Random Stuffs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You totally got me in trouble with this video... no kidding while watching the beginning my wife came by and asked me if "I wanted to date this girl?"... Um. No. I am just on the pre-vet forum on sdn. Really.

My bf is a commercial airline pilot and they have a similar forum that they call "The Crackpipe"...
Anyways, he's gotten in "almost trouble" with me quite a few times because of that thing. Imagine some of the avatars in a forum of a predominately male industry. I've walked by countless times and thought he was looking at porn. :nono:

Here's some random stuff.

I just bought my dogs that idiotic dog ice cream you can get in the supermarket.

I assumed they'd eat it slowly, licking it in a civilized manner. Instead, both of them shotgunned a fist-sized lump of ice and gave themselves brain freeze.

Brain freeze in a dog looks like spastic drunkenness. Both of them were bulldozing their faces along the carpet, doing combat rolls and barking at god.

Can you please write a book?

Can you please write a picture book, or provide the illustrations for dsmoody's book?

Very random.

Received this from my boyfriend after I asked him how my dog is doing. (He is house/pet-sitting while my parents are on vacation.)

Just watched Minnerbelle's original and then the "remix"...now my stomach hurts from laughing so hard!!!

......sorry, I'm getting emotional...I'm thinking about cats again. I promised myself I wouldn't cry!!!
Can't believe I missed the remix.... that was great.

I am getting really tired of judgmental people who criticize how much is spent on pets. Why should anyone put a price limit on what they love? It is no one else's business but the person involved. They should just take their preconceived bias and shove it up their *ss!

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I ran into this same issue at my office when Colby first got diagnosed with cancer. One of my coworkers scoffed at the idea I would even consider trying to save an 11 y.o. dog when it would "be much cheaper to just get a new dog..."

Some people just don't get pets and don't understand the emotional connection us normal people feel with our animals. Instead of getting mad at them, I pity them.

I went to a vet clinic last week (Tuesday) to follow up on my application. They told me they wouldn't be hiring until the spring, but they might take someone to shadow. There were other people that called before me, though the receptionist said it looked really good that I actually came in to try to talk to the vet personally.

I was planning on going again today to ask about shadowing again. I haven't heard anything from them. Is it a good idea to go again or not? What would I say?

I can't make it work.. :/

(add: this is about not being able to post a video. don't worry, not about the clinic job. hahaha)

PetP - Other opportunities will be out there. Maybe, since this one was only shadowing, it would be better to find a paid position if you can. Have you tried any low-cost spay/neuter clinics? That is how I got into it. You will make something work, don't worry.

haha thanks, but that was actually for something else. I was trying to post a video and couldn't do it.

I haven't gone to the clinic yet. I want to shadow there because they said whoever will shadow will most likely be hired later on. I'm just not sure what to say when I walk in for the third time..

I can't make it work.. :/

I think I called at least 10 vet clinics when I was first trying to find a place to shadow.

And when I moved to a new city, I called the vet I took my animals to and emphasized that I was a client.

Don't give up!

Again, "I can't make it work" wasn't about the vet clinic job. Hahaha but thank you. I will keep trying. :]

Ooops, I just looked at your previous post about trying to shadow. Well...good luck with both!

Thank you. I went there and they didn't seem too excited to see me again. I was told that I really just need to wait to see if I get a phone call. :/

Just want to put it out there.... you can also try going for a receptionist job. It gets your foot in the door, you still have contact with animals, and depending on the clinic you may have to hold for procedures as well. Once you're in, they'll know you and will probably be more then happy for you to shadow on your off days (i.e. watch sx, shadow appointments etc.)

They told me they're not hiring right now and I need to wait for a phone call regarding shadowing.

I'm looking if there are buses going to other vet clinics and then I'll drop off my resume there on thursday.

There is a professor here, that really wants me to take his class next semester, so that I can TA it the year after. He has told me several times now. There are two prerequisites for it though. I am taking one of these now, but the other one is the second part of the bio series. I will be taking the first part of it next semester. He said that it would not be a problem at all and that he'd waive the requirements for me. He seems to really want me to take his class, but I'm not so sure I should do it. I'm worried I might not have enough previous knowledge.

Here is the description:

Physiology of Reproduction in Domestic Animals

The basic understanding of the gross anatomy of the male and female reproductive system. Application of the principles of reproductive biology to domestic farm animals will be covered.

