I wanted to cry just swallowing my own spit my throat was so full of painful ulcers. That was horrible. Even the magic mouthwash as you put it, could only do so much, and eating still sucked. I lost a ton of weight that Christmas break.

Ugh. Just thinking back on that is awful.

The only positive thing that came out of it was that I promptly passed it on to my kids, who got the typical mild kid case with a minor rash and now won't have to get it as adults. 🙂

holy smokes! these all sound so awful! i dont think i ever had any of that as a kid - i might have dumped 99% of all memories i had prior to vet school, but i feel like i'd remember that?

at least i know where mine came from - its my own fault for chewing on my regulator mouth piece :laugh: pay back i suppose for shortening its life span! i'm just confused because it's not getting better 🙁 not really sure if theres anything i can do about it here. 3rd world medicine is lacking for sure (from the health clinic that told me my bronchitis/walking pneumonia would be cured based on my orange juice consumption alone :uhno: ) 2 more weeks i guess?

What a bummer that you can't have your dream place because of your parrot. Senegals are really great birds too, but unfortunately most people don't know enough about parrots to realize that different species behave differently. I have an umbrella cockatoo (translation: bigger, louder, possibly messier, definitely destructive) and luckily I aren't had much of a problem finding apartments, although I only looked into ones which specified pets were welcome. Thank goodness my guy is extremely well behaved as far as too's go but it's my fear that I could be looking for a place mid semester if he doesn't adjust well......my sympathies!

How did you approach asking about him? I'm wondering what I am doing wrong. I have only been calling pet friendly places too. I asked most of the landlords on my showings specifically about the bird, where that they could see I was a responsible and mature person. I have calmly explained that he is small and well behaved and does not scream. And that I am prepared to take precautionary measures to protect the property from bathwater :laugh:

Every single person has said no, including a veterinary student that owned the house herself and was looking for a roommate. And I was planning on putting him in my bedroom, not a common place.

I am not willing to have him illegally in a property. I cannot afford to be evicted or fined, and I want to have the freedom to schedule repairs when I cannot be home. Plus he is a rescue and not well socialized and very bonded to me, so its not like a dog you can just ask someone to keep for a few days.

My dream property may have just fallen through anyway. Apparently 20 minutes after I submitted my application, paid the fee, and was approved, the current tenants applied to break their lease early and were also approved. So I was called and told either I had to take it two months earlier than I wanted or they would put it back on the market for a June lease date. Apparently if its not rented by May 31 its mine for August, but if it is I'm SOL. And that means that I have to wait until June to arrange roommates. So irritated with the whole deal. I haven't gotten my homework done and am way behind in studying for finals becaue I was trying to arrange all of this and find roommates, and then it blows up anyway.

Honestly Im wondering if your not telling them too much about what might go wrong? When I applied for properties I submitted a seperate statement about how I manage my cat - but the public in general thinks that cats piss everywhere and claw up carpet, so I think thats reasonable. I personally don't think many people know much at all about birds, so maybe you going "oh he doesn't scream and ill put down huge amounts of vinyl etc etc" makes them think about things that they weren't already? like, maybe you are inadvertantly pointing out the downsides of your own pet that they wouldn't consider otherwise?

Haha I didn't think of that. No, he just takes baths in his water and then shakes, so he does splash water on the walls, which can ruin dry wall over time. But I guess maybe that does make people who aren't familiar with birds wonder....

I just know most people think birds are really messy (which they are, not going to lie), so I was trying to show I would be responsible and make sure nothing got damaged. But you all have a good point that by trying to vouch for my good management may be inadvertantly telling them birds are a disaster.
 
On my ONE day to sleep in this week, I get woken up by a loud crash/bang and the sound of glass shattering.

One of the cats decided to jump off the kitchen table, taking the entire towel on there with her. Glasses that were drying from last and all. Glass all over my floor. In the cat litter. In the cat food/water bowls. Everywhere.

NOT what I want to clean up at 5:30 in the morning on my day off. Of course, now I am wide awake.

A good friend of mine has 9 cats and he and his wife lived in a rental for 5 years and never got caught even though they were only allowed 2. And I have another friend who has 2 dogs and 2 cats, is only allowed 2 pets, and has lived in her rental for 8 years and never gotten caught.

I'm all for being upfront and a law-abiding citizen but if you're confident your bird won't cause any damage, what's the harm?

An ex boyfriend and I did this in a no pet rental house. Got away with it for 2 years, until someone forgot to put a barrier back on the windows and the landlord saw the cat sitting in the window when he drove by. 👎

It took me a little while to find a house that would allow my 2 85 pound Labs. I think a lot of it is about marketing your pets - when I was contacting landlords I specifically said I was looking for a place that would allow my 2 senior Labs (they're not totally in the senior age bracket but are pretty darn close and are super lazy). I made a point to say that they are both completely housetrained (truth), up-to-date on vaccines (truth), on flea prevention year round (truth), and that we exercise them at least once daily (truth). One of the vets that I work with who also treats my dogs said she would provide a written statement saying that they are well behaved and in perfect health. My current landlord wanted to meet them before agreeing to let us live there so I obliged and it went totally fine.

Showing that you're not a dirt-bag pet owner goes a long way 😉

Agreed with "selling" your dog! I make sure to always tell potential landlords that she's a senior (way into the senior bracket haha), small (25lbs), completely house trained, does not bark (because once they think small dog they think yapping all day), sleeps all day and is friendly. I don't think it could hurt to mention that you're diligent about picking up poop either 😉

Just logged on to check the status of my student loan application. Message? "Letter explaining ineligibility has been sent". :bang: I am eligible! So now I have to wait for this damn letter, then spend way too much time on the phone explaining to them why they're wrong. Why can't this process ever be simple?! 😡
 
Why is it that the people who show up late are always the one who have to give you their life stories? I had 2 appointments back to back for surgeries that both showed up late and BOTH decided to talk instead of filling out the paperwork. One even tried to sell me one of her puppies! I hate repeating myself and I hate even more to be ignored. The other couple spent 2 minutes arguing about if the dog could get tramadol or not. -.- Thanks for wasting my time.
 
