Original weekend plan: Cram for physics thursday night, take physics exam friday, go to advising appointment friday so I can register for classes next semester, drive five hours to spend the weekend with a really good friend I haven't gotten a chance to see in awhile, drive back sunday evening.

Physics teacher moved the exam to monday :scared:

New Weekend plan: Go nowhere.

Also, why does my physics teacher think doing example problems = teaching? Every time she spend and entire lecture working example problems I'm like "Great. Thanks. Now I can do that problem or a problem exactly like it. I still don't get the CONCEPT, so I can't do any other problems using that concept because it still hasn't been explained to me in words, only math. And I don't get math. I get it when she uses words, and then numbers. Or I can at least pretend to get it, then figure out what the heck she said later.

Go into her office hours and ask her to explain it with words 🙂 ask questions, dont be shy!

ps-that really sucks about the change in exam schedule...but i think that would have been a miracle for me if i were in ur shoes lol

PHYSICS! UGH I just took a physics exam on 5 chps + 1 section from an addition chp we barely covered... exam is 3 questions and one of them was from that section. BAHHH. I studied my bum off, and of ALLLL the questions and formulas he could of asked.... 😡

And to Scarcelyheard and co. I FEEL THE EXACT SAME WAY! like i'm never good enough to be "first place" my whole life, i have a ZILLION runner-up trophies and B's all over my transcript.

I pray someone sees potential and lets me into vet school. PLEASE

I got pretty sick second year and something had to give... it happened to by physics... so my grade in it kind of sucks. I don't care if my vet schools doesn't look at it, but if I don't get accepted, I plan on re-taking it in community college. I enjoyed the course... once I got behind with the weekly reading quizzes and written assignments, I couldn't recover.

My professor's wife overheard him lecturing me in front of another student and she got on his back about it. He apologized to me yesterday 😛

I'm not giving up hope yet. Lots of people on this forum have lower 3.5 gpa and have gotten accepted!

My prof's wife teaches my anatomy course... I have a feeling I'll be posting about my midterm in the Rave Here thread. It was easy peasy: choose 2 out of 5 short answer questions (she gave us a list of 10 questions for review and 5 of them were on the exam)
choose 6 out of 10 fill-in-the-blanks
10 mix-and-match questions
40 multiple choice (I was on the fence about 4 of them and I narrowed all of them down to 2 choices... when a choice was wrong, it was obviously wrong)

Not even CLOSE!

These are the things physiology is made of. 😉

That's the thing! My professor is a biochemist and at the end of each "unit" before a test, he does an application lecture. First unit we talked about oxygen transport in the blood, stuff like that. This unit we talked about DNA denaturing and how entropy/enthalpy effects that. I LOVE when he does this, because its like Oh hey, this really DOES apply to the real world! I love when things click like that. But sitting in lecture while he rambles on and injects his political opinions and half-lame humor is just disheartening 🙁

Blargh! Physiology can just off itself.

Though interestingly, the class I hate the most is the one I do the best in, though for the life of me I don't know how.

Rant: two fire drills yesterday making me lose a total of two hours of studying time as well as preventing me from finishing my SOAP. Then a 'shooter' (clueless guy with a fake gun) on campus after that, making me lose an additional hour of studying.

The SEM lab coordinator just e-mailed me to inform me that the lab technician screwed up my pictures while he was developing them. I have to find time some morning to go retake my project photos. 😡 I don't have time for this! I need to start on the write up for the project! And what if he screws it up again? This is 30% of my grade. I hate having to leave these things to other people. (Note to my university: Maybe your next big purchase should be a new SEM. A computerized one. It's not fair that we have two shiny new TEM and the SEM is 30 years old).

And I have killer writer's block. I have an environmental ecology assignment on water chemistry and I have zero motivation. I'm almost done, and I just can't pull anything out of my head. 😴

I don't even know what SEM and TEM is 😕

I have a biochem midterm on Wednesday. My plan was to do some hardcore studying yesterday. I got 9 hours of sleep Friday night, got up early to collect snails for my thesis, and by 2, I was EXHAUSTED and just felt weird. I had a nap, corrected a paper for a friend, felt tired again and decided to lie down for another nap. My eyelids started twitching violently... so much for napping and so much for studying.

It's better this morning, but my forehead just wants to stay scrunched up. It feels weird.

I told my mom yesterday that I went to see a doctor about my toe. She told me to tell him that insulin-dependent diabetes runs on both sides of my family. My mom is pre-diabetic and her mom has problems with her blood sugar. MS also runs on both sides of my family. I'm genetically doomed!

I just started hanging out with a girl who was just diagnosed with MS and she has a good attitude about it. Even though I don't know what's up with me, it's kind of nice to laugh about it with someone else.

