Why would shelf matter at all other than it may affect ur overall clerkship grade I would think step 1 >>> honoring clerkship/step2

I know you have to show strength in all aspects. But if you had to put emphasis on a particular score, which one would matter most in terms of getting into residency?

It depends on the specialty, but generally it goes Step 1 => Clinicals > Step 2

I've heard numerous EM PDs independently say that they valued Step 2 more than Step 1 and felt it correlated better with future clinical performance. All West Coast programs, YMMV in other regions.

Most people don't have their Step 2 scores back when they apply so the only filter available to the PDs is step 1. Therefore, to get your foot in the door, Step 1 is definitely the most important.

If you mean 3rd year grades instead of shelves:

Step 1 > 3rd year grades > Step 2
