hey you guys are right... that's pretty bad that I overlooked that. I checked the original article and it left out the other percentages too. So I wonder what the rest of the incoming class put. Maybe LA and SA? That would make more sense.

Guess I should make sure I have all the facts before I rant about something...
 
I don't usually like ranting about things, but I think day 3 of hell week just shoved me off the mortal coil 😛. Generally, I feel pretty good about the PBL process, but sometimes not knowing what I need to know feels a little ... disheartening. I ended up spending weekends trying to catch up on information I didn't think to study or research during the week, which means I couldn't review old cases for exams. ...I also blame watching too much TV.

Still, I was really surprised when, come exam day 1, I found out that I was able to hit every major point in the exam 🙂. There goes the rave part of my post.

The rant part goes to the fact that, although I DID cover all the info, 8 straight weeks of new cases (and 5 different species) and new information and then a midterm for 5 consecutive days on week 9, without a break to review the past sessions kinda brings cramming to a whole new level. But that's just because I didn't learn how to study efficiently enough 🙁. The exam was definitely fair. I just didn't have time to go over it to know it at the level they expected.

On a side note, one of my classmates posted this on FB, which made me cry and smile a bit:
"... for anyone who thinks that veterinarians aren't as respectable as human docs, I just had to do a 4 hour practical exam on 5 different species...ask your physician where the kidneys are on an iguana!"

Otherwise, life is fine. I'm currently reviewing metabolic bone disease in an iguana 🙂, then off to bovine mastitis.

possums are dirty creatures and taking them in exposes everyone in the clinic to whatever they carry (including possibly rabies here in the US). If I owned a practice, I would have directed the lady to a local wildlife rehab, and would have been pissed if a tech took one in while I was not there (although this would be known well ahead of time). This probably does not help you, but things to think of if(when?) you come back to practice in the US (the land of sue happy people).

This is me jumping back a bit, but I really hate when people harangue at the poor opossums. They're actually one of, if not the least, likely animal in the US to be a rabies vector - people aren't really sure why (besides them being marsupials,) but it takes a lot more rabies exposure to infect them than most animals. And captive ones are generally really clean and friendly, with cute little wet noses and lots of teeth.

They're just seen as ugly and have rat tails, so nobody likes the poor things.

Three letters. EPM. If a horse ingests the fecal matter of an opossum that is carrying EPM, he could be in a lot of trouble. I won't risk it by having an opossum anywhere near my horses.
 
I can't stop thinking about an answer I put on my Ohio supp that I regret like nothing I've ever regretted before. It's not entirely wrong, but it's not entirely right either, and I think it makes me sound like I am trying to talk about something that I don't understand, when I really do understand it. I just realize now that I shouldn't have made the comparison I did or at least should have clarified my statements.

Anyone know if they give you a chance to redeem yourself during an interview if you made this kind of mistake on the supplemental (if it doesn't completely kill me and I get an interview in the first place)?

From what I have heard, their body temperature is too low for rabies. I like them and liked taking care of them when I volunteered at a wildlife rehab clinic. The babies are adorable - especially the little ones smaller than your hand that try to hiss and act tough. 🙂

This was in the context of bringing one into a vet clinic, though. I definitely understand horse people not wanting them around the stable and other reasonable things, but I know people who will swerve to hit them in the road because they think they're stupid, dirty vermin. 👎

So maybe I'm missing something here, but aren't U.S./European opossums a totally different species than Australian/New Zealand possums?

Completely different, but I'm pretty sure the original post was talking about american opossums. Australian possums are a good chunk cuter, haha.
 
Had to evac at work because of a big gas leak, still don't know what is going on over there and anxious to know what happened! It was really scary having to get all of our boarders out, I have one of the cats hiding under my bed right now. Never been through an evacuation situation before, it was really intense and none of us quite knew what to do. By the time we had all the animals out in the parking lot, all the other businesses in the complex were long gone! Luckily we didn't have any critical patients or surgeries at the time, that would have been disaster. I'll find out tomorrow what the situation is, I really hope everything is okay there. 😱
 
My car's battery died today. Not just died, it decided it was done, kaput, unable to hold a charge anymore. My roommate came to my rescue, jumped it for me, and then I started driving... got out of the parking lot and on to the street only to see the battery light come on.. So it was off to autozone while I vented on the phone about how I hated everything. Biochem exam tomorrow and it was already 5:30 ! BAH!

