You mean 2:1.

But that's my point, an obsolete number is NOT a right statistic.

Otherwise anyone can cite the 3.3 to 1 ratio (only 30% of applicants getting accepted) from 1980 to say how horrendously competitive vet school is, when now a days, competition is half as fierce.

It's gotten easier as the number of seats have gone up. Over 62% of all applicants get into vet schools each year now, up from 50%.

That's a fair point. But then we as applicants shouldn't even look at previous year's statistics then because those statistics are technically obsolete. Or statistics found in research studies that are two years old. More over, 2014 is hardly irrelevant to 2016. Sure, 1980 is irrelevant as it was 35 years ago. But I would have to disagree with two year old statistics being irrelevant.

Edit: didn't see your new link before I responded. That's pretty good to know and I'll replace my link for the old one with that. I'll even go onto the APVMA Facebook page and post it and say, "I was wrong, guys. There's actually really only 1.6 applicants per seat." It's good to know that the new data actually supports my position better.

Well a lot's changed in 2 years. Think about new schools adding in a bunch of seats. So yes even 2 years can be a big deal.

It was also a big deal the year Ross and SGU became accredited. So year before then and a couple year after really had different landscapes.

Between year 2000 and 2002, nothing changed so it's like whatever. Same statistics. But as new info comes out you can't just say meh, it's only 2 years. The way admissions is handled, the way loans are handled... All of that changes very quickly.

And once you're in practice, things change sooooo very quickly.

Point being, if you have new reliable data, you go with the new data, especially if things have changed. Who cares how recently things changed. It still doesn't apply to now anymore.

That's also a valid point. I had forgotten that Midwestern and LMU opened only within the last few years. It feels like it's been longer than that, but it hasn't. I also keep forgetting that the data also includes all AAVMC schools, not just US schools, which were the only schools I was considering.

And I did just post that information over there so that those kids have it.

@wheelin2vetmed, yesterday at my friend's graduation, there was a seeing eye dog who got her honorary degree. I thought of you and Corky!! 🙂

Did her dog have a cap and gown? My Aunt and Uncle and a couple of my friends are coming to mine next week. I told them just to make a scene and cheer for my dog and not me when I get called.

Congrats on graduating 🙂.

She did have a cap and gown! It was so cute! And I don't graduate until May, I was just there for a friend. But thank you 😀

@batsenecal Our APVMA friend thinks women "don't realize" they can make more money outside of vet med. This guy is either horrible at communicating well or just an ass.

Oh, really? I'll have to creep over there and look.
Sometimes I wonder why I just don't unfollow the APVMA page, but then stuff like this gets posted and I realize how much entertainment it brings to me and my boring life.

I'm halfway tempted to start posting again, but eh... I know I'll never leave it be if I do. So I will just watch the craziness from the sidelines. :corny:

But, yeah, that guy seems completely delusional. And cranky.

I don't think this guy realizes that he has textbook 'oppressed white male syndrome.' 😛

Edit: also, I rarely post anymore. Occasionally, these type of posters come through and say some outrageous things and you just can't stay away. Unfortunately, the e-board does nothing to attempt to maintain the integrity of this page.

hahahaha "oppressed white male syndrome"

Perfectly describes this guy!
Bummer he deleted his post. He probably realized shortly after how absolutely absurd he was being (hopefully). "Stop making yourself look like a victim." 🙄 Guess I made up the whole 'women are consistently paid less than men for identical work' thing.

People like that really irk me though. It's almost scary. So incredibly ignorant.

He actually blocked you, his posts are still there. He said your "women are victims" was annoying him. Dude needs a serious reality check if he doesn't think women still face discrimination because of their gender.

I want to say something, but he's just pissing me off at this point so that won't go well.

Agreed, it's horrifying people our age still have these views.

Oh, well that's fine as well. He doesn't like being given a dose of reality and being treated with respect. Too much to handle. Based on the things he's said in the last few weeks (which is basically how long he's been posting total), dude needs to be blocked from the page in general.

Every once in awhile I go grocery shopping and I wonder if the cashier mentally thinks, "single female." Today my cart had Lean Cuisines, bottled water, and "cake for two" (total misnomer, no one just eats one piece of cake).