I just do not have time to deal with this right now 😛 Why can't my body start hating me AFTER my biochem midterm?

ps-that really sucks about the change in exam schedule...but i think that would have been a miracle for me if i were in ur shoes lol

See, it would have been a miracle except that when she gives the exam on Friday, we have extra time to take the exam because we're the last class to use that lecture hall on fridays. Since it took me almost all the extra time she gave us last time, I'm kinda nervous about this test tomorrow.

Evil website... won't let me register for statistics because it claims I haven't taken college algebra yet. Someone made an error somewhere in the system when inputting the courses I came to college with because it did this to me for Chem 1 too, and college algebra is the only prereq that I brought in that it does this with.

I need to get in to this course too... it's the only other thing that doesn't conflict with the other courses. Guess I get to deal with this after my physics test tomorrow.

This is sooooo not my weekend.

I'll trade someone their Ochem, biochem or gen chem for finishing my Masters thesis..... any takers??? 🙂 j/k

I am dying to see if Missouri Proposition B fails or not. I actually "defriended" someone on Facebook today because he said his vote for it will "save the puppies" (well, that and I realized I haven't even talked to him in like 6 years). Ugh... At least No is in the lead, but that could very well change with 3000 precincts left to report!

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go here:

Sorry to those of you I'm friends with on Facebook... I'm sure you have heard enough from me on this subject!

I didn't look at the link, but here's my $0.02:

There is an existing law in MO about puppymills/commercial breeders. Some of the guidelines in Prop B are more stringent than this law, and some are less (like the fact that dogs needed to be fed 2x/day in the old law and now it's only 1x/day). There is an existing law. It's not a matter of the practices of bad animal care being legal (they aren't), it's a lack of enforcement. So stop spending tens of thousands of dollars trying to pass a new law, and just figure out a way to enforce the old one. It's about 60-30 right now opposed, with 28% of counties reporting. Most likely it'll fail. I don't oppose Prop B because I'm anti-animal welfare (actually, quite the opposite, if you've read my posts on here 🙂 ), but because it's just another law without any method of enforcement that will end up costing lots of money for no benefit.

Yes, exactly.

It's about 60-30 right now opposed, with 28% of counties reporting. Most likely it'll fail.

Unfortunately, I can't just assume it's going to fail. It's ~60/40 yes/no, but votes from St. Louis, Kansas City, Jackson, Platte, and other counties in/around Kansas City and St. Louis haven't yet been reported. I hope it does, but we will see...

Precisely. I'm actually happy with the number of people where I am (rural town ~20,000, I say town because I'm from Kansas City) who have called the vet clinics asking why they have signs up front that say "vote no". We definitely make sure to stress this point.

My girlfriend and I are at very different ends of the political spectrum. Usually this doesn't cause a whole lot of friction except around election time. Always ends in some kind of intense fight and me in tears. Tonight was no different. I feel like crap.

And I have an exam in twelve hours that I've barely begun to study for. End my life, NOW.

Yep, Proposition B passed. Kansas City and St. Louis swung the yeses just over the margin with the final vote for it at 51.6%.

Was up all night with Ella who had bad diarrhea and some half-assed vomitting. Couldn't get comfortable on the bed, couldn't sleep and I couldn't sleep because I was keeping an ear on her making sure she wouldn't get up and vomit/poop in the other room. Bless her heart for telling me she needed to go out but still - wakling the dog at 4 and 6am in the freezing cold isn't my idea of a good time.

Talked to Dr. P at work who suggested some pepto and boiled egg/rice. Got a syringe from work and will get a little pepto down her throat when I get home. I think I'm going to run home real quick after my crops lecture and quiz to let her out. I'm resigned to finding a dirty carpet and dirty dog when I get home, after I spent all that time vacuuming and steam cleaning the carpets over the weekend. If she isn't better by tonight, I'll take her in to see Dr. A tomorrow. Poor pup.

Went to see my GCII professor to ask about dropping or sticking it out. He told me he'd never been in charge of GCII before, just orgo labs, so he didn't really know. Great. He did say he'd give people of an idea of their grades in lecture on Friday, though, so hopefully my 56% is a low-end C. I can work with that.

I hear you on this one. My guy and I never fight...like, never, at all. The ONLY thing we can get heated on, though, is political stuff, on which we just don't see eye-to-eye. He's a finance and money guy, and I'm the bleeding-heart liberal. We usually are pretty civil and can discuss and agree to disagree, but I just didn't want to hear it last night during our phone call. We didn't blatantly fight, but I was giving a lot of one-word answers and aggravated sighs because I was sick of the political bashing. Still love him even though he's a right-leaner, but I'll be glad when this month passes and the holidays roll around. 🙄

Don't worry, it's probably just a backwater way for the stepkids to learn about 'the birds and the bees.' I'm sure the puppies will get great homes. And the digs will be fixed promptly afterwards.

