Ie owner waiting until the absolute last minute to call in on ER right as I was getting ready to change for bed for suspected parvo that had been going on all day, oh and they're 40 minutes out. Just stupid things like that. Clients complaining is really just chapping me and I'm feeling in a very firing mood.

Idk just feeling very meh and outloud hating my job right now. Thanks for listening.

When was your last vacation?
 
I switched some ER shifts around and took the night shifts Friday to Sunday to help out a coworker. Now I have three shifts of records to finish. My home setup kind of sucks at the moment so I found out today that doing lots of records at home is apparently hugely frustrating. I’ll be working four days in a row the end of this week. I’m kind of dreading that after this recent block. I’m going to have to see if my med director can keep me to two days in a row max until I get more comfortable, especially since many shifts I’m the only doctor on and everything slows down when I have to research treatments or reach out to consult on cases.

I cried when I left my undergrad job. It had become a huge part of my life, I learned so much, and my coworkers were like family. It’s ok to be sad, but remember this is a new beginning! And you can always go back and visit like I do whenever I’m in the area
 
Quitting my job a bit early worked out because my mom had to have rotator cuff surgery so I'm here to help her through recovery because my dad still works full time....but omgggg why are human patients so hard sometimes? I'm exhaustedddd, but glad I can be here for her during this time. It was really hard seeing her in pain during the time it took to get it worked up and determined to be a tear, so now we're just on the road to recovery. so small YAY.
 
Neighbors behind us had to cut down one tree because it started cracking. I'm glad I'm not worried about it landing on the powerlines, but the yard looks so different now. Thankfully there is still plenty of shade, but you get used to something in 7 years.
 
Didn't we used to have a general advice thread going at one point? I have a lot of downtime at my newer job right now (not complaining!) so have been browsing SDN to fill the gaps :laugh:

It's good to see that a lot of the oldies are still active on here, I feel like since we've 'been around the block' it would be cool to resurrect it and add to it. Or maybe I'm confusing this with APVMA, although I abandoned that ship looooong ago.
 
Not sure how much more clear I can make a recommendation to someone if they don't understand over the phone and via email...have a p with excised cutaneous t cell lymphoma. Recommended 2 mo ago when sx happened that they go to onco for aus and Ln biopsy if they wanted further work up or not and sent estimate for if we did Ln biopsy but that we can't do aus to the level they need. Or they could do monitor and "palliative care" Got a call from onco today saying to call o and re-go over things bc o wasn't sure why they were coming...punted phone call back to staff. I do not have time for this type of nonsense🙃

Two things bug me here:

1. I feel like this was a dropped teamwork moment by onco (superficial judgement since I don't know their side). But I feel like they could tell the client, "You're here because you dog has cancer and your GP has reached the end of their diagnostic capabilities. We'll go over options for diagnostics and treatment." This is assuming your notes and comm logs are good.

2. There's only so much you can do. If they don't understand their dog has cancer and they have plans A and B, then you're not going to change anything.

Yeah I'm not really sure why onco called us either I thought it was wierd too

It's like I explain everything in depth and follow up with email for no reason.

Tbf I expect too much. Had an o decline a dental and "mass removal" because the p didn't need a dental despite it being cheaper than doing just the straight mass removal. O called today saying p still isn't really eating...hmm I wonder why. Staff went over options multiple times and that the dental with mass removal was cheaper but alas🤦‍♀️ only the mass is the problem
 
Things I thought I'd never do...add catching cardiac tamponade and successful pericardialcentesis to the list ✅️

Is one of my techs dogs. P ultimately already has Mets and likely will rebleed but feel like a boss. P went from practically dead to sitting up and wagging tail in like 10min...amazing

When I told my husband I was considering applying, what the time commitment was, and that it wasn't paid, he was like, "Why are you like this?"

It depends on the person, I think. Opinions seem very mixed. A lot of people absolutely love it and go every year, but I see just as many people talk about how much they disliked it. It's a massive, very chaotic conference. There are a ton of lectures though, obviously!