So, I actually e-mailed all of the exec board AND their veterinary advisors about how bad the page has gotten. I got a message from the president e-mail that stated: Due to situations beyond the APVMA's control, the President is not available at this time. If you have questions, concerns, or need to communicate with someone in the APVMA please contact one of the following APVMA Advisers.

I got a real live person reply from one of the advisors: Batsenecal, Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. You are correct int hat we need more control over posts on our FB page. I am not certain how that will take place but we will make this discussion is a priority at our next Executive Board meeting. Sincerely, Dr. Fraley.

So we'll see what happens.

I haven't been on Facebook since this morning during desk hours cause this weekend was crazy for my res hall (8 memos sent for 6 incidents) and I had a ton of ground to cover as a result. I wonder if he blocked me.

Edit: Nope, not blocked.

Seriously, great minds!

I also emailed the prez and got the same auto-reply. I then actually emailed the VP and explained that the page is getting bad and that there seems to be no one moderating content. I then offered my time as a content moderator, so I'll see what she says in reply. Maybe I'll email one of the advisers and offer as well. I really would be excited to do it.

Edit: Now I'm getting notifications for that post, but when I click my alerts, I'm brought to a dead page. I wanna know what's going on lol

Honestly though, do realize that your posts can be seen by anyone with your identity attached, and regardless of how right or tactful you think you might be in talking to ignorant folk, I can't say it reflects well on you. Especially for current applicants, I personally would advise against these postings. Especially with poor spellcheck/grammar.

Yeah you're probably right.

I do find myself telling current applicants not to drop the f-bomb on that page far too frequently. You'd think that something that obviously inappropriate would be a no-no, but apparently not.
I found pinkpuppy and batsenecal on fb 😛
Yeah. If you pay attention, you can easily figure out who quite a few people on here are, especially when they share their life experiences that are pretty unique.

****ing idjits

BUT WHERE IS WILDZOO?!?! 😉
You'll never find me! :ninja:

😛

Really though, Hmoo, keep being active on both pages. Eventually, you'll read something on either one and think "Gee, I've heard that exact phrasing/story somewhere else...."

That's how I figured out who @Gemgrrrl was 😛 Except she's since disappeared from SDN. I don't even remember what her name is now because I made the connection a really long time ago...or someone just has an identical life story. In which case they should be friends.

I didn't even know there was such thing as the APVMA, let alone the Facebook page! I will have to keep a look out now 😵

I think I've only ever had people find me through mutual friends. If someone has discovered my secret identity through any other means, I didn't know about it. Most of my fb info is set to private so it would be difficult to confirm anything 😉

FB setting on private... name on FB isn't my real name...

Yet, I still am friends with a bunch of these SDN weirdos.... it is like we are all some odd/strange family or something... just as long as they don't touch me or attempt to hug me all will be fine. :bored:

That's how I feel about my real family, too....😛 Although I think I talk to you guys more!

I'm resisting the urge to go plaster your Facebook with rainbows and virtual hugs.

I discovered it by other means!!!!!!

You revealed it to me.... 😛

I can see that. I guess an equivalent situation would be having a visible tattoo or non-traditional piercing to an interview. It's a risk that each person has to be willing to take.

The reason I comment back to those posts on a public forum is because the point of those pages is for pre-vets to help each other (disregarding the other problems with that page). Grossly incorrect information is not okay and should be called out. Yes, I posted incorrect information, after which I posted the correct information after admitting it was incorrect. That whole conversation is something I would have no problem doing with someone in real life. Even in an interview situation, I would have no problem standing my ground with the information I have or revaluating my opinion if presented with different information. If a school would not like how I handled myself online, they won't like how I would handle an interview anyways.

When you go to the store and boxes of chocolate are buy one get one free...

so I went to the store today and they had...chocolate mice ornaments.

They kind of looked like mice do before you thaw to feed them to a reptile and the hanging string was through the tail. I didn't think it was a smart marketing move

Are post-grad internships at places like Blue Pearl as respected as the ones at a veterinary school (comparing small animal medicine/surgery for both)?

I wouldn't say that it's equivalent to body art... I don't think of this as an issue of self expression. But honestly it doesn't matter what I think, as my opinion isn't worth anything at all. So you just keep truckin doing whatever you're doing.

(Just FYI it wasn't all directed towards you. I wasn't even talking about whatever misinformation you were putting out there.)
