For some reason a lot of people/ vets brought their children so I had a lot of children following me around. I was explaining what we were looking for in the kitties, when an 8 year old girl sternly told me "you know. You're not going to be a good veterinarian if you call all felines 'kitty'. So obviously I started calling every cat "kitty kitty meow meow", and then the angry cats would be "kitty kitty hiss hiss". I aspire to be @vetmedhead level of sassy :laugh:

Official veterinary terminology, phrases, and approaches only for use by consummate professionals who work on kitty kitty meow meows:
  • Kitty kitty meow meow
  • "Kitties are bad"
  • Kitty kisses must be administered to bad kitties immediately
  • Fuzz
  • *song about cats*
  • *song about ringworm*
  • Why does the fuzz (who is missing some fuzz) have ringworm? Remember kitties are bad. Fuzz knew it would inconvenience you
  • Kitties do not growl, they rev their kitty engines
  • Kitties do not hiss, they are just popping open hidden soda cans

Doing research for one of my classes and I came across this description of neutered dogs: “canine eunuchs, condemned to live their lives in a physical and mental twilight”. Now I will think of this strange quote every time I see a neutered dog haha
 
One of my wittle wabbits broke a nail at the quick. Blood everywhere. I was at work of course. Misch cleaned herself up well enough that I had to do a second more thorough search and look at each little toe.

Had a weird experience today. One of the IM doctors asked me to watch his 5 month old son briefly. Immediately kind of freaked and was "like uhhh, what do I do if it cries????" to which he basically said he'd be fine and he'll back back in like 5 minutes. I normally don't really know what to do with babies, but this one was actually really cute so I just kept talking to it for the whole time. Normally babies just cry around me but he was giggling and smiling. My uterus wants one for the like the first time ever.

5-6 months is when they start getting to be more enjoyable. Life is great once they can sleep for 6hours straight
 
Pay days would be more fun if I weren't saving half of my earnings.

Fun Story: I went to a professional/graduate event last weekend. Over the course of the morning and afternoon this girl from another table kept stopping by and talking with people at my table. She never actually introduced herself so I don't know her name but I do now know what foods she doesn't eat, how much she exercises every week, and that she doesn't like the way she looks in a bikini. It was bizarre.
 
So the little grocery store by my apartment carries a higher protein, lower sugar ice cream (Halo Top!) that is actually pretty good, but they are always basically sold out. Admittedly, it's not as good as 'real' ice cream but way better than other calorie restricted ice creams I've tried before and it has literally 1/4 the calories of regular ice cream. Tonight I decided to go to the larger store a couple blocks away since I figured they'd carry more flavors of it...they don't even carry it there at all! So I go to another bigger store a little farther away...they only have three flavors, two of which I have already tried. So go back to my normal little store and they have literally twice the flavor options. Nothing like wasting an hour on a 'good' idea when if you'd just done what you normally done it would have turned out the same. Anyway, now I'm back at home eating cookies and cream Halo Top so I guess it's all okay now!

My dad started getting Halo Top whenever it appeared in our stores, and he's always been into those diet ice creams so now he gets it all the time. I like it well enough, but to me none of their other flavors compare to the Birthday Cake one!

I loooove HaloTop! Been doing keto so having an ice cream option is a godsend. I have a store that carries all the flavors :cyclops:
 
This is off-topic and I don't think I should make an entire thread since it's more for techs than vet students, but does anyone have any recommendations of clinics/zoos/facilities that may be open to taking on externs from a vet technology program? Particularly those that offer housing?

I have to take my first externship this summer, so I'm starting to look for potential sites so I can get approval and all that. We can go just about anywhere, as long as the experience is supervised by a DVM/LVT. I have more of an interest towards zoological facilities than GP/specialty clinics, so I can look through AZA but I'd especially love to hear about any large/equine/food animal or other interesting opportunities, since I don't have a reference point for those.

Since this will be 3 weeks during the summer, I don't mind location, but some form of temporary living arrangement would be necessary. So far have been recommended a couple of specialty clinics in Louisiana and Florida that have intern housing, and the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore (contacted, still waiting to hear back on whether or not they offer housing).

NC Zoo has fairly cheap (and nice) housing, don't know their rules for students outside of the state though. Carolina Raptor Center was trying to figure out a housing situation for externs when I was there, too, so maybe something there now for their raptorvet program.

...and my random contribution. I somehow wandered onto videos of yo yo championships and I've been enthralled for like twenty minutes:

Most equine places will offer housing. Peterson & Smith as well as Ocala Equine (both in Ocala) offer housing as far as I know. Both great facilities from what I know, although my only experience is with the former. I spent some time at Loomis Basin Equine and West Coast Equine (Northern California and near Malibu respectively) and they both had housing as well.

[edit] I stayed on site when I spent a month at Coral Springs (small animal) in Florida but I'm not sure if the housing is open to vet tech externs as well as vet students. Worth asking about 🙂
 
I spent about 1/3 of my usual biweekly grocery budget on one delivered meal from a local restaurant tonight. I also spent the day cleaning so I was too tired to put on real clothes and go get groceries. I suppose that kind of evens out... somehow. At least my rabbits can be happy that their rabbitat is completely clean now. I know that I'm pretty happy that my bedroom, kitchen, and laundry room are clean and organized again.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park (California)
Marine Mammal Center (California)
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (Colorado)
Cincinnati Zoo (Ohio)
Calgary Zoo (Alberta)
 
I remember when I was in elementary school, from time to time some people would come and do extreme tricks like that to advertise their yo-yos. (it worked and I definitely convinced my parents to let me get a glow in the dark one, lmao)

And thanks for the recs so far! I looked around last night and saved some possible zoo and equine/large places, will keep looking after this week. There were a few externships/internships I saw (like the Marine Mammal Center) that are more geared for post-graduation/post-NVTE techs.

Oh I had a glow in the dark yo yo. Tragically it broke when I threw it at my brother and it hit the wall at full force instead (I am not a baseball player). Not that I could do anything with it anyways. Once in a blue moon I could make it come back up- but that's rare
