Cornell=NYU>Columbia>>>>>all others.

Isn't Beth Israel shutting down all of its residency programs in a year or two?

If you're thinking IR then Mt Sinai should be your number one. No clue about Diagnostic prestige.

Which of the "big name" academic places would a average-below avg applicant have a shot at?

I don't think any of the 'big names' have a large number of avg to below avg matches. There are probably exceptions at every program, but I would think the main university programs in NYC are matching above avg applicants for the most part.

There are good programs in NYC that the avg applicant would have a shot at - Sinai affiliates, Lenox Hill, Maimonides, etc.

I would also consider Winthrop which isn't technically in the city but accessible by train if you wanted to commute and a solid program.

Can you help with ranking these mid tier NYC programs?

University Programs:
Montefiore / Albert Einstein (in the Bronx)
Jacobi / Albert Einstein (in the Bronx)
SUNY Health Science Center (Kings County/University Hosp Brooklyn)
Hofstra North Shore-LIJ

Affiliates/Community:
Maimonides (in Brooklyn)
Icahn at Mount Sinai - Beth Israel
Icahn at Mount Sinai - St. Luke's/West
Harlem Hospital

Monte is pretty solid. After that, I would say Hofstra-LIJ. Then Beth Israel (although isn't this program closing??? I am pretty sure Beth Israel hospital is closing, last I checked), then St. Lukes, then SUNY Downstate (horrendous area and population, but makes for some good training!), Harlem Hospital, Maimo, Jacobi, and I didn't even know NY Methodist had a program?

There were rumors a couple of years ago that NYU and Cornell were filtering out anyone with a sub-250 Step 1. How much truth there is to that, I don't know.

Absolutely false. Last year, I know some people who interviewed and matched at both programs with 240's.