Would not having fulfilled the biology requirement be a big problem in your opinion? Should I go for it?

If your prof is willing to waive the requirement, I'm sure he thinks you'd fully capable of doing well in the class without the prereq. He knows his class and the material the best, so I'd trust him on this, but if you're concerned, just talk to him about it! He seems to definitely want you to do well and succeed, so I'm sure he'd be happy to talk to you about such things.

Plus, in my experience, prereqs aren't always there because you need the prior specific knowledge, but just to make sure that you have enough of the foundations and a sort of general background. (For example, at my school, for most 300-level biology courses, the prereq was just any two 200-level biology courses. So, I took a 300-level ecology course as my first ecology class, having taking genetics and molecular biology as the "prerequisites," which certainly I learned nothing about ecology in.)

Depends on what the second bio class is. Cells and molecules? Do you have a strong bio background? If not, I would wait. Don't feel rushed or pressured! Just take your time and make good grades. I am sure he can find someone else to fulfill his...demanding requests.
At my school, Repro is difficult. The professor expects the students to know a lot of cascades and different cells involved in repro. I think a strong bio foundation is needed.

He says he's not worried about it at all. He knows I want to to my prerequisites in three years, so I can apply for the first time in fall 2013. So the only way I could TA is if I take it next semester. That's why he wants me to take it now. I'm gonna talk to him again and see if I can get a syllabus and maybe the book he uses. He said he uses it a lot, so maybe looking at it will help me decide.

It sounds like he's very impressed with you already. It seems too good to pass up an opportunity to have someone in your corner like that to write you a great LOR for vet school when the time comes. Many people have to go begging for such opportuntiies. Go for it!

I didn't even think about that! Good point! He seemed very excited to be my advisor over the summer when I first met him. He liked that I had a plan for what I want to do and knew what I had to do for it. I still ask him about some classes, even though I have a different advisor. He's also gonna let me do research with him once he starts again. :]

Sounds perfect. If he's someone you like and respect and will enjoy working with/for, then I think it's the beginning of a beautiful professional relationship!

Hey all, do you think it is a waste of money to buy textbooks even if you found pdf versions of it?
I found pdf versions of textbooks used in my classes, but I prefer a physical book because I think it's better for the eyes right? Also you probably won't get sidetracked when you're away from a computer.

And does anyone play video games or used to?
I have fears of giving up that hobby because of the rigorous pre-professional curriculum.
How about all of you? What are some things you have stopped or you think you'll stop doing because of this career path?

I like the idea of saving money on the books, but for most classes I'd probably buy the actual book. I can't focus on reading on the computer for a long time for stuff like school. I have to have the actual book if there is something long to read.

I may or may not have illicit virtual copies of pretty much every book of mine this semester. I prefer .pdf versions because I always have my laptop with me, but I'm not very good about carrying textbooks.

Hobby-wise: I drew a lot more before undergrad... now I have to consider before starting any picture because I know it will take me hours and really, I could be doing something much more productive. I tend to work on things in small spurts of .5-1hr instead of 5-6 hour marathons now, so my output has dropped a LOT but I still get some of the stress relief in.

I have basically quit WoW for vet school - it's easier to do then it seems. I am WAY too busy to play very much and don't even realize when it has been weeks since logging in. (Before school, I easily logged a minimum of 15 hours in game/week) I jumped on and played a little over the holiday. It's good stress relief on slightly less busy weekends as well so I haven't cancelled my account, yet.....It's all about PRIORITIES. Make 'em - stick to 'em....

I have a quick question.. somebody is writing me a letter of recommendation for a program here at school, but he is not really sure how to start the letter/what would be acceptable for an US letter (he's German). I tried googling it, but all I found so far is "To whom it may concern." I thought I read somewhere that this is not really how you would start a letter anymore, so I was wondering if anyone knew what he should put at the top...

To whom it may concern is the typical opening for a letter of reference, unless there is a particular person the letter is going to.

It's a committee, but I don't know who is going to be on it. Thank you! I just wasn't sure if that's still what is used..

I don't think "to whom it may concern" is bad at all. If you google image search LOR, you'll get a couple of "dear sir or madam"s, but most of them are "to whom it may concern".

Since we're going all 'random question' here, I have one too. I'm taking a horseback riding class at school, and I've never done it before in my life. The horse I've been riding is 34 years old, and trips at least once every three times around the ring. The owners blow it off, saying he's just clumsy- but it makes me nervous! Is it safe to ride a horse that trips all the time?

