I still have a couple years before I get done with residency and get a real job, but a girl can dream😀

I have a random question about VA jobs. A couple people have told me that no matter what city you're in, the VA is always hiring psychiatrists, and I've seen a bunch of articles about the shortage of VA psychiatrists especially in places like Montana. But when I go to the USA jobs website, there don't actually seem to be that many open positions listed in those areas. For instance, there is only one open position listed for Montana, and only two positions listed for Idaho. Is the VA not hiring for their outpatient clinics in smaller cities in Idaho or Montana or are some of the jobs just not publicly listed?

There are definitely areas where the VA is not hiring. Around here (and I would imagine elsewhere in the Northeast) a VA job comes up from time to time but they are for the most part pretty well-staffed...

The VA is so disorganized and inefficient they don't even know how to advertise for jobs they need. Fill out their lengthy application and be prepared to communicate with someone from HR who can't think about anything but going home. Get the inside connection from an attending if you want in.

VA was my first choice since I love PTSD and the juicy benefits, but there have been no openings in CA. I'm told to just keep applying every few months and hope someone retires or transfers. Not very encouraging.....
