I need a new desk lamp that doesn't shine in my eyes and give me a headache. Anyone have any suggestions?

Currently I'm contemplating blinders to keep this dang light out of my eyes!

I have a lamp with a shade. Those bendy-clicky lamps are annoying.

A shade! That's brilliant! 😀

Mine is like an architect one on a long arm that you can fold and stuff, it sucks!

Ugh. So I'm in a contemporary issues class called "Issues Concerning The Use Of Animals By Humans." We have different guest speakers come in to talk to us about both sides of animal issues, and today's speaker was from Mercy For Animals, which is an animal rights group based out of Columbus. The speaker told us to try and keep an open mind, and honest to goodness I did.

But it didn't last long. She lost me very early on in the presentation, when she had a picture of a cow on the screen. This cow had a very large, very obviously full udder, and the speaker repeatedly referred to HER as a "he." That was the end of it for me.

If you're going to tell me to listen to you and keep an open mind and try to learn something from you, at least give me the same courtesy. It just clearly showed that she had no idea whatsoever about agriculture, and I had so much I could have said. The rest of the class took care of it though, they all had plenty to say.

Needless to say, it was a very uncomfortable class, and I'm glad it's over.

Well done on not dissolving into fits of laughter. I think I would have.

I am spending way too much time on the other side of vet medicine. Bailey got a diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy a week ago. She's on Vetmedin and furosemide and a third drug was added in today to treat the chronic tachycardia. She has vastly improved over last week when we thought we might lose her, but it's still rough to know she's not well.

My truck has decided that winter isn't getting here fast enough, so it's going to overheat and break down. Now I get to figure out how to get over the river and go to class in twelve hours.

That's a bummer, but at least you don't have to go through the woods too.

I could give you the one I have but the light bulb is burnt out...and it takes some type of really fancy light bulb that I have just not felt like going to find and replace. (At least it won'd be shining in your eyes and giving you a headache. 😛)

Rant: Yesterday we had one of the most awfully behaved dogs I have seen in a while. This dog was snapping, snarling, lunging and alligator rolling. It broke through four of our leashes. We could not even pet the dog without it trying to bite. We finally got it sedated and out for its discounted spay (yes we spayed this dog for only $70 through the county, after spending fifteen minutes trying to simply get a PA into it). Luckily, no one got bit; I got close but the dogs teeth just grazed my finger. 😡

And to top it off; the owners of this dog had been breeding her!!! 😱
Now there is a smart idea: Breed the insanely aggressive mutt. GREAT IDEA!!

And people tell us we charge too much for stuff; I think we should have an aggressive animal fee. If we can't touch your dog without getting our fingers ripped off then you should have to pay x amount more.

Thank you! Your light would definitely not shine in my eyes. Actually after class today I went to a fancy consignment store and bought a nice lamp, with a shade (thank you TT for that idea). My eyes are happy now.

Funny about those vicious dogs, they are usually the ones you remember most years down the road. Have you ever tried pulling a leash through the hinged area of an open door and squeezing the dog against the wall so it can't turn to bite? That's my favorite, though I've only seen it done once.

Glad you have a lamp that does not bother your eyes and actually works. 😀

Yes that is what we ended up doing. I have seen it done before, but the doctor "does not like that" and it is only used as "a last resort." I figured after effing around with this dog for ten minutes without success. Heavy blankets over the dog, people sitting on the dog, thick gloves, someone holding the leashes forward, somebody else sit on top and third person poke, etc, etc and every other possible restraint method we could try that it would be time for the "last resort" but apparently the doctor decided that SHE needed to try. Yeah after another five minutes the only successful things we had done was express anal glands and receive a stool sample so she FINALLY let us use the door method. Apparently she does not like that because she has seen a dog's eyes pop out from that method (first time I had ever heard of that happening), but I would have thought the door would have been better than stressing the dog out for another five minutes and ultimately having the dog bite through its own gums and making a big bloody mess but apparently not. :meanie:

Ah yes, the door trick.

👍 I love that trick.

Excuse me, ma'am, but why does that bull have 4 penises? 😕

Yup, we have to do this periodically on dogs we otherwise can't touch. Like, lunge-and-rip-off-bits dogs that the OWNER can't control. Obviously it's a last resort, but I think it's better to go to it sooner and get the poor dog sedated than to d*ck around for 15 minutes getting everyone involved stressed out.

Today's rant: Our receptionist. That is all.

I have - you'll be surprised what it DOESNT take to make some dogs eyes pop out.

I've seen dogs eyes pop out because they've been straining on the leash. I've seen dogs eyes pop out because they were scruffed. Pretty much anytime a dog is struggling, their eyes might pop out. Lol.

That said, I've only ever seen that kind of thing in "at risk" breeds - chihuahuas, pugs, etc. I mean, their eyes are already half out... its like cheating. I also work with an opthamologist - so we see more of these dogs than usual. Its actually against the rules for us to scruff dogs for her, or make them struggle in any way which might put too much tension on the face skin.

RANT:
I'm so tired. And I'm working all weekend. And our parasitology prac exam is in two weeks... and i havent studied parasitology all semester...

When the REALLY bad animals came in at the SA clinic I was at, we did charge for "restraint" which we normally didn't charge for even risky animals, and which was separate from the charge for sedation. Too bad there wasn't a discount for the lab that would just sit to have his blood taken or the cats that didn't care that you were giving them a vaccine!

I completely and totally understand your frustration. That class made that semester a totally miserable hell. HANG IN THERE! You can get through it!

I've had problems with my knees for about 7 years now. It's usually just an overuse issue and I can take some Tramadol for a few days and be good to go. However, since Tuesday/Wenesday I've had a very different pain in my left knee. It's a constant ache with some pretty intense pain when I stand up from a squat or flex my knee and it feels like something is popping or moving or something. Anyway, the Tramadol isn't touching this one. I've seen 4 different doctors about my knee and none of them have ever done any imaging. This time I'm going to insist on it. I'm wondering if I tore my meniscus.

I'm way too young for this.

One of my guyfriends is 21, has had four knee surgeries, and just recently separated the cartilage and tore his ACL. AGAIN. Not counting everything else he's done to it...

I have had the same issues with my knees since I was 14. When I straighten my knee it makes an awful popping and clicking sound. I must be really used to it because I get asked all the time if that hurts but it doesn't. Sometimes I can't straighten my knee all the way. I just take Aleve for the days my knee is really bothering me. I did recently find out that I have a misaligned patella (kind of similar to a luxating patella, but mine is lateral instead of medial); so my patella grinds against my femur and the clicking sound I hear is the patella popping in and out of the groove. It has definitely gotten much worse over this summer and I am hoping to have surgery to fix it come January/February. Also, the misaligned patella did not show up on an x-ray; they found it on a MRI.

Good Luck, I hope they find out what is wrong with yours! Knee pain sucks!

I know how you feel (about the doctors never doing anything)... In April 2008 I tore my ACL during training exercises and had surgery to repair it... well since then I've had constant pain, swelling, and locking up of my knee and every time I would go to the doctor they would just give me Naproxen and send me on my way like I was some sort of hypochondriac. So, now I'm a month from getting discharged from the military and trying to get all my physical exam stuff done and they finally sent me for an MRI last week and apparently my ACL graft failed and now I have torn up menisci and who knows what else so now I'm waiting on a referral to see an orthopedic surgeon. It's so frustrating that no one has listened to me for the past two and a half years when I kept telling them something was wrong and I went through the surgery and lost hamstring tendons for nothing! I am just hoping that I can get all of this medical stuff cleared up ASAP so that I can get out of the service as scheduled. I'll deal with surgery and stuff later. I just want to go to school and ride horses!

It stinks to be young and feel your body wanting to fall apart on you! Good luck with getting this resolved 🙂

My brother is a stand-up comic. He came to Knoxville for an amateur comedy contest and I had a few friends come along with me to support him. He's really upset now because he didn't get votes outside the group I brought. I really don't think it is because he's not funny (there were really only 4 people that made me laugh), but he got put last after a long night and the two guys before him made everyone feel so awkward that nobody was laughing. They really killed the crowd. The top guy was one that brought like 20 people with him and was from the area.

I'm just upset because there were obviously 3-5 comics that all knew each other and voted for each other. The same guys were all from the area and brought tons of people with them. And now my brother feels like he needs to give it all up. And he's actually a pretty funny guy.

Frustrated about bureaucratic stuff at work. You'd think it wouldn't happen at a small private clinic. Not gonna go into details, but the higher up people are always right, no matter what, and there's nothing I can do or say about it. Roar. I keep on seeing what I'm going to try really, really hard not to do when I'm a vet.

I, too, have worked with veterinarians who think they are always right. It's very frustrating. However, the vet that I work with the most is awesome and is very down to earth. She is my role model and idol and I hope to be just as awesome as her one day.