I'm not saying he's fine or he's hurt/there's something wrong with him, because I don't know him, but I used to ride a horse that stumbled a lot, too. Some of them are just not watching where they're going or they are too lazy to pick up their feet.

I think you might be talking about cover letters, especially for small businesses or anytime you should know who it will be going to. Reasoning being that you sound like you're blasting resumes/cover letters to a ton of places and aren't particularly enthusiastic or knowledgeable about that particular position. For a LOR, I don't see why it would be regarded poorly for the recommender to start with "to whom it may concern." As long as the evaluator knows what kind of position you're going for, I don't think it matters that they know exactly who the letter's going to. The content is really all that matters, or at least I'd hope.

It's for a.. I guess you could call it "vet school guarantee program".. I don't know. If I get accepted and meet all the requirements, I get accepted to the UGA Vet School. It's a recommendation letter to apply for that program.

Wow- nice! Good luck!

Thank you. I am very nervous about it. I don't have much vet experience with food animal and that's what the program is focused on. I hope I at least make it to the finalists, so I can get an interview. I think that would help me more and show them that I am really serious about it.

Guessing from your picture, I would have imagined you'd have a lot of food animal exp. :p It sounds like your professors are big fans of yours- so you've got an edge!

Sadly not. I just think those mini cows are cute. I have thousands of hours with horses, but they don't count as food animals (yet, might change with the new slaughter house laws? I don't know..). So I'm shadowing a la vet for two or three weeks and have a dairy heifer show on Saturday. Hopefully that'll make it a bit better at least and get me that interview..

I have my first legit cupcake order/job this weekend. It's not a rant or a rave, so I'm posting my thoughts about it on this thread...

4 dozen cupcakes split amongst 3 recipes.

I got paid $125 (it's for a friend I've known since high school), but I'm feeling more overwhelmed the closer it gets.... not sure how to go about planning it all out, the baking, decorating and such. I thought I had a lot of the ingredients too but I wrote it all out today and it's getting more and more pricey I think :/ It's for her son's 3rd birthday party at the Children's Museum and I just want it to go well, you know, execution, transportation, whether the kids like them, etc.

So... I guess... there's that...

I bake and decorate cakes as a side thingy to bring in extra cash too!! Mostly cakes but sometimes cupcakes. Usually I bake and cover with saran wrap the night before and will make the frosting the night before as well (unless it's whipped cream). I then decorate day of. I'm sure this is not a new method to you lol. Just sharing my modus operandi. For big orders like that I try to get supplies at Sam's Club :) Good luck! I'm sure they'll turn out great!!

Thank you for that advice! I had planned to bake the cupcakes tomorrow night and then make up the frostings and decorate on Saturday prior to the event. It's at 3 in the afternoon, so if I wake up early I can whip up the frostings and decorate. I also have to drive 4 hours home tomorrow because that's where the event is, so that's why I'm limited on my time that I can do much else other than just get the cakes baked when I finally get home.

After thinking about it, I think I could go ahead and whip up my plain vanilla buttercream and have that ready, but the cherry-almond-vanilla and white russian frostings will probably have to wait til Saturday. But it's good to know I am on the right scheduling/planning track!

I've been googling for a little bit, but I'm not really sure what to look for, so.. Vet students, vets and pre-vets interested in food animal.. What are important current events related to food animals right now? I'm trying to prepare for my Vet Guarantee Program and was told sometimes there are current event questions. I'm not exactly sure what to focus on though, so if you have any ideas, thank you!

I get the "Animal Health Smart Briefs" send to my e-mail daily. It's great for presenting vetmed issues that make it into the mainstream media. Not great for technical advancements that don't make it past fancy journals, but you probably won't be asked about that anyway. I think dvm360.com is another website that has current info.

I second the Animal Health Smart Briefs. I signed up for them and had tons of issues on hand to talk about in my interviews (I'm a food animal person as well). This was one I found particularly interesting (but I also just had an entire biochem lecture on it, so maybe that's why ;)). You may have to sign up to view the whole article, but Animal Health Smart Brief was definitely helpful to find information. Sign up, it's free! :D

There is also the ban on horse slaughters...

Be sure to read up on the FDA trying to limit cephalosporin use in food animals. It's a pretty hot topic right now!
