So, I am trying to decide between different places to spend the month before starting internship... Figure mid-may to mid-june shouldn't be too expensive, especially in this climate. Btw, have about 120,000 air miles so airfare won't be an issue.
1. Costa Rica
2. Spain/Portugal
3. New Zealand (have seen about half the North Island)
4. Australia
5. Rent a sailboat in the caribbean (it's still pre-hurrican season)
6. Egypt

Having just seen Vicky Christina Barcelona, I'm gonna have to vote Spain.

I've been to Costa Rica, and it's nice, but you've got some pretty good places on that list. Australia is another vote.

Now THIS is the right kind of rank list question. Bravo.

All I know is, one of the best memories I have is of sitting in a bubbling hot spring in Costa Rica watching lava spew out of the Arenal volcano while sipping a Long Island.

That was so, so money.

You can't go wrong with any of your choices really, but in terms of bang for your buck, I think Costa Rica is just a great place to go. It'd be the wet season, but just go hit up happy hour during the daily afternoon monsoon and all is well.

That's a great list of places to go.

I lived in Portugal for a coupla years while following an athletic dream. I'm telling you - what a wonderful, beautiful place. And the people are some of the most genuine, kindly folks that walk the Earth. Beaches that are to die for, and some of the coolest clubs I've ever seen...one called Marques Pombal that is multi-story, and to get from one floor to another you take gigantic slides! Anyways, PM me if you decide on it.

Another that I would add to your list, and the place I'm strongly considering travel to after fourth year, is Argentina. I also found it wonderful (Buenos Aires is not the most beautiful metropolis, but the rest of the country is incredible). Importantly, the Euro isn't here (obviously) so your money still goes for miles...Portugal used to be wonderful and cheap, but Argentina is still now wonderful and cheap. Only drawback is it'll be not-summer weather around then; not freezing cold, just not super warm.

Whatever you choose...have fun

1) I've done the North and South Island of New Zealand, Wellington is where it's at. One Island of New Zealand is enough I think. Go elsewhere. 😎 Besides, how much sweet chutney can one person eat!? 🙂

2) Costa Rica, very wise choice, but why not go to Belize and visit the Blue Hole?

3) Eu fala portuguese! Lisbon, it's on my list. Favorite author is portuguese, speak the language, love the food, might be a nice time of year, if not a little rainy. Spain, sure, why not.

4) Australia. I'm projecting here, but I'm NOT EVER flying to the South Pacific again (NZ) without stopping in my dream location: French Polynesia. I suggest you do the same: Bora Bora.

5) Caribbean, heck, I'd sail there in the MIDDLE of hurricane season. May-June water temps aren't what they are in September-October, but they aren't that far off. I'd say 82 ish for you. October can get to 87+.
BATHTUB TIME. I have a sea surface temp bookmarked on my Safari.
I live in Fl and wait until things get to 84 before going to the beach. 83 if I'm especially needy of the agua. 😀

6) Egypt. You're an outdoorsman clearly. How about combining the epic history of Egypt with the European flair of Spain and go to Southern Italy and catch Pompeii. It's U-N-R-E-A-L!

1 sounds good

5 sounds awesome. Depending on how good you are. It would be a shame to perish in the middle of the ocean prior to starting your dream job 😛

The SE Asia nomination is intriguing as well. Although I believe it's sweltering at that time of year.

Great problem to have.

Don't go anywhere that you is fairly easy to visit in a 9 day period as that will be easy to do during and after residency. Go someplace that you really need 2-3 weeks to get to, equilibrate and see. Those stretches of vacation are going to be hard to come by anytime soon.

So I'd throw out anyplace in Europe or the Western Hemisphere. My choice would be australia and/or NZ.

Second Argentina, but not what I would choose before residency. I'd prefer the Caribbean. Careless.

I laughed when I visited Argentina in June. It was like 50 F outside, and you would have thought it was the north pole. Fur coats everywhere.

how about tijuana?? i heard they have petting zoos and some of the classiest ladies in the world.

spain....topless beaches, excellent public transportation, barcelona, madrid... I had a great time there.