As for connections, it depends on your career goals. If you want to do a specific specialty, it would make more sense to go to the specialty's main conference (AVCS summit, AAZV conference, etc.). You could definitely meet people at VMX, but it would be harder to weed out the specific people you'd want to introduce yourself to.

To add, the chaos seems to have really amped up over the last few years with the conference attendence nearly doubling in size.

Agreed with PP that going to the main conference of your interest would likely be more worthwhile, or trying more smaller conferences. I went to VECCS last year, which was great. I'm hoping for ABVP and the state wide conference next year. If you're wanting to move somewhere specific, the smaller conferences aren't a bad way to network with local hospitals.

I liked it for the variety but hated the transportation system when i went 2 years ago. They were trying to be green but had to plan to leave at least a half hr or more early to make sure I made it to the lectures I wanted if my bus was full....
 
I think VMX is really fun to go to as a student. It's Orlando! there's cheap AF hotel rooms, you can make a trip out of it to Universal or Disney, the lectures are pretty general and it doesn't really matter if you make it to a certain number because you're not paying a ton to be there/requiring CE.

Plus the exhibit hall is great. I literally threw away the last of my pens from a VMX (NAVC at the time!) trip from my second year of vet school like... last year. I spent literally half a day with a classmate accumulating swag, lol. I go to much smaller focused conferences nowadays and there's just not nearly as much swag. 😢
 
I joined as I was supposed to submit my first application, so I was definitely already married and living in a house. I think I was 22 (listen, it’s very mathy business so I’m not gonna ponder it too hard).
 
Everytime I travel I'm greatfully reminded about the world outside of the US. Met a guy from Switzerland said hit him up if we're ever there. Meeting US and Japanese friends tomorrow whom we haven't seen in 5-7+ years. Been living in a nonenglish world the last week and thankful for the kindness shown to us but also that numbers are the same no matter what country we are in. Tentatively have our next 2 trips decided on.🤞

Idk how to describe it. Idk if other places are just more worldly because they're closer to other countries or better educated or maybe all of the above (of course there are always exceptions). There's just alot of mindsets in the US that if those people traveled outside of the US maybe they'd realize some of their ideals are selfish/impractical/droctronian whatever you want to call them. Just always wishing our country could do better and if I became independently wealthy I'd pry live in a different county. Thanks for reading my deep train thoughts 😅
 
It's definitely a privileged mindset to think that "just travel" would solve all our problems (not to suggest that's what your point was) but interacting with people that have different beliefs, mindsets, and cultures is very important to a person's development in my opinion, and unfortunately a lot of people in the US just don't get that opportunity (or in some cases, actively avoid it, though to be fair there's plenty of insular groups and people outside the States). Would be nice if, say, a nationwide rail network allowed people from underprivileged backgrounds to explore other states and countries (yes Canada and Mexico do have different vibes even if they aren't Spain and Australia) but I digress

Oh and government mandated PTO

I got my flu and COVID vaccines today. It hurt because I got them in the same arm. I also got the flu shot first. My COVID shots have always hurt more than my flu shots.

I am 29 and the pharmacist offered me a sucker. Of course, I took it. 🙂

That’s awesome! I’ve wanted LASIK for years…too chicken to go for it considering I already have dry eyes. I’m jealous that you wake up being able to see every day now :laugh:

It’s amazing. Check to see if any meds you are on cause dry eye. I had intermittent dry eye previously and my ophthalmologist told me antihistamines can cause major dry eye! Surprised post op I have no dry eye a week out.
 
Just wondering if anyone on here is in cardio. I’ve experienced the classic fourth year change-up and was bit by the cardio bug (of course I like one of the most competitive specialties lol 🙃)

Can't think of anyone here. But a classmate of mine *finally* got a cardio residency last summer I believe. She did a rotating internship and a specialty internship if I remember correctly. I can message her if you'd like to see if she'd be up to networking.

I love cardio <3 Honestly, its been the catalyst for me to go back to school / subsequently apply to vet school with the intent to become a cardiologist. (I have worked in the field for almost two decades and have been with a boarded cardiologist for nearly 5 years). Long road ahead of me, but the time will pass anyway.
