Random Stuffs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone have any good recommendations for Stephen King books? Or any other books?

Anything by Patricia C. Wrede (it's mostly YA stuff)

Anything by Robin McKinley (If you don't like YA, she has a great adult novel called Sunshine)

The YA and older stuff by Garth Nix (I'm not as fond of his kid's books) e.g. the Abhorsen trilogy

My Family and Other Animals; Birds, Beasts, and Relatives - memoirs by Gerald Durrell

Dry Storeroom No. 1: The Secret Life of the Natural History Museum by Richard Fortey

If you like mysteries, I recommend Rex Stout, Dorothy Sayers, and John Dickson Carr (and most of their contemporaries)

Has anyone ever tried the clamp free curling irons? They are called "Wands"? I am interested in getting one and learning how to use it, but I want to hear some reviews from real people!

They look like this essentially:

I chopped my hair off a few months ago and haven't used a curling iron or wand since, but both my sister and best friend have them and love them (they both have below shoulder length hair). I can't remember what brands they have, so I can't recommend a specific one, but a big game changer for my sis was learning how to produce different types of curls.

Thanks gumtree!! Thats great to hear!! Are they really skilled in doing their hair? I am kind of hair-inept haha I can straighten it, but thats about it! So I am worried the wand might require some hair skills I won't be able to master!

Thank you for the link as well!!

I am a lurker and not a poster (this is actually my first post I believe), but I LOVE my curling wand. I am hair inept for the most part...pony tails and ironed straight are about all I do regularly. But I bought the Remington Large Pearl wand in January and it is my favorite. It is one that tapers from 1.5" down to 1". I have another one (Conair CD117 Tourmaline) that tapers from 1" to 0.5", but I think the curls are too tight with the smaller one. I prefer the big "beachy" waves I get with the larger wand. I don't use it every day, but for special occasions it is awesome. My hair is just about an inch or two below my collarbones.

There is a bit of a learning curve with it, but after a couple tries (and a few burns!) I got the hang of it. I don't use the glove because it makes it awkward and clumsy. Online tutorials are great. You can get anything from tight "Shirley Temple" curls to loose Victoria's Secret model-ish or "beachy" curls.

I have the Remington Pearl One..I have yet to perfect the technique for using it though since I got it during my year off and all I did was work and had my hair up all the time. The few times where I have been successful using it, I really liked how my hair turned out. I have naturally wavy hair and wanted a way to just define the waves/curls more.

I don't curl my hair. I have stick straight hair that doesn't hold curl to save my life. No matter what styler/products used.

Want to trade? I have hair that can't decide what it wants to do. Some days curly, some days wavy, never stick straight. Oh it also frizzes like crazy in humidity and is super thick.

Definitely wish I had hair like yours some days. 🙂 But the grass is always greener, I suppose...

I would say one is pretty good at doing her hair and one is OK. I couldn't even regular braid my own hair when it was longer so I don't know if I'm a very good judge.. I just know it looks good/more natural with the curling wand vs. curling iron.

</boring stuff>😴

I just finished making my end-of-the-year video to watch with my friends before graduation. I'm pretty happy with it, except that the "free" editing software I was using was apparently only a free trial and puts a watermark throughout my video unless I want to pay for it (which, at this point, I don't).

I had a random thought/question today (mainly because I got beaten by a weiner dog today). Is anyone a hemophiliac? I know it's an almost completely male disease but with such high risks of being bitten or scratched while on the job, I can't imagine this is a field for them. My knuckle bled for like an hour because of its location and I definitely would be annoyed/terrified if it wasn't able to stop on its own.

My roomie sent me this...and my cracked out finals brain couldn't even handle it. I died laughing within two seconds...

This spider just tried to kill me. It was going to eat me, I know it.

Still have the heebie jeebies. I can handle scorpions, snakes, flies, mosquitos, other bugs, but NOT spiders. I hate, hate, hate spiders. ugh

Ewwwwwwww!!!

I had a giant one like that try to kill me when I was England. I was just minding my own business "studying" at my desk and saw something move out of the corner of my eye. There was this giant spider crawling across my floor. I totally had a flatmate get rid of it for me.

I don't have a flatmate. Had to soak it in cleaning solution to make it stop moving then had to smash it with a magazine. I still have the goosebumps.

I am going to have nightmares about giant spiders tonight. :scared:
