Not sure if this had been done recently, but was curious to see how people would rank out all the different specialties based on how tiring/strenuous their residency training is. I know this is dependent from program to program and person to person, but I think with discussion people could come to a consensus.

I don't really have much to contribute so guess I'll stick out some probably not too controversial bookends to start the thread.

(Least) Psych

how tiring something is, will depend on where you do your residency. For instance, within the same field, one programs could be a 40 hour a week vacations while others you work 100 hours a week and are beaten with a stick. It is not just the field.

I know, acknowledged that in my original post, we are talking on average here

the average is a worthless metric in this case

I have no clue on this, but I am suspecting ER would be high stress? And Radiology/Pathology and maybe Family Medicine pretty low stress?

Least (in general, although they obviously have their stressful times) - RadOnc, Derm, Psych, Family, Outpatient anything, Radiology, even IM/Peds (if you have night float and aren't working 24 hour calls), maybe Ophtho, Anesthesia

Most (generally) - Surgery (unless you have a NF system), NSG, Ortho?. Can't think of other residencies that routinely cross the 80 hour work week maximum.