Looks like I'm going to be at the office late tonight with the huge stack of MRs that just landed on my desk. Of course it's all 'rush' as well. 😡

I want to be outside in the sun! 🙁

I think someone stole my drink from my lunchbox. And it wasn't in like an outside pocket of my lunchbox. You had to unzip it and actually go within my lunchbox to find it. Rather annoyed. They cost like $1 at Wawa...go buy your own.

SO's miata that he just bought needs a new transmission. It won't go into 5th gear.

He has had the worst luck with that damn car and I just feel how disheartened he is getting with it.

There is one right across the street fromthe vet school.I'm sure you can tell where most of my money goes. We all think an underground tunnel should be built for when it's cold out.
 
I really wish I had a freaking clue what to do with my summer after the wedding. Options I can think of: beg my old boss to take me back working for free just so I can tally my summer as working with lab animals so I don't completely shoot my chances of residency in the foot.


Yeah, that's the only thing I can think of right now. Urg.

I think sunshinevet might have nailed it in the head. Esp with pet friendly apts, usually it's never a problem if you just say, "so I saw that this is a pet friendly apt. I just wanted to make sure that my little caged bird is okay to bring along." Unless they're bird savvy, most apt managers will just think a budgie or a cockatiel and they have no probs with it. Dont give unnecessary details unless they ask. If you're sure that your Senegal won't cause a problem, there is no reason for you to tell them more. Don't call it a parrot, and don't tell them it doesn't scream or that it's not destructive. Or that you always supervise outside playtime. No reason to make them suspect that you might have a macaw, which is what most people think of when you say parrot. If they ask what kind of bird, just say you have a Senegal, and say it's a cute little bird that is yay big and lives in a cage. talk about it like you would a pet rat/guinea pig. I know many people with well behaved psittacines (bigger ones) who do just fine getting by their landlords this way.

Agreed with previous posters. I definitely focused on his positive qualities: generally quiet, caged unless directly supervised, not messy as far as birds go, poops in the toilet 😀 can distinguish chew toys and furniture, etc. my future landlord was mainly concerned that he would be loud late at night, but I quickly explained that he requires 12 hours of sleep a night and he is in bed around 7 PM.
 
It's amazing how one bad day at work can make me go from happy to depressed. I don't want to do anything. I don't want to eat. I don't even want to feed the rats. I don't want to go to the gym. I don't want to make the bracelets for a friend. I just want to curl up in bed.

I started searching for jobs and put three resumes out there so far. I didn't hear back at all from the doggy day care, so that was nilch. The place I love is only hiring part-time. The new restaurant that is opening soon was hoping for someone with kitchen experience, which I don't have.

I've been browsing the classifieds and job banks. All it's doing is confirming that I spent $80 000 on a useless degree. I'm unwanted and unemployable. This city is also notorious for employers who won't even acknowledging you when you apply for a job. Little indie vegetarian coffee shops don't even acknowledge the fact that your someone from your demographic wants to work for you and has a lot to offer.

Should have went to vet tech school. **** this ****.

I can't stand it when people take food that isn't theirs. Especially because if caught, they invariably laugh it off and tell you that you shouldn't be mad. Drives me nuts.

No idea but that's exactly how I feel about that. I expect stuff like that in like elementary/middle school...even possibly high school, but vet school? Sheesh. I know we can act like high schoolers at times, but I didn't really think someone would take my soda. Although, I should have predicted it. Someone took my friend's rice out of her container of left overs. Left the rest of her food, but just took the rice. Just as odd.

my father was invited to attend a luncheon with the chief vet of the national zoo the day before i get home. 😡 bahhhhhhh 🙁 that would be so cool!
 
I just looooove when my dog decides to make a freshly-folded pile of clean laundry into her bed and gets little white hairs all over everything. It's really great. :meanie:

We have a mouse in the house and it just outsmarted the trap! It got the cheese and didn't set it off. I already feel guilty trying to kill it, but now I know it's smart and dextrous. That makes the killing much worse.

funny you should you should mention a "smart" mouse in blacksburg. a couple of years ago, my roommate and i noticed some small yet strange events happening in our household. my roommate would occasionally hear scratching in the walls, we'd sometimes find chocolate that had a corner nibbled out of it, or perhaps some item was chewed through to get into a package of peanut butter crackers. thing was, this mouse only ate those 2 items. in his at least 6 month stay with us, he only nailed chocolate bars and peanut butter crackers, despite having access to a lot more. of course when we finally invested in a live trap at the end of the semester, he disappeared without a trace, but man that little guy was smart! one of his "finer" thievings was a bit of godiva! perhaps our blacksburg mouse is now your blacksburg mouse! 😉
 
You know, I didn't even consider a live trap. I only thought I didn't want to use a poison bait, cuz I can't be sure my dog wouldn't eat it after it dies. Plus we have some outdoor neighborhood cats.
I put peanut butter on the trap we have now, but if this smart mouse avoids death tonight, then a live trap it is. What do you do with the mouse after you trap it?

jmo- luckily the mouse hasn't stated eating anything yet, as far as I can tell. Pretty sure I caught it in its first few forays into the house. Don't want it to get comfy here and eat all of my chocolate! I need it to get through finals.
