Anytime I've mentioned great news to coworkers (ex. grad acceptance, job offer, etc); I always get the same deadpan expression with the courtesy, "Oh, wow...." (couldn't seem any less excited)🙄
I think it boils down to the fact that a lot of people can't express genuine excitement for others because they don't feel good about themselves. Like maybe they are in a job rut, hate their career, failed at school, what have it! They only wish they were in your position! And the cranky vet you work with? Obviously, he is just passing time for retirement. :whistle:He wishes he had that spark back that you have (or maybe he never did and this is depressing him). People like that are probably thinking, "Why be excited for others' accomplishments when I look back on my own life with regrets?"

So, yeah my life kind of sucks right now, lost my job...trying to go back to school..taking classes again...dreaming of a vet career, but you know what? I can genuinely say congratulations and good luck in vet school! I get so excited when I hear about others like you making it to vet school. What an accomplishment!😀 It makes me excited about my future! Right now it is all about you, so enjoy that dinner and have some fun!:soexcited:

I wouldn't feel too bad about it. The vet might have even just been musing about how hard it is for ANYONE to get into vet school without "knowing" someone in general. I doubt it had anything to do with you specifically.

One of my eLOR writers said something similar, remarking about how he must have written one heck of a letter. I know him well enough to know he was joking and to know that he WAS proud of me, but if I hadn't known him all that well or if I was feeling super sensitive I might have thought the same thing you are.

As for your coworkers, I wouldn't chalk that up to anything but pure jealousy. Unfortunately it can be hard for someone "stuck" where they are to be happy for someone who is moving towards something they want for themselves. Don't worry about them one bit.

I think we're all just super sensitive about this subject, and we have in our minds exactly how we hope our families/friends/mentors will respond. Then when they respond in the best way they can or the way they feel appropriate, we feel let down. It's okay to feel like that, but just try to cut people some slack. When I told my girlfriend I was really disappointed at first. I called her up and when she answered I said "I did it!!!!" And she said "....yay?" My enthusiasm was totally deflated and I was like "REALLY? I've been waiting my whole life for this moment and that's the reaction I get?" And she was like "Wait what did you do?" and I was like "I GOT INTO VET SCHOOL" and she was like "AHHHHHHH" and everything was all better. So sometimes little bits of communication lines getting crossed can lead to hurt feelings.

In the end, just know that what you accomplished is absolutely incredible, something that only about .00083% of people in this country do every year. You should be proud of yourself, and we here at SDN are DEFINITELY proud of you.

And screw your coworkers/vet. They're probably just jealous. The people who b*tch about others' success are usually unsuccessful for a reason.

I had a similar thing happen to me last year (though not at work). The girl running the cat rescue with me went to our vet to drop off a cat around this time of the year. The vet asked "so did minnerbelle get into vet school?" with a disgusting smirk (along with the techs listening in). My friend very enthusiastically listed off the schools I got into, and his response was, "hm... even I wasn't good enough to get into US schools and had to go overseas." Apparently like 3 of his techs applied the same cycle, and all of them were rejected very early in the cycle pre-interview. It seems like I must've been the butt of their jokes every time they were lifting themselves up when feeling crummy about their rejections. They must've seen me as the girl-who-wasn't-good-enough-to-become-a-tech-and-settled-for-working-with-a-hoarder 🙄.

Actually, I all of the sudden remembered something. I had an interview back to back with Penn and Ohio during one weekend, and I came back with an acceptance on the spot at OSU. When I told my coworkers I'd been accepted at OSU that Monday morning, one of my bosses was like "Wow congratulations!... but you don't want to go there right?" He seemed puzzled when I said that it's probably like my top choice after CSU. Then I got the call from Penn like an hour later, and he was soooooo excited. I guess that's what happens when you work in the human medical setting and everyone around you is Harvard Med School faculty.

Ok, a couple of rants.

