Hi all,

I have a few questions I want to verify with anyone that knows any answers...all is appreciated.

1) Is it true that Calculus and Statistics courses are not considered in the DO science GPA? If so, do the DO adcoms put a lot of stress on grades for Calc. and Stat.?

2) I took Intro. to Beginner French abroad and my transcript shows it gave me credit for second semester French...I don't understand whether this technically means that I took French 1, French 2, or both. I really need to figure this out in terms of cumulative GPA.

3) Are there any DO schools that honor humanities classes in the science GPA. I am just wondering bc I know more schools and optometry schools are considering the social sciences/humanities with grater emphasis.

THANKS

Calculus and Statistics are not considered science by AACOMAS so yes it's true that they won't be considered in your sGPA. They are also not really emphasized by adcom's, if you did well they'll like that (they always like to see you doing well in anything and everything), but if you sort of just got by, it will likely be blended in with the rest of your non-science GPA. Calculus has little application to medicine (about the only thing I can think of is that it can be valuable to approach non-mathematical problems with calculus-esque efficiency) and Statistics are important, but not critical unless you plan on going into research.

I'm sure you only got credit for one class, but hey I could be wrong. I took Portuguese 2020 and 3010 for kicks (lived in Portugal for a summer and learned the language well) when I was in Community College, I never took the intro courses cause the professor didn't think I needed to. I also wasn't awarded any CLEP credit or anything for being able to skip the intro classes.

As far as I know, there are no schools that honor humanities in the sGPA, because frankly, they aren't sciences. I've heard that in the near future all medical schools will begin shifting emphasis away from physics and other "less applicable" sciences and toward social sciences though, so if you wait a while your social sciences and humanities classes (which I'm assuming you did very well in) might mean more than they do right now.

All just my opinion/experience with the application process, to be taken accordingly.

Thanks for the help I really appreciate and value it. I have one more question that I would appreciate clearance on:

If I am a biology major, would any class with a BIO prefix be considered in the DO science gap? I know MD is a little more stingy about what BIO will be considered, but for DO isn't it as long as it has a BIO prefix it will count?

Will the same go for PHY prefixes... i.e. if you took intro to astronomy and it was PHY 213????

Thanks again!

I'm fairly confident that you are correct, but I don't remember exactly. There might be an exception made for courses below a 900 level. Don't quote me on it, but it's something that I think I remember.

As a general rule, yes. If it is BIO or PHY you should get sGPA credit. You can read the information on GPA calculation on AACOMAS on their site which tells you specifics on sGPA.

When you enter your transcript YOU flag science classes, they then just confirm your selection and will change to non-science if they disagree.

Thanks for the help guys...this is another circumstance that just came up.

Basically I just transferred over credit from Anatomy and Physiology I from a different institution to my school and they only recognized it as "undergraduate transfer credit" - in the event I wanted it to count as a 300 - level bio course at my school I would have to talk to the bio chair to see if it could get approved.

My question is is it even worth it to try to get it counted as a bio 300 course? I know med schools want you to send all transcripts anyways, but I sent it to get more credits. What do you think do you think its important to get that counted for bio credit?
