism question I posted in the physics thread in Study Q & A? I have the answer, but can't figure out how they got to it.👎

if you ever donate, there's a number you can call and find out. in freshman bio lab in college there was also a day where we could type our own blood and look at it under the microcope, its super quick.

oh man--i really want to know! but i don't want to prick myself.....eep!