I alternate with this vet. Most of the time, I really respect her and she's definitely my favorite vet at the clinic, the one I work best with and learn the most from and look up to most, but sometimes she seems to forget what it's like to be down in our position - she was here not too long ago. The combination of vets + manager as being so superior to all the rest of the staff is just plain blech. 😡

Unfortunately, I have found that in 3 out of the 4 small animal clinics that I worked in the office manager is ALWAYS right. It is like the vets wear blinders and they only see what the office manager sees; whether or not it is true. I have seen office managers and supervisors make BIG mistakes and they either do not get talked to or get nothing more than a slap on the hand. I have had to pick up slack that office managers have failed in doing. I have gotten in trouble for not only picking up that slack but also not following through and making sure another technician did something that the office manager FORGOT to do. I basically told that office manager that it was HER problem and SHE forgot about it; not the other technician's problem. She then told me that she was trying to teach that tech how to do those kinds of things; I explained to her that I taught the tech what it was she wanted her to do, walked her through the process and then just put the information in the computer (because the tech was busy with something else), but that wasn't good enough for the manager; even though the tech got taught what it was the manager wanted to be taught to her. It gets really frustrating. I have also learned that most of the people in the office manager/supervisor position (who I have worked with) have kissed ass to get there. They are complete suck-ups to the vets.

The one clinic I worked in where this was not an issue was in a small town with two older veterinarians who were not about meeting their "quota" for the month. I have been yelled at by vets in other clinics for not talking about heartworm disease to a client with severely ill pets and making sure they don't want to put their dog on heartworm preventative. I then tell the vet, "No. The person with the 17 year old poodle in chronic renal failure is NOT interested in heartworm prevention today, but thanks for asking." <---- This is what happens when they have a "goal" to meet each month. I get so sick of seeing our "monthly goals" and we need to make "x" amount for the next "x" days to make this goal. I understand that vets are doing this as a career (to make an income and I completely agree that most of the time we are really reasonable about prices) but there becomes a point where getting so involved in "goals" is ridiculous and completely blinds the vets into $$ instead of helping the pet (offering HWP to an owner with a deathly ill animal is ridiculous). Ok...I am done now...stepping off my soapbox.

Is there a youtube link or audio clip? Might kill some anonymity though...

Frustrated about pretty much everything right now. Grandfather is in the hospital, boyfriend of 4 years pretty much said he doesn't want to be in a relationship anymore, tests keep coming, and my knees have also decided to revolt against me. I'm just scratching off the days until Thanksgiving break, when I can get some good down time back at home. With my cat. 😳

So sorry, skittles. Hang in there. And, yes, nuthin beats kitty luvins!

🙁 that is horrible!! it is so hard to keep going when so many bad things keep happening. make a list of everything you accomplish and maybe it will make you feel better 🙂 when i felt like my world was crashing, i literally made a list of all accomplished things......just accomplished not necessarily "good" things lol but it reminds you that you SURVIVED! My friend told me something last night because a non-vet friend was like "it can only get better!" and my friend said "i feel like in vet school it never gets better, but you keep surviving"

I have but one word for today: GRRRRRRRRRRRR. 😡

And skittles, I'm sorry to hear about all your troubles. I hope things start to look brighter for you soon.

I have now had *four* of my coworkers' pets die this year while in my cage bank. This officially sucks.

If I call the police on youth who are setting off firecrackers in my neighborhood, is it likely they'll do anything?

I'm tired of having them SCARE the CRAP out of me when I'm walking home and I'm tired of them waking me up at night.

Last night, my friend and I were coming back from a coffee. We were walking by a church and a group was coming out of the church. Two firecrackers went off in the middle of the street while the people were trying to get to their cars. We saw the car that did it... it was parked in an abandoned lot across the street but my friend didn't seem to keen on me calling the police.

This happens almost every night in October and I'm tired of it.

Urgh I hear you. We had that going on in our neighborhood for a few weeks too - I didn't call the police, but a few people in my apartment complex did - and it was resolved.

To replace the firework noise, an arguing couple has moved into the apartment building next to mine (same level as me - the two buildings are really close), and they keep their windows open all the time (even when they're shouting at each other). So recently my nights have consisted of:

Guy: yo baby naw I didn' do nothin with Chrissy. You juz trippin cause I been down hangin with my homeboys...
Girl: *very high pitched* Nuh uh I been talkin' to Camile who heard from Jamie that you been all up in Chrissy's crib doin' thangs
Guy: Baby naw baby they liein. Whos ya gonna believe?

Direct quote. and on and on and on...somewhat entertaining at first, but seriously...