First of all, I started thinking about grade deflation tonight. I have gone to two really hard schools (mid-undergrad transfer) and my grades look pathetic next to my friends who go to state schools. Not that state schools aren't challenging or anything but UGH the way non-state schools grade is just so frustrating! I once had a chem prof tell me that I would get a C in his class if I learned the material really well and really applied myself in his class. Well, I did just that and a little more and I got a C+. At any other non-private school I would have easily gotten an A in that class. Same goes for a lot of my other classes (although he was the worst case of grade deflation). Ok, so I understand that we should work really hard for our grades and that not everyone should get an A but I feel like if I spend a good 40+ hours a week studying, I show up to class early everyday, and I participate in class discussion I should get A's and high B's! Or at least something better than a C+! Anyways, I hope that vet schools can see that I have gone to really hard undergrad schools and they can see past a slightly lower GPA (like, a 3.4).

Another rant is about communication. I feel like people haven't been listening to me lately and we've been coming away from conversations with completely different conclusions about what we thought we agreed on. Not necessarily because we have bad communication skills but because we think we should just know what each other is thinking because we're "so close." Idk if that makes sense. I wish that we could have communicated better in the first place so that we wouldn't have to fight about it later. GRRRRR

Third rant is about not knowing exactly how it's going to go down in the next few months. The schools I applied to wait a bit longer to send out decisions than most. It's so frustrating to me that I can't plan for anything past the end of school until my schools throw me a bone in March! I need to start NOW. Otherwise I'm not going to have as many opportunities. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm bad at waiting and I hate not being at least 90% in control of my future.

I feel you on this one! I haven't even had my interview yet and it seems like 90% of SDN already knows where they're going! I won't know for sure until April, I think (although the poor Canadian applicants have to wait much longer than that! Eek!) and I'm such a planner/organizer that it stresses me out not knowing either way. I have so much to think about IF I get in and if I don't get in, too, but I need direction, darn it! Anyway, hang in there - we'll all hear eventually, right? 🙄

There are plenty of us around who are still interviewing, though, so chin up. Still, I understand the frustration involved in not knowing where you're going to be living or what you'll be doing in the next few months!

As a Wisconsinite who was driving through our blizzards on bald tires up until a few weeks ago and who wears sneakers year round--

I think people just don't know how to drive/walk. 😉

HA, love it! So true, except my big winter boots are Merrells and my Forester is red - with turbo, baby! After being in SoCal for 6 years, I'm glad my AWD finally got to earn it's keep this winter.

Get a JEEP. I've lived in the NY snowbelt my whole life and my jeep (aka "The Badger") has gotten me out of some crazy ****.

No love lost between me and the 'burus. 😉

Not everyone can afford a Subaru AND OOS vet tuition. If I got in to Minnesota, I certainly wasn't going to get a new car! Nope, I would be bringing my (paid off!) Civic. Bahaha. Like, probably one of the worst things to drive just because it has about a foot of clearance.

Lunajet- Awesome! When my dad and I bought my Subaru, he *almost* let me get the turbo...and then decided that it wasn't "necessary"😡. I've never had an issue with mine, only a few instances when it started to fishtail, but nothing I couldn't correct.

Awaring- My sister in VA had a Jeep and got rid of it because it was awful in the snow and wasn't the kind of quality she was looking for in a car. However, my SO's parents have a Jeep and they swear by it. To each his own.

And TT, my sister is in AK with her civic and seems to be doing fine, but she does have some pretty good snow tires and it's a manual.

Still no word from either of my schools. this is making me alternately too nauseous to eat and shove chocolate in my mouth.
Work was *****ic today. I'm still too tired to think straight, our in-house BW machine has a lamp out and can't run certain chemistries, and as an EXTRA bonus we had a cat die suddenly today. While I was drawing blood on it. 😱 Did you know it's really hard to draw blood on a cat that's dead? Cause it is.

I'm going to go cry for the rest of the evening. Thanks.

