I've seen this thread at a few other forums and thought I'd start one for Peds.

I'm having trouble deciding between the following:
1. EVMS at Kings Daughters
2, Thomas Jefferson at Dupont
3. U Conn
4..NYMC at Westchester

I'm primarily looking for a program that will prepare me well for a GI fellowship.

I went to med school at NYMC (albeit a number of years ago) and did residency at EVMS. What specific questions do you have? Feel free to PM me if you'd like.

For NYMC, I'm curious about how well the residents got along, whether the administration was receptive to their opinions if something needed to be changed. Also do you feel like the residents were over worked or unhappy? How long was rounding? Anything you didn't like?

As for EVMS, I hear they work the residents really hard and that's what I'm most worried about. Did you feel like it was still doable?

I felt the EVMS worked residents hard as well- I think I heard the line "We are so spoiled" 20 or more times from staff and residents but we only had 1 resident make our pre-interview mixer. My favorite part of my interview was the innkeeper.... Personally I didn't feel I would mesh well with the residents.

It's been a while since I've been to NYMC, but my recolection was that the residents were busy, and got along pretty well. They tended not to like going to Our Lady of Mercy, the hospital in the Bronx. Not sure how receptive/responsive the program is, but I remember the attendings being pretty cool. The children's hospital is a MUCH nicer environment than the main hospital at Westchester.

As for EVMS, they do work hard, but I never felt overworked. I practiced for several years prior to doing fellowship, and I can tell you that I was very well trained and prepared.

Hopefully you'll work hard at any residency (and hopefully you want to), and I don't think that CHKD/EVMS is any worse than others. The program director is one of the kindest people I know, and he's an advocate for his residents in every way. They are very responsive to input and intent making things better for the program.

Thank you Stitch for your response! I'll take it into consideration.