90 bucks and a lot of talking and almost crying to the nice supervisor man later, my car has a new battery and he informed me my alternator is probably on its last legs because its output isn't where it should be. I thought I just got out of being broke from applying to vet school... apparently my diet is supposed to consist of really cheap food for the rest of my immediate future. Oh well.

Stupid cars.
 
Gen chem II first exam grades are still not posted. We took the test on Wednesday! I know I sound ridiculous but orgo exams were always up like, that night or the next. Sheesh. Doesn't help that I know I didn't do well - I just want to know how well I did compared to everyone else :scared: I NEED a B in that dumb class!
 
My plan today was to get all of my snails measured for my honours project. Well, I soon realized that it couldn't be done. My dissecting scope didn't have a little measuring thingy in it (ha, I'm so technical), and my supervisor left me the keys to everywhere except the room with the dissecting scopes. Since I couldn't measure my snails, I figured I would start preserving the ones I needed to preserve. I opened up the box of glass vials and... 3 left. And I'm out of spring water.

So I basically made a trip to the university for nothing.

And because it's stupid thanksgiving weekend, I now have to wait until Tuesday to finish up with these darn snails.

At least I have plenty of time to work on my proposal :barf:

I sent my almost done proposal to my email and spent an hour editing it yesterday on the lab computer... and I lost it. I swore I saved it when I closed it but I guess I didn't. Ah well!

Its Columbus day weekend. 🙂 I wish it were Thanksgiving instead.
Esp because I don't get C-bus day off.

I found when doing research for various projects wasn't possible, writing was. It seems like you have your proposal to work on. Materials and methods and the introduction are also a good sections to start early.
 
For cryin' out loud, why must we wait until school is in session to start road construction projects that have been desperately needed for YEARS!

Fort Collins had all summer to fix the problems on Prospect Road and to repave those gawdawful railroad tracks on Lake Street, but do they work on those problems outside of the regular schoolyear? NO, they decide to work on the Harmony/College intersection instead, which is nowhere near the campus. They wait until everyone is commuting to campus every day to start work on the 2 projects right by the school.

Okay, so my rant is a little late. They finally completed the railroad track repaving...and it's about friggin' time because driving over those tracks made my teeth chatter like those goofy wind-up toys from the 70's. And b/c they chose to do it during the schoolyear, it was a HUGE disruption in traffic patterns.

But they're STILL working on Prospect Road, which is still backing up traffic that's trying to get to the parking garage.

ALL SUMMER, people. You had ALL SUMMER to get these jobs done.

I just finished filling out Western's supplemental application, and before I had time to hit print it reverted back to blank! :bang:
so ridiculous that they have my transcripts, and a list of all my courses from vmcas, and yet I still have to enter all of these courses again in another format. once I retype all of this, I'll be answering the 10 supplemental questions, and my head might actually explode before I finish

Omg, they're doing the same thing here! They have the highway torn up on either side of the university. They started this in SEPTEMBER, right as school is starting up. The bus, which already only goes to the university once an hour, has been anywhere from 10 minutes late to 55 minutes late.

I went to the mall on Friday to get a haircut. The bus was supposed to arrive at 5:35. At 5:45, the bus arrives that's headed in the opposite direction. I ask if the bus was going the other way and the driver said "That bus is going to be late due to construction." and shut the door in my face. The bus ended up coming at around 6:30. You'd think they'd radio ahead and tell me that it was going to be ALMOST AN HOUR LATE. They've done that with breakdowns.

They don't stop construction during rush hour! They had four lanes of traffic down to two and it was a disaster.

I go to school from 8-5:15... the last thing I want to be doing after a long day is standing out in the freezing cold waiting for a bus. If I waited inside... well, I risk not getting a seat some days because so many people are also trying to get home the same time I am.

What the heeeckkkkk. Mom got mad at me last night and I am confined to my room (when they're home) until..hell freezes over, I guess. Great. With no car. Faaaaaaaaaantastic. This whole saving money thing? Not very bueno.