After an awesome weekend... I am now getting sick. I have been coughing and cold and achy all day. I will force myself to my riding lesson tomorrow because I haven't been on Coquette (or any other horse) for 3 weeks, but I suspect it will be with a head full of goo.

Damn immune system, flunking out on me now that it's break!

I've got a 13 year old Toyota Corolla. Bare bones base model standard shift. With studded winter tires, it's fine in most winter conditions (barring those where the police are advising everyone off the road, regardless of four wheel drive). All wheel drive is nice, but by no means a necessity.
 
I think the reason I love my Jeep is much is road clearance. I drive a Cherokee and it is able to plow through stuff that tiny cars can't come close to. I also live down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere and storms usually drop 2+ feet of snow overnight and the town never likes to plow.


My rant for the day:

I was accepted to Dublin but it seems almost impossible to get my boyfriend of 4+ years to be able to move with me. Ireland is not very willing to give out work cards and does not like to make life easy. I know I posted a thread about this, but it is all I can think about! My joy of acceptance and my desire to live abroad is being squished by this awful feeling that recognizing my dream may mean losing the one I love. We had such a perfect picture of us living together while I went to vet school and unless I get accepted last minute in the US 🙂xf🙂 this will not happen.

And if it DOES happen it will most likely be a call from the wait-list (so after April 15th) and I will lose my $2,700 deposit to Dublin. Such a giant deposit! Garlkjdlkajlakhfkjh!(*&(*&*&#%$&@(!)
 
OMG You guys seriously? Big trucks? Puh-leeease. I am currently in the midst of my 4th winter driving my 99 Ford Mustang. It is a pain in the azz to drive through the snow but it has turned me into one hell of a driver. Actually, just today I was driving back to Columbus from a weekend at home. Hit an icy patch on the highway and went fish-tailing all over the road. Very nearly spun out and I'm not sure how I managed not to get hit by a semi but I straightened her out after some major sliding and lurching and went along on my merry way =)
 
I have a Dodge Neon, for Pete's sake, and I've never had a problem with it in the five Indiana winters that I've owned it. It's so light that it just kind of drives over the top of the snow, haha. Or that's what I like to think anyway. I've never gotten it stuck anywhere or had any problems, so it works for me!
 
I really love this forum and the people I've been fortunate enough to meet. But, due to personal choice (and a surplus of "hating"-ness) I'm out. It's been real, ya'll. You'll see me on Tufts and that's prolly it.

Best wishes - it's been real. (I'll still do PM, but I'm not posting anymore. I am quite shy and to post on here has been exhilarating but, all things must come to an end). My weekend was bad enough and I really don't need complete strangers telling me to censor what I post on a public forum.

@PSIL: Yet somehow I managed to avoid the ER. 😉 If I can make it over unplowed county highways on my bald tires and in a car named after a city in Florida, all them darned coasties can drive their nice cars in some slush. /grumpy Wisconsin whining.

Now for my real rant: I want to buy jeggings. Gasp.
 
This is going on my third week being in pain. I'm very frustrated. Is health care in the states THIS SLOW?

It's my break... I have to devote it to working on my thesis. The pain gets worse when I sit for long periods of time. I just want to slam my head into the desk after about an hour of being at school and just go home.

Doctor ordered tests two weeks ago. I had to bribe someone to drive me to the next town because the city hospital (which is within walking distance from me) won't do the tests unless I had an appointment.

Then I waited for my test results. They never called. So I stopped into the clinic. They had my test results and didn't call me because all of my tests were normal.

Now I'm waiting for them to refer me to a specialist. Does it really take 5+ days to pick up the phone and tell them that I need to see them?