I am not happy with genetics right now. I am really good at this stuff, it's interesting, and I have an A in the class (class average is around a C). We have an online lab that makes NO SENSE. I have spoken to 6 different people, and no one gets it. I've been staring at it for two hours without any luck. 😡

Yay, that's nice to see.
Wait, this is the rant thread. Why is Prop B passing a bad thing?

Squibby--there are pros and cons of Prop B. I'll put them in list form the way I see it (we were having a discussion about it a few posts back). There are probably others, but these are most important to me.

Pros:
-People in the state care about animals, and they are willing to spend money to prevent abuse and neglect.
-Some requirements are more stringent in the new law (prop b).
-Good publicity

Cons:
-There is already a puppy mill law in MO. It's unenforced.
-There is no means of enforcement in the new law, just as there wasn't in the old one.
-$$$$$ for no benefit
-Some requirements are less in prop b (dogs need only be fed 1x/day as opposed to 2x/day--not that that's an awful thing, I only feed my dogs 1x/day, but it's less stringent than the old law)
-You are penalizing the good breeders, the ones who follow the regulations set forth by the old law
-Breeders are more likely to duck around licensure by the state because they don't want to deal with the regulations
-Crazy vet consultation requirements (the dog has a stomachache-->vet)
-Lots of dogs will end up in shelters, maybe euthanized, because breeders will want to get out of the business

Nyanko, it's basically a pedigree analysis combined with gene mapping. My issue is that I can't figure out how to link a probe with a dominant or recessive gene based on the pedigree.

Thanks for posting that, NStarz. I was busy studying for biochem 🙂

ETA: I don't really believe in limiting the number of breeding animals (proposition B limits them to 50, whereas they were unlimited before). I know that it can be difficult to maintain that large of a number, but what is the difference between 50 and 51? And what about the people who have more than that, but it is their source of income, and they put all of their time and energy into those dogs and were already providing for them? I'm just a little frustrated... I'm sure it'll work out (it has to at this point).

I do agree there were good things about prop B but I don't feel that passing it will change much except facilities that were already licensed, and it doesn't help that HSUS endorsed it.

Out of 159 students 150 failed the micro exam. There were 3 B's, 2 C's, 4'Ds, and 150 F's. Sometimes.... I just hate school. Best part, profs met to discuess what they are going to do about the exam, TA said right now they are planning on doing nothing. 😡

If you want me to try to maybe look at it and explain it a little better, you can drop me an email. PM me if you want my email address. I would love to look at something like this since I've been studying histo all day and that is much less interesting to me...

note: my graduate coursework and research is in Genetics and I have been a TA and tutor for the upper division course here at UCD. It's really my main interest and the reason I'm in vet school is to find hooks and contexts for genetic research in companion animal health, and to be able to do genetic consulting with breeders as a clinician as well.

Brought Ella to the vet today. He sent us home with tummy soothers and anti-diarrheal. We couldn't get a stool sample because all of her poop has been liquid anyway, but I managed to get some off the grass when we were leaving and ran it back in. Anyway, poop appears to be filled with worm eggs, so I'm assuming he'll call me tonight/tomorrow and confirm she's got some sort of worm. I'm thinking tapeworm because of the "rice grain" appearance of the little white flecks. I have no idea where she picked them up, but probably in the pet areas where no one cleans up after their pets 😡 Poor pup has been miserable, and no wonder. Hopefully I can get worm meds tomorrow or even Saturday and start her on them. She got fluids and some flo today, plus I gave her the meds she's supposed to start tonight in the hopes of making her feel a bit better. I'm just really hoping it buys me get more than a couple hours of sleep at a time tonight - I was totally zonked today from having to take her out so frequently. But really, I just want her on the road to recovery so she isn't so pathetic and sad 🙁

I would be really surprised if tapeworms caused vomiting and diarrhea, never seen it before, at least not the most common kind of tapeworms - the kind that they get from ingesting infected fleas. That's not to say it can't happen, I just haven't ever seen it. On a side note, if it is Diplydium caninium (don't think I spelled that right) she wouldn't have picked them up where other people aren't picking up after their pets.

My tingling toe has turned into a tingling leg. It fell asleep 7 hours ago in anatomy class and hasn't woken up. If it's still tingling after lab tomorrow, I'm probably going to have to head over to the hospital and sit and wait there for 6-8 hours. I have a doctors appointment on Tuesday. If I hold out until then, it would be at least a week to order additional tests and my leg could fall off by then lol.

