If I was in their positions, what could you do? These eople are dying and you have no way to help them so naturally the first thought is to make them comofrtable. But some apparently crossed the line ...although if they had been evacuated they wouldn't have happened.

I'll admit you! I have multiple patients on the floor right now for this exact problem. You could ask for disability every time I come into the room too.

hey guys! i survived. there was some roof damage to my house and half my fence and a bunch of trees were torn up but i'm alive. it literally looks like someone dumped a forest onto my neighborhood, its crazy. just about every tree in sight is down and both wooden and concrete power poles are snapped in half.

98% of dade and broward counties lost power right after the storm, about 2/3's of miami-dade county where I live STILL doesnt have power. including me, i lost power at 730AM on Monday - Florida Power and Light said it may take until NOVEMBER 22ND for power to be fully restored to my area so i'm actually posting from the medical school right now. the med school is closed for classes this week but its open for us to use the internet and charge our cell phones and escape into some air conditioning for a few hours.

miami-dade county is actually under a curfew right now between 8pm-6am, anyone out after 8 gets arrested if you're out without a good reason. i've been eating tuna fish and crackers for the last week! i actually had hot food today for the first time, i found a wendy's a few miles away that had its power back. sucks though because everything closes at 7 so that people can get home before the curfew. the gas lines are insane, people are in these lines that stretch for blocks and blocks and are running out of gas and pushing their cars into the gas stations. its one thing to see it all on tv but its totally different to see the lines stretching down your own street and neighborhood.

this thing hit us hard, i'm glad i prepped for it but nobody thought it would hit us as a cat 3. i've had this little battery powered tv i've been using for days to keep up with the news. ok, thats everything i guess. my posting will be on and off for a while because i can only log on from here but i'm ok and for the most part my house is ok too so i'm happy, even though the thought of not having power for another month totally sucks.

i have talked to princess cyanide and she is alive and well poisoning whats left of the miami water supply. :scared:

glad you are ok A!

Yeah, from the looks of it alot of others didn't really prepare for it as well. Which was stupid b/c they had a week to prepare. Now they are complaining that they aren't getting supplies fast enough. Funny ...

i can understand the diabetics who need the ice to keep their insulin cold for example because not everyone in that situation could afford the $$$ to buy a generator and after your power goes out you only have about 24-36 hours of ice left. everyone else needs to step up though and take some personal responsibility. for example, why are people lining up for bottled water in miami dade if we arent under a boil water order and nearly everyone has running water at home? that water should go to broward where nearly the whole county was under a boil water order for days. its just dumb.

i live down here mush and i can tell you most people blew it off. when i got my supplies before the storm, just about no one was at the supermarket buying supplies or filling up their car with gas. now the lines are miles long at the few gas stations that have power.

the keys especially blew it off, look at all the time and money our government puts into the national hurricane center and only 10% of keys residents evacuated. 😕 i heard on the local news that the majority of cars in the keys were damaged by the flooding, something that was sooooooooooooo preventable.

exactly. I saw the reports from Miami and figured you wouldn't have powr but I was amazed at the lines for a bag of ice and 3 bottles of water. Like they couldn't have purchased it or had their own water ready?

Its irresponsible people that really make situations like this the pits and then try to milk it for all they can (free handouts). 😡 Im sure some of those people might have valid excuses but the majority of them really don't. Kinda pisses me off b/c I know when I know a storm is coming I always prepared whether its snow, ice, or hurricane. 👎

Some people down there took the time to make sure their families were prepared and they had crackers and tuna to live on 😉

thanks jtank!

The derm and rheumatology finals I had this week were made take homes by the school admins! i picked them up today when i was there. 😀

As for next week, they are going to jam all of this weeks lectures into next weeks schedule. I think the plan is to bring us in an hour early at 8AM and to keep us a couple of hours later to about 5PM, we should know soon.

Our first midterm in the new module is November 7th though and thats not getting moved for anything. So we'll have to learn 2 weeks of med school material in 1 weekend. bring on the coffee.

*edit*

sorry jtank, i forgot about your question about damage to the med school. the medical center is off generators now and back to regular power, they had been on generators until Wednesday i think. as for damage - i only saw toppled trees and power poles. the same type of stuff thats all over the county but i didnt see anything too severe. the metrorail (commuter train) was damaged, its like our version of the L in chicago that you see on "ER". we have a stop at our med center and that wasnt fixed until last night but its up and running now. looks like it should all be ready to go for monday.

Heh, speak for yourself. 😛

In all seriousness, as bad as things were, I'm just glad they weren't worse. My folks still have no power (thanks for nothing, FPL 😡 ), but at least it gave them an excuse to clean out their fridge.

They're amazingly resourceful, I must say. My mom told me that they made pasta using their barbeque. 😱 I didn't ask for details, but I assume they used the BBQ to boil the water.... :meanie:

you call that resourceful? hell, as the parents of a genius I would expect them to rig up a generator with nothing more than a rubber band and some paper clips. 😉

Minnesota is definitely the place to be. What is winter without snow and frostbite?
