I overheard a coworker talk about how much resent he feels for people who take in stray cats.
Why? Because he hates cats and thinks they are terrible animals.
I was a bit confused and asked him why on earth he works in animal medicine.
"It pays the bills, my dear. That's all."
Really? That is terrifying. I have had jobs that have "just paid the bills". I folded t-shirts, made burritos, scanned groceries. How can I expect them to treat a patient any different than I treated the t-shirt, burrito, or box of cereal?
The more I think about it, the more scary it becomes.
That's really weird. I could probably name a dozen different jobs that pay better and require less education in under sixty seconds. 🙄
Reminds me of a guy I met when I was zookeeping last summer. He came up and started chatting with me because he used to work for that zoo. When I asked if he was still working in animal science, he told me: "Nah, it didn't pay enough. It's fine for you, you're a girl. Your husband or boyfriend will provide for you. I'm a man, so I have to be the breadwinner."
His exact words. I took all my self-restraint not to punch him. 😡
