My transitional year has a lot of light months and since I certainly have no interest in reading about topics in internal medicine, I was thinking about doing a little bit of derm reading in advance of starting residency in July. I was planning on buying Andrews, but I saw that the last edition was released in 2005. Does anyone know if they're coming out with a newer edition any time soon? I don't want to waste money on a book that's going to be out of date within a year. Thanks.

I'm not a current resident (deep breaths, 7 more months) but in speaking with some current residents at my program, they've been great in offering to lend me library copies or share their passwords to access digital versions. That might tide you over nicely and give you a chance to see if a newer version is on the way.

I posted it elsewhere, but I think that reading Habif's textbook (not atlas) is a much better use of your time for practical dermatology issues that u will need to manage when u start residency. Andrews is too dense IMO. Re-read Dermatology Secrets (if u didn't already do so in med school). Then, if you really want to be hardcore, get Bolognia and read whatever interests u. It is much better written, more up-to-date (especially if u get the online supplement) and far more comprehensive than Andrews, which is essentially a board review book.

Lastly, get a Board Review book, like Ali (My favorite, especially for 1st yr. Great pictures. A new edition is coming out this spring) or Susan Bayliss's "Handbook of Dermatology" (No pictures, very detailed. More of a 2nd-3rd year review book). Annotate the review book with anything cool you read in Bolognia. Use the review book as a rough guide as to what is important (like 1st Aid for USMLE Step 1).