AGH. Thank heavens I don't have any tests coming up. Grrrrrr. Least I'm "priviledged" and can come down to get food. ...if she feels like it. :scared: 😡 :bang::annoyed:
 
You know what? Just because you found a couple of mice with prolapses and one hanging from the top of the cage (?!) DOES NOT MEAN that I am a sloppy tech that failed to notice these things. Is it possible I missed something (other than a mouse hanging from the cage...wtf)? Yes. If I had noticed anything amiss, I would have written up a health report. I most definitely didn't hang your mouse from the caging. I looked at the cages for a couple seconds each in the middle of the day. NINETEEN HOURS passed between the time that I looked at the mice and you presumably found these things. Is it so freaking far-fetched to think that perhaps these things occured AFTER I looked at the cages? So many investigators assume that if something went wrong (flooded box, dead mouse, whatever) that it's YOUR fault for not catching it, nevermind the fact that 24hrs passes between each check. You want 24hr surveillance on your freaking mice? BUY A WEBCAM.

Hi Red-

I feel your pain - daily. Ah, the joys of research... Remember, it's never their fault, nor the fault of chance, that things go wrong. Thus, it must be the fault of animal services. It's simply amazing what we get blamed for...

Once upon a time, I had a K9 suffering from what I believed to be kidney failure. We later found out that yes, it was the case; and it was most likely from a mistake made during an experimental urinary procedure. The poor beast was a mess. Oh yes, I should add this was a Sunday. Anyway, I paged the researchers, the vet-on-call, the vet-on-call, again, and the researchers, again, but everyone shrugged it off. My only instructions were 'Well, you probably just can't get the vein on your own. But, if you REALLY think he's dehydrated, then give him some fluids.' By the morning, the animal needed to be euthanized. 🙁 And guess who got the blame? Yep - me. Why? Because I wasn't 'explicit' enough when I phoned. Apparently, my 'I think the dog is tanking... He's lethargic, vomiting, dehydrated, I can't express his bladder and I can't get a vein to run an istat. And I'm worried because I think that his kidneys might be failing!' and 'Um, he seems to be getting worse, what should I do for him??' apparently wasn't explicit enough for any of these people. My ass. It was that nobody could be bothered with leaving their precious weekend.

So, next time one of their mice decides to hang themselves, just try to remember that the little beast may have had a good reason to do so. :meanie:

I hate human anatomy and physiology. I love the material, but I hate the format of the class.

Each lecture, she provides an outline of what we are going to cover for the class. The first few topics have "Will cover in lab!" written next to it. We will see these topics in lab anywhere from 1-4 weeks later.

Last week for example, we started bones. The general information on bones won't be provided to us for another couple of weeks. She asks the class if we have covered bones before in another course or in high school. Nobody raises their hand. "Oh, that's unfortunate. Well, I'm going to give you a quick review. You'll go into more detail in the lab!" and she's flying through the cells that make up the bones and the structure of a typical long bone and I'm like "Buh?" and then she goes into bone repair and now I'm completely lost.

Is it seriously THAT HARD to make the lectures line up with the labs?

What also makes me upset is that we have a 3 hour anatomy lab per week. We're done in ~1 hour. I stay and work on my workbook because I'm a keener, but most people leave after the lab instructor is done lecturing because all there is for us to do after that is look at some slides that won't be on our lab exam. Why can't we do two topics in lab each week instead of one?

This is a year long course... and I'm already frusterated with how poorly organized it is.

In all of my biology classes, the lab has been on par with the lecture or slightly ahead. This is the first time I've had a lab that is soo far behind. I think I like it the other way around! I even enjoy labs that seem to have NOTHING to do with the lecture more than this class (intro bio comes to mind... learned about cell structure the first few weeks, but did beetle experiments in lab...)
 
My horse tried to kill us both (again) this weekend by pretending NOT TO HEAR ME and resulting in dragging down an entire oxer with his back legs. Resulting in him going lame in the middle of our equitation class. And the last horse show of the season is this weekend. Which is making me insane, because I am dogsitting 4 dogs in two separate homes and one person's flight is delayed so I have ALL of them tonight, as well as the entire weekend. Not to mention I work this weekend on top of the regular full week. And I have to try to still get out and ride my horse, pending soundness.

On top of my schedule frying my brain, my endocrinology class is frying my brain. I love the material, but my professor's sense of organization is skewed and trying to put it all together in a way that makes sense so I can study is making my head hurt. My online animal nutrition class is organized even more horrendously, but thankfully it is online and I can ignore it until I get through this week.

Basically I just feel like my brain is going to melt and run out my ears, and I have no clean clothes, no food, and no time to fix either of those. I need a smilie that is catatonic and drooling.

