I am taking a biochem lab. My lab partner and I are required to turn in a joint manuscript for the project we worked on all semester. He never came to class prepared, so I ended up doing 95% of the work. I read him off data as I collected it, CLEARLY, and he says "ok" and acts like he is writing it down. So halfway through the semester, the professor asked me to come see him. Apparently my lab partner was turning in data on postlabs that didn't match mine and wanted my take (the prof saw I was doing the work and knew I had the right data- plus I got 108% on my midterm and my partner failed it.) So I kind of tried to scout it out, and apparently my partner was taking data from his friends in the class (who he spends most of the time talking to and not paying attention), and then altering the numbers randomly to make it not look like he was cheating.

So then he realized our lab notebooks were going to be collected. So he wanted to borrow mine overnight to get data he missed. I said no, but offered that he could look at it during a 30min period we had to wait for a gel to run to get the points he missed. He choose to go get dinner with his friends instead. And now wants me to email him all the data. Then another day he "couldn't do the calculations on the postlab because he missed some data" and wanted to copy mine one minute before class started. I said I needed to turn it in so it wasn't late, and put it on the professor's desk. The professor stepped out and my lab partner went up to the desk and COPIED MY DATA, right there in the front of the classroom.

So for the manuscript, I told him to do the abstract and the introduction, and I would do the rest. So he emails me his work last night. The abstract is one sentence long. The introduction is about four. Then he "wrote" the entire methods and results sections to "help me out". First of all, its almost publishable quality, better than I could have done, and he doesn't have any idea what is going on in class. And then its funny how we never ran an SDS-PAGE with two sets of dilutions and 12 lanes... or how we never used a 0.2M NaCl solution for an IEX... but its all in there. Plus there are absorbance ranges, pH results, extinction coefficients in it that certainly were not our data. :wtf:

So obviously its plagerized from somewhere. I'm going to have to do the whole thing myself, because I can't risk my acceptance over some idiot's work who clearly doesn't understand ethics. So am I nice and put his name on my work too, or am I a female dog and tell the professor the situation and turn in my own copy? Oh yeah, and its due tomorrow.

I had a group project in Entomology where we had one team member never show up to our site to collect samples or help us with the lab report. We ended up putting her name on the paper, but email the professor to inform him of the situation. We all agreed that it wasn't fair for her to get credit for work she didn't do, but we didn't feel comfortable taking her name off the paper entirely (she showed up like once), so we decided our professor should deal with it in a way that he felt was appropriate.

We work with Petco and they can't even tell if an animal is sick half the time when they bring it into the clinic. We've had a few actually die on us because they were in such bad shape, or they bring us ones that have no symptoms at all and the doc deems them completely healthy. 🙄 I doubt they know much more about the best food for an animal. Hopefully she'll listen to you soon.

They asked me for advice on what they should feed their dogs and then informed me that I was wrong because the petsmart employer said blah blah blah. Why even ask then?

We are the vet for the Petco in my town. The ones being very sick are a problem, but remember with exotic animals especially, they don't show symptoms until they're REALLY sick, and often it's too late. This is the case with pets people actually own, and in a lot of cases they really really know their animals. As for the healthy animals, if a customer brings up what they think is an issue they are required to get the animal seen. (this is in no way to be taken as an endorsement of the employees, but there's more to the animals that are seen than you're discussing lol)

I guess to give your partner a chance I would email him and tell him it's all unusable and unless he gives you something legitimate it's only going to be your name on the paper. That way you give him the chance to do a better job and if/when he can't follow through, you can feel less like a jerk about not putting his name on the paper that YOU did.

I agree with wildcat, just put your name on it, end of story. At my school, if we put people's name on any lab work or research paper, and they DID NOT contribute, we are actually liable for putting their names because it is against the honor code. So, if you were at my university, YOU could fail the paper just for putting it! Screw him, do your work and turn it in. Sometimes you have to just stop being nice and just worry about YOU.

Thanks everyone for the input. I talked to him and outright told him that his work was not acceptable and I wouldn't turn in any work that I thought could jeapardize my future. I pointed out he included tests we did not do and all of his reagents were not what we used, etc. I told him that if I could not trust him to do original work to tell me now and I would finish my paper on my own. And he says he will redo it... so we will see. I am going to be prepared either way. Unfortunately, my studying for my three exams is going to suffer as a result.
 
