Oh M-kitty, Oh M-kitty,
How steadfast are your passages!
Your stand alones are brutal, in summer's clime
And through the joy of spring-break-time.
Oh M-kitty, Oh M-kitty,
How maddning are your passages!

Oh M-kitty, Oh M-kitty,
What sadness befalls me
When oft at evil MCAT-time
Your form inspires my song and rhyme.
Oh M-kitty, Oh M-kitty,
What sadness befalls me.

woman, you are a poet

Dashing through the MCAT
On a one-pencil mechanical way,
Over the Writing sample we go,
Laughing all the way;
bwuaha ha ha
Bells on timers ring,
Making proctors fight,
What evil it is to take and sing
A MCAT song tonight.
Oh jingly bells MCAT smells
AMCAS laid a egg
and the AAMC broke its wheel
and the squat n squeeze got away
hay!

if they ask you how long you plan on working will you tell them the truth? "Just 2 weeks until med school then you'll never see me again suckers." 😛

blah, I'm at school trying to read a packet on respiratory physiology. I think I'm going to get some coffee because this stuff is really putting me to sleep. I'll try not to think of diesel's "roach bits" description of the coffee at my school.

ROachy Coffee:

Brew one part abdomen with two parts thorax
be sure to seep exoskeleton throughly
lightly sprinkle with roach wings for a silky skin layer on top - cover with creame and serve.

Question for you medical types: why does eating a spoonful of sugar cure hiccoughs? Don't know why it works, but it does, every time. 👍

Wow, this is the first I've heard of this. Usually, I figure water is there to do the trick. That's what I use when I want to cure the hiccups.

But that's a good question...........Arsenic, why don't you venture to answer this one??

Perhaps because you drool alot and clear whatever is stuck?

I have met people for which sugar didn't work.

I figured it must relax the diaphragm or something. The drinking water idea that Guju suggested will work for me sometimes, as will holding my breath. But if the hiccoughs are bad enough, those two things won't always work. Someone suggested trying sugar to me once, and I figured, what the heck, I like sugar, so....and lo and behold, it actually worked. It always works, but only if I eat the full spoonful. No cheating with half a spoonful; I have to eat the whole thing, all at once, and then it works. It's kind of dry to eat and weird to watch, but it tastes great. :meanie:

Arsenic, where are you??? You're practically a doctor by now; answer my question! :meanie: BTW, I finally finished my Miami secondary. I'm submitting it tomorrow. 😀

i love the fact that all of you ignored diesels last post to me, bunch of freaks

Ok Q, I'm only 1 day into respiratory physiology but what i do know is that hiccups are caused when you diaphragm spasms.... i have no idea why sugar would cure that, maybe its psychosomatic or maybe there really is some physiological mechanism behind it. i'll be on the lookout for it during the next month of this course 😀

yes, i am 1/4th doc, technically capable of answering questions relating to neuroscience, cardiology, epidemiology, micro, immuno, biochem, blah blah blah.... add the respiratory system to that list in mid august 😎

Please ask your instructor. You can tell him that a friend wants to know. 😛

i'll email him 😉

Here is one explanation I found on the web:

Swallow a teaspoon of coarse sugar without any water. The roughness of the sugar will disturb the muscular spasm in the throat and stop the hiccup. This works for me every time. Perhaps swallowing anything coarse would do the trick, but sugar will melt away, leaving no solids in the throat.

I can't say that it makes sense. Another person suggests trying peanut butter. Yummy. I wonder if sugar mixed with peanut butter would work too??? What about Reese's peanut butter cups? 😀

Woohoo, proof!!! Suh-weet! (like sugar!)

Clinical trials have endorsed the use of granulated sugar as treatment for hiccups, although the mechanism of action remains a mystery.11

i cant believe you ran a lit search

1972 though? you could do better than that :meanie:

oh, forgot to tell you guys, great advice from one of my teachers today about what to do if you get stabbed in the chest during a bar fight  :

if you have a pneumothorax, its going to be hard for you to breathe in and your lung will be collapsed so....... what you need to do is breathe out as much as you can (maximum expiration), then plug the hole and breathe normally while you call 911.

now thats MY kind of teacher 👍 👍 👍

hey i will be a assss-set to the medical community
but enough fun and games i am really stressed today
i have considered emailing mr. Hink.. you know who
so calm down alex before you drive to contacting him about my anxieties

Sugar works because you change your inspiration-expiration pattern to accomadate the sucking down of the sweet thing.

ok so this may not make sense but thats why when i hiccup i just take a few deep breaths or chug water. no room to spasm if its going to kill you (or land some 100 liters of cold water in your lungs)

correct me alex. now. before i publish this reason is russia.

i find it very sickning that the assailant doesnt even offer to dial 911 for you. AFTER you plug yourself you haveto do it! what if your fingers are too sticky or your phone is a jazzy lcd touchpad kind?

ok, fine, I will try to be serious with you in one of my posts:

You are going to be fine, dont psych yourself out! There are going to be 182 people at orientation who are going to have nervous smiles on their faces and all will be filled with anxiety about the first month of medical school. Its the same way every year, trust me - you can get through it. 🙂

so by that reasoning, powdered sugar should work too..... whatever, its as good a theory as any. Now call me when you get money from the NIH to conduct the research 😀
