As a pod student, would it be useful at all to have a blackberry? Sort of a random question...but I've been debating on keeping the blackberry I just got because it seems more functional(emails, internet..plus the gps will be helpful when I move to a whole new area-Chicago).....or exchanging it for the fun but less useful iphone. Do any of you students out there use a smartphone or find it useful? If not, I'm going for the fun gadget phone instead....

👍

I don't know much about electronics, but I do know that you can download the iphone program into your phone(if it's a touch screen)...I would go with the more practical one, JMHO.

I have a palm Treo and I do use it for school daily. I loaded our entire class schedule, which is particularly useful it Scholl because classes are at random different times on different days and its easy to keep up with meetings. I use the mail client with my gmail and the google maps free download is awesome to find your way around (real time traffic too!!)

I'm not sure about google maps for blackberry, but I would imagine they have something similar. It might depend on your carrier....

Whatever you do, avoid Verizon if coming to Scholl! Verizon service is awesome everywhere except North Chicago, where I've had dropped calls walking across the parking lot!!

Yea maybe I will keep the blackberry.....it has an awesome google maps with live traffic times....plus like you said it will be great for the class schedule, etc. I just wish the interface was more up to date....and it had a touch screen.....I have att/cingular...how is the service in N.Chicago?

iPHONE!!!!! 😉 blackberries are not reliable especially with service outages that are happening (reported by the NY Times last week). iPhone has a lot more available to it, especially since it's wifi (much faster than ANY 3G piece of crap!) iPhone has cellular locator which locates you based on cell-phone towers, GPS is good for your car, but do you really want 1 hr battery life on your phone with GPS? My iPhone lasts 4 days on one charge. The biggest problem is i don't go running or workouts with it even though it has music on there. I still prefer my shuffle for workouts.

As a student, most ppl got the palm treo's. It really doesn't matter cause you'll probably get a new phone every 2-3 years. I'm sure those guys who got the treo's are kinda pissed now that palm is going out of business... i don't think Apple is anytime soon. good luck.

btw, SDN works on the iPhone. swipe your finger and poof, after each Medicine note, i can goof off and everyone thinks i'm looking up drugs or something (😉 love it)

Are you receiving kick backs from Steve Jobs?

CRAPOLA! Just switched to Verizon. +pissed+

ok so I exchanged my blackberry for the iPhone. so far I LOVE it and can see it being useful for school (I have to justify spending 400 bucks!!). Haha.

Caviat is that they're coming out with a 3G capable model..which means....GPS enabled most likely....sometime this year......hmmm.

all good, GPS is overrated, it's a battery hog and you currently will have 4 days of use, with GPS it's like 2-3 hrs... yeah... Google Cell Locator is pretty cool and they will be coming out with Exchange/Outlook service later this spring so you can access school email.

Dr. Marc Abel is a big Mac head at the school as well as Dr. Armstrong (I converted him btw). If you have questions about the iphone or Macbook while at school, just send them an email, cause the community for Macs is great, but IT is a bunch of idiots. Serious. I was the Mac IT guy for the school. You can ask Abel, Armstrong, Albright (lots of "A"s here... hmmm) or Clif Turner (AV guy, you'll see).

hope that helps.

stafocker,

isn't the iphone already capable of receiving mail from outlook so long as you set up the pop/imap settings?

Also if 3G is coming out for iphone....do you think it will it only be limited to new models...or will a software upgrade be able to support the function?

Another random question....did you use your iphone as your school planner or did you use a written planner? I think it kind of sucks that you don't have a week or year view with the calendar on the phone 😕

yeah, it is. But you need to get the info from your provider (the school/IT) for it to all work out. They are A-holes... but i know a couple of friends, still at SCPM with iphones, (3rd year, 4th years, and Armstrong) that use it with teh pop/imap setting.

Limited to new models, it's a hardward thing. software upgrade will only help if they boost the current network or enable more areas with wifi (that would be AWESOME and better than 3G (overrated crap) )like starbucks/BN/ and other places.

I used a written planner. Wow, my advice, make a schedule and try to keep to it. Whatever it is, just be discplined to your schedule. I don't know how you are with time-management, but i wasn't the best motivated. I needed a calendar on the wall, a scshedule planner with me in my bag, an email reminder, and helpful friends that really kept me on track. It was a multi-modal event, haha. anways, i recommend using everything in your resources

Calendar view on the iPhone, well it does have "list" view, where all the stuff is listed from "today" on. I usually use the month view and if something is on "today" i tap, "day" view. It's different and again, i'm still using a multi-schedule approach, just because i'm really overloaded (but LOVING it). honestly, you might want to find a "nerd" in your area to show you more capabilities cause i think i've lost my "nerd-hood" coming to pittsburgh.

I thought most the medically related software (dictionaries and such) run only on the palm OS platform? That is why I was favoring the treo vs blackberry and iphone.

I have a Blackberry. It is the best thing ever. I have it with Sprint so it even includes GPS navigation and what not. They offer medical software, but it is somewhat expensive in the 200$+ range. Its nice to have email pushed directly to your phone and having a full keyboard on the phone as well.

Do you have the software? What is it called? Do other people have medical-type software on their hand held devices and what is their opinion of it?

new iPhone software out 🙂

do you mean the 2.0 which comes out in June? I was watching the presentation and there was a bit about a company called Epocrates that developed a medical software for the iphone....the doctor can search rx drug indications, dosage, etc etc even by pill shape....it gives images of the drug as well...pretty neat! I think its 50 minutes into the video if anyone is interested (on the apple website). The iphone will be able to push calendar and push email as well which is great for people on exchange servers.

stafocker- is the exchange server coming out for sure for scholl students?

dude, nothing's for sure.... I know Dr. Abel and Armstrong are really pushing for it and by the time you start, maybe they'll have it in place.

Epocrates already works for the iPhone (sorta), it's the website version, kinda like facebook for the iPhone. yeah that new software coming out looks awesome, especially Spore! ha, think about all the time you can waste playing games and goofing off with your iPhone instead of studying (j/k)