My rant....i'm sick AGAIN and really need to study but all i want to do is sleep. This is what I get for being holed up, working from home for the past 6 years and not being around many cooties... they are everywhere, everywhere I say. :scared:

It's true. I guess it's just easier to assume that animal care staff are highschool drop outs that don't know jack about anything. I don't want the research to fail but I don't want any of the animals to suffer even moreso. The ironic part is, these are the people that defend the normal weekday worker who (besides depending on me and my coworkers to dump/wash/bed/check/etc - what does he do during the full eight hour day he's supposed to be there?!) frequently misses deformities, fight wounds, etcetcetc. I mean really, it isn't like I saw it and left it there. I'm sure the moral of the story is to be more thorough during my checks and I will, but seriously, it isn't like its a straight certainty that it's my fault. And I don't want it to be my fault because I'd feel awful, so I'm trying not to let it bother me but urgh.

So we got our gen chem II tests back finally. I got a 51/100 :scared: Highest score in the class was a 77 and average is yet to be determined (professor was out and TA taught lecture, so I'm guessing we'll find out tomorrow when professor is back) but that doesn't make me feel much better. I ended up with a B in orgo II scoring in the 50s (more like mid to upper, though) so I'm not going to break down into tears just yet. I'm kicking myself for bombing the first quiz but we have one or two more quizzes, one more test and online homework problems (which we can do until correct) so I'm just going to have to work extra hard. It's weird, because on my test I either got like, full credit/a lot of credit on certain parts and then like, zero credit on others. Makes it easy to focus my study efforts for the final though.

It's been a real rant-worthy couple of days..👎

Vessels and nerves... YUCK!! Don't even get me started on the lumbosacral plexus!!

We have our first anatomy practical in the morning... The whole dog (no head). And after our lovely written exam this morning (hello peripheral nervous system) and our histology practical on Friday (written on Monday) all I can say is Why Penn?! Why?!?

A lot of people didn't feel it. It wasn't *that* bad... but it was weird as hell. And a bit disconcerting. The ground is supposed to say put. And I was on the 3rd floor of a very old building. :d
 
Anatomy professor last week: “You do not need to know the origins and insertions of the epaxial and hypaxial muscles. You just need to be able to identify them in lab.”

Questions 1 through 5 on the anatomy test today: This muscle originates on blah and inserts on blah blah. 😡 WTF ?!?!? Is it really that hard to test us on the stuff you actually taught? So glad we can challenge questions we think are unfair; hope we get some points back….

And a test related rant towards my classmates. Why do the first people walking into the auditorium to take a test insist on sitting on the end of the row? Is it just me? I would think it makes more sense to go towards the middle of the row. (except for the left side of the auditorium with the desks for left-handed people) If you went towards the middle, I would not have to climb over you to get to an empty seat and interrupt your writing. If you get in there first and sit on the end, you are not allowed to get annoyed when people crawl over you.

I strongly advise you to stay on top of learning this stuff now as it comes up, don't wait like I did. Unlike the muscles which each have their own discernible shape and character... the arteries and their branches really start to seem all the same. By the end, I couldn't keep track of any but the biggest, most obvious ones.
 
I like how the Rant thread has over 1,000 posts and the Rave thread has 350ish, yet both were created around the same time (a weeks difference over the span of 5 months).

Indicative of the data set or life in general?
 
I think everyone likes to complain. 🙂

Also, this section definitely spawns a lot more sympathy, so the "Oh no, that sucks, I'm so sorry" posts take up a potion of the total.

My friend and I went to a movie recently. She has to sit in the last row on the end because she gets motion sickness. Instead of walking to the other side of the theatre and going up the stairs opposite of us, EIGHT PEOPLE came up the stairs closest to us and stuck their butts in our faces as they tried to get by. Then FOUR people chose to squeeze by us again in the middle of the film, even though they had to squeeze by less people to get to the other stairs... but hey, the stairs we were by is closest to the exit, so that's gotta be the only way out!

Next time, my friend and I are sitting on the other side of the theatre 😛 We would have moved, but someone had already stolen the end seats on the other side of the theatre.

I hate it when women wear high heels to tests. It's sooo distracting when they walk out early: click click Click CLICK CLICK CLICK Click click click click.

I rant about some pretty superficial things... maybe I should start raving about superficial things... my boyfriend's mom sent me home with two types of of chocolate chip cookies and SKOR BAR SQUARES. Win. And I finally found out where my BB pin is!
