Would you really change your ROL based on a position in a magazine?

Thats f-ing *****ic.

And a ranking of MEDICAL SCHOOLS (not residencies) no less!!!

Here is a clue for you---> Harvard University Residency Program?????

Did you really just discover US News & WR.

Dude, chill out.

Besides, if you ask me, the list isn't too bad of an approximation of how the programs stack up reputation-wise.

In response to some inflammatory remarks made about my post:

1. I did not just discover USNews. I was surprised by the length of the list, because in my experience, the magazine only publishes the top ten.

2. I realize that the rankings were about medical schools' IM departments. But it is not very hard, especially for ubiquitous folk, to extrapolate that the top 30 probably correlates well with the top residency programs.

3. I would not change my ROL because I am very happy with my order. I based my list on what I feel is important. However, a general idea of the top programs in the form of a list is an excellent source for those brilliant folk applying next year.

4. I really hope that I match at a place with mean people. It will make my training so much more enjoyable.

5. Peace out.

OK maybe a little harsh but I was just AMAZED.

but

now you have gone 2 steps beyond and thrown in a few lies

W H Y

so here is my reply point by point

1. cant be true -- USN&WR publishes no top 10s that I am aware of in any area of Med or Edu. The list presented by you is short by comparison to most they publish. Conclusion-you have no experience with USN&WR.

2. A. No you did not (internal medicine specialty),
B. this has nothing to do with extrapolation, look the word up in dictionary
C. It does >NOT< correlate at -- why dont you go to the web site and read before you speak any more on this.

3. you said too bad its already after ROL due -- as if you or we had missed out on an opportunity THIS time arround

you made no mention of "next year" or of benefit to others
i think this is more BS

4. I guess that was sarcasm? yes we are clearly like oil and water let us hope that we do not end up together.

5. Peace

Remember you asked for comments -- I would have kept my frustration to myself had you not invited me to express it.

Rig - you too are wrong, why cant you guys just go educate yourselves before you expound for the masses.

Become aware, iamubiquitous. The PAPER edition of USNews does publish the top ten Specialty Rankings for several areas, such as internal medicine. Go pick yourself up a copy. The online version lists several more programs than the top ten. To clarify, I believe that this ranking reflects medical schools' departments of internal medicine.

Thank for the advice. I looked up extrapolate. Merriam-Webster's online dictionary defines extrapolate as:

1 : to infer (values of a variable in an unobserved interval) from values within an already observed interval
2 a : to project, extend, or expand (known data or experience) into an area not known or experienced so as to arrive at a usually conjectural knowledge of the unknown area <extrapolates present trends to construct an image of the future>
b : to predict by projecting past experience or known data <extrapolate public sentiment on one issue from known public reaction on others>

According to the second definition, I used extrapolate correctly. I took the USNews rankings of Internal Medicine Specialties, and arrived at conjectural knowledge of residency rankings (something that no one seens to know).

I would not have changed my ROL based on this list, but some applicants MAY have. So, it is too bad that I found it after our lists were due THIS year. But next year's applicants may have a benefit.

Thanks for your comments.

Handsports,

Clearly you did not understand that "ubiquitous" is the world's expert on US News and World Report. I'm certain you would have worded your responses differently if you knew this.

From my understanding, "ubiquitous" has read every copy of US News, from cover to cover, and his home is littered with past editions.

It's an amazing talent, you must understand. For a guy to committ this much USELESS information to memory is quite an accomplishment.

But there were sacrifices. Memorizing US News and World Report comes at a cost. When most of us were studying organic chemistry and physics, this gentleman was reading the "Report" (as he so loving calls it.) Thus, his undergraduate GPA sufferred--dropping to a 2.5 according to a previous postHERE

Still, even with this reputation for ignoring all other forms of media (and text books for that matter), ubiqitous seems to feel free in recommending books for OTHER people to study. Thank goodness there are people like him in the world, people helping people.

I'm sorry Handsports, but you should have known this. Take my advice: Don't ever challenge the master on his material. It'll bite you in the butt every time.

Iamubiquitous is no "f-ing *****" you know!

I will take your word for the paper copy issue and not respond
though I have been reading that magazine for years.
I assume you found some truncated lists in table form that are printed and therefore published--is that it?

I really wish that you had addressed more of my remarks
in the most recent post.

I know I told you to use the dictionary. That was wrong of me, in spirit and in purpose.

Here is how that word works by example

To interpolate is to add data by infer. >between< two anchor points.

ie 1-10 where only 1,3, 5, 7, 9, and 10 are given.

In this case I can i n t e r - polate (2) by assuming that it is half way between 1 and 3.

concerning e x t r a - polate I could, using the same example, extrapolate 11 by assuming that it is one step (unit) beyond 10

ie the dist. between 9 and 10 multiplied by 2.

in your post you were not adding an extra pole to an existing
data set--------you were trying to link two different data sets
ie
compare apples and oranges.

Hope this helps

PS: that last remark WAS NOT meant to be condescending

examine your def #2

paying special attention to the bracketed part😉

FGIG,

now that was a SUPERB post

except for the part about the GPA
NOT COOL

If I were to share the reason for that GPA you would feel pretty stupid.

I wont

So that your humorous post wont be marred🙂

IMU

ps I have read about a hundred copies of that magazine😉

My God you people are lame. You guys are 4th year medical students. Go out and have some FUN for ONCE in your life and RELAX!!!!!!!!

Gish: Thank you for that wonderful observation and recommendation. I shall take it under advisement.

Ubiq: sorry about the low blow. Got carried away.

Gish
89 more hours
then i will stop the nail nibbling
and other neurotic behaviors
and take you up on that

then again 72 hours later

FGIG

no biggie

I get carried away too from time to time
as you probably know😉

Glad to see that there are people just as stressed as I am about upcoming match day. Yes, let's air it all out and blast each other.

Anyway, just in case anyone is interested, there is indeed a Top 10 US News ranking of Internal Medicine programs. It's published annually in the Graduate Guide--this thick copy that you have to pay extra to get. I didnt get it, but my school sent us an email with the ranking. I've erased it, so I must go from memory here as to what was top 10:

1. harvard; hopkins
3. UCSF
4. UPenn
5. Wash U
6. Duke
7. UW
8. Michigan
9. UTSW
10. Columbia

The rankings were purely based on reputation.

I cannot understand why anyone cares about these rankings. Please share why it is important.

Is it a personal/ego thing?

Or, do you think whether you go to the #2 program or the #8 programs is really going to have any effect on your career? I certainly don't think the fellowship programs care.

good points and questions

i agree

dont expect a response to those questions on this thread though

Just an FYI: I am the "real" ubiquitous, not "iamubiquitous".

Hey, I've got a rep to protect! 😀 😎