I am deathly afraid of going to the hospital. Someone once told me that our wait times are sooo long because people abuse the system and clog up the waiting rooms with non-emergencies. I don't want to be one of those people! But my family doctor is 6 hours away and there is one walk-in clinic for all 28 000 of us in my current city. They only take 30 people a night so you have to show up super early. It's further away from the hospital and not on the bus route. Also, I've had extremely rude doctors 2/4 of the times I've been there, which puts me off from going to see a stranger.

Anatomy test. Tomorrow. 4 hours. Urgh!

I'm gonna kick its ass, but still: urgh.

My knee is killing me!!! I can barely touch it and it hurts. Of course it doesn't help that I ran it into 5,000 things today at work like a complete idiot.

Ick, hope it feels better! Yeah, it's somehow way too easy to run into things constantly at work. It's not complete idiot, it's natural to do, esp with animals around! I always have random bruises and have no clue where they came from.. probably a big dog running me into a door or banging my head on a cage.

You're gonna kick ass 😉

I don't know that I kicked anatomy's ass per se, but I think I did OK. So maybe I slapped it on the ass and made it feel uncomfortable.

haha LOVE IT!!! I've got one on Tuesday - time to start practicin' ma moves! 😀

Worked a 16 hour day on my neurology rotation Thursday, with the last 5 hours standing in a back surgery. I have a bad knee and it was starting to twinge, but we only had 1 appointment on the books the next day, so I thought I'd have a chance to rest it. Slept maybe 5 hours so I could check in on all of my patients before 7:30 and get the orders written for 8. Friday was an 18 hour day spent almost entirely on my feet. our 1 appointment turned into 6 and we had several emergencies come in as well. I scrubbed in to another surgery and had to leave after 15 minutes so I could work emergency duty. We were slammed and ICU was out 3 techs/assistants. Not to mention ER duty is responsible for patient care of patients in the other wards and returning phone calls. Sadly, we had a patient code on us in ICU and had to euthanize a patient on our service because her condition had so badly degenerated. It didn't get much better after that. At the end of the night, I had to give a MRSA + dog pills. Except that the dog is a biter and wouldn't take his pill pockets (for which I had already removed his muzzle). I got bitten (not through the skin, thankfully). Left school at 2 am and went to the ER to get documentation filled out (supervisor's idea, not mine). Got home at 2:30 and passed out. Had to be at school by 6:30 am today to be able to treat all my patients and write orders for 8 am (had 4 patients in ICU by this morning). Due to the amount of new developments, I wasn't able to leave until 11 am.

I'm just tired and cranky, I know. But I'm not sure why they didn't have a back up plan for being slammed. We had a student that wasn't even in the small animal hospital come in and help us and we still were there 3 hours past 11 (when ER duty usually ends). The ICU techs were stressed, the intern on call was slammed, and the students were unable to keep on top of anything. I would think being able to call back-ups would be a positive.

Also, I'm not entirely sure why the student on the MRSA + dog's case decided that a known aggressive dog should be given oral meds.

I am so exhausted, and my brain hurts 🙁

I'm sleeping, but I don't feel refreshed. I have A avgs. in all my classes, but I am spazzing that I might lose them. I'm counting down the days of the semester's end. It cannot come soon enough. 😴

I know exactly how you feel!!!! Worked so hard to get to this point and I can just see the grades tanking with all those cumulative finals back to back to back to back! Hang in there! Thanksgiving break is right around the corner 🙂 And then you're a stone's throw away from the winter holidays!!

Ditto.

I hate myself for overly-stressing about easy classes that I have A's in. I often wish that I care less.

All my finals are back to back to back to back. And they start on the first day of the exam cycle so I only have two days to prepare for all of them after classes end. 3/4 are cumilative (Anatomy first, invertebrate zoology and I end with biochemistry!) And two of my exams go from 6pm-10pm. The last bus stops by the college at 9:30. If an exam runs past 9:15, I have to spend $11 on a cab... and I'm POOR.

I don't know how I'm going to prepare for them. I have to get used to it though. If I survive this string of finals with decent grades, I'll have to deal with this in vet school I think.

Another little rant... I know I did horrible on my biochem midterm. I saw last years test and figured it would be easy. What I learned is that you have to memorize every single little pointless thing (who cares what Edmund's does, give the chemical name for 1 pt!) which is difficult to do when your eyes are twitching. I am disappointed in myself. Luckily, he lets us make up for it on the final exam. We can choose to write an extra paper and if we do better on that than we have done on our midterm, it will replace our midterm grade. *fingers crossed*