The boyfriend took me bowling on Sunday. I haven't bowled since the alley closed in May. I figured it would be good for my pain... hahahahaha... my left buttcheek was sooo sore that I limped BADLY all yesterday. It was a struggle to get up out of a chair. *sigh*

That's another rant right there. I've been bowling for 11 years and had to give it up because the owner of the mall it was in decided not to renovated it. So they tore it down, and closed the other alley in the next town over. I miss it sooo much 🙁
 
Sick of winter. So sick of winter. We had 50 degree weather the other day and now it's back to inches of snow. *sigh* Now I understand the winter blues....

I don't know what to do about the car situation myself. I have a 2WD stick shift F150. Everything thinks it must be so awesome in the snow because it's a TRUCK but..half of the damn thing is air. I got stuck on some ice in my driveway last winter and to be honest, while I love my truck, I don't feel safe driving in snow/ice with it. What I'm going to do about this is TBD, contingent on an acceptance, anyway!

I had a few friends in college with trucks. They would put cinder blocks or sand bags or something equally sized/heavy in the bed. It seemed to help a lot with keeping the back from sliding around. This is in NJ, so we got a decent amount of snow/ice sometimes...whether this will work in say theoretical land-of-horrific-winter, I can't say.
 
The biggest problem (Laitman and TT) are that I can't really lift all that much on my own. My dad used to use old piles of slate but it's difficult to lift sandbags or cinder blocks on my own, not to mention over waist height since the bed of the truck is fairly high. I usually just shovel extra snow in there but it still feels scary. We'll see though! I'd hate to have to trade it 🙁

Rant:
I hate gas stations at lunch hour. If my gas light hadn't switched on, I wouldn't have gone at that time, but I get overly-anxious when my gas light goes on, so I went anyway.

The lady in front of me did not know how to drive. It's really not that hard to squeeze past a sedan with another sedan. But she obviously didn't know where her right side was, because she had like three feet and was inching along RIGHT NEXT to the car she was trying to squeeze by. And she hit her brakes weird/too hard a bunch of times or something, because her car kept jerking whenever the brake lights went on. Then when she finally got to the pump, her car was all sorts of crooked, with the back part far away from the pump. She finished at the same time I did... and then went inside for something, while there was a line behind both of us. So I just went past her car... only to find another car blocking my way out! And I didn't even want to go that way! Another person in a car IN THE STREET had to get the lady driving that car to pull forward so I could weave around her and the other car. And around the corner, on the other side of the gas station, there was yet another car in an awkward place! What is this, people?! Do you not know how to stay on YOUR side of the road, where you very conveniently won't block other people? Really now!

My conclusion: Gas stations are a clusterf*ck. Things like that are why I usually go in the middle of the night.

I don't care what people say - those jean-like-things are awesome! (I wouldn't wear them of course, but I'm glad others do)

I HATE HATE HATE when people wear skinny jeans with ballet flats or flip flops. Especially when the jeans dont fit right and are bunched around their ankles. Even worse-- saw someone wearing skinny jeans with dansko-like clogs. No no no no no no
I wear skinny jeans in the fall/winter, with boots, and that's it lol. I hate the way the ankles look otherwise.

And I really hope that whoever invented jeggings suffers greatly for this travesty.

Don't do it, lol, they're horridly uncomfortable. I'm all for straight legs in the winter and with sperry shoes, but seriously try levi's straight legs. Sooooo much more comfortable!

I am 5'3", so all pants are too long for me... I wear skinny jeans on the daily and they are always bunched unless I cuff them. I feel like I look like a little hooligan if I cuff them, though.

I would never wear danskos with them. Or actually... danskos ever. I know. I am totally about to get flamed here.:scared:

But that college humor video was hilarious. I need to get a W-neck to go with my jeggings...

My skinny jeans are from Express- short length is perfect for me, and I'm the same height as you 😛
I've had good luck with Gap jeans, and for cheaper ones, Kohls.

And I love my Danskos to death. They're so comfy. But with skinny jeans? No way. Too ugly.

And I liked this line the best: "Can I wear this condom? Not without the pants!"

How pricey are the express ones? My only gap ones I got on sale (coincidentally they are BOOTCUT! the horror...)