If there was ever a reason to revoke the freedom of speech, it's the New Releases section of Netflix. Good Lord. Who on earth watches this crap? 🙄

Yea, I know... It's still a little frustrating at times though mainly because of the times they bring us an animal that has a problem they SHOULD know how to fix, like a calcium deficiency so the lizards get twisted bones. I guess they've just been irritating me lately...

I hope he gets in big trouble for plagiarism at some point in his academic career. You are a nice lab partner, though, to allow him the opportunity to make it right. I always assume that if they didn't care yesterday, they won't care tomorrow just because I call them out on it, and I'm not willing to wait around to see if I'm wrong.

It sounds like you berated him as tactfully as imaginable :meanie: Is there any way HE might turn something separate in with YOUR name on it? If that's the case, talking to the professor later goes from "good idea" to "nonnegotiable," IMO.

Oh I hear ya. They really shouldn't be getting calcium deficiencies in the first pace. They should know better than that.
 
First day of summer classes and I have a horrible, horrible migraine. I haven't had one in a very long time. Darnit. At least the first day is usually not to bad.

i can't even comprehend what just happened in path. brutal brutal brutal. it was so awful and out of left field, i'm not even that upset. pretty sure at least 50% of the class has to be officially failing now though because we had 13 fails and 50% at below a 75% going into the exam (and the people that normally do well did terribly). 😱

I feel your pain. I heard someone crying during ours. And grunting in frustration :laugh:
 
Yesterday was suppose to be my day to get the house clean and organized and make a huge pile of things to sell. And wash a lot of laundry. I have no time in the next 2 weeks to do this.
And of course I was/am sick. 🙁 Head cold/migraine/nausea allll day yesterday. The only time I got out of bed was to go puke and to let the dog out. 👎
 
AGHHHHHHHHHHH found a HUGE engorged tick on my doggie 🙁 grossssss! now she's gonna get erhlichiosis!!! ticks are so ewww.

this is actually the first tick i've found on her which is pretty big, they're super endemic and EVERYWHERE here! and they transmit tons of badness like ehrlichia, anaplasma, etc. (no lyme though haha)
 
Does anyone else ever have silent mental arguments with people who annoy you?

Any time someone has been doing something that irritates me, I start to think to myself "If they do that again, I'm going to say this." And then I start to picture how they might reply. And then I think about how I would respond to that reply. And before I know it, I'm having an all-out imaginary argument with this person in my head.

It's absolutely ridiculous. I'm now completely PO'd at someone I haven't even spoken to yet today, about an argument we haven't even had yet. I am such an idiot sometimes. :smack:

:laugh: I do this sometimes. And then they do that little tiny thing that started the whole imaginary argument and I end up being more mad at them than I should be. And they are all sorts of confused.
 
That really depressing moment when your plans to eat delicious Texas Roadhouse rolls and beer for dinner get cancelled :uhno:

that moment when you live in a country that doesn't have TR and worse than that, theres none within like 100 miles of my house in a week either 🙁 i've always wanted to make the pinterest recipes though

I just looked to see if TR existed outside the US, it does! In Dubai (2 places) and Kuwait... 🙁

I hope I get some good results for these last two exams, I really, really want (need) to go home this summer.

HA! I do that all the time... Not even necessarily arguments either. Sometimes I have whole conversations about something important that I've been procrastinating talking about. Sometimes I think I must be the biggest chicken😳
 
When I ask for vacation, I expect vacation days to be used. Not to be worked immediately before and after for more days in a row that are typically accepted without input from me. So please don't assume I want to keep my days off stock-piled.

Their steaks are delicious, but their yeast rolls with cinnamon butter are all that matters. I think I might grab them to go 😳

I think this is a solid decision. And I also think that you must get an extra roll and smother it in cinnamon butter and eat it in dedication to me. 😉
 
Some chick commit suicide in the library at school a couple hours ago. There's this spiral staircase and she jumped from the 4th floor and died on impact :O

hmm thats not where i'da guessed i could find TR! too bad neither of those places is near grenada 😉 steak and delicious bread isnt really a grenadian thing. dinner rolls are pretty rare and usually rather pathetic. 😎

Might be a silly rant but I'm the type of person who responds to emails ASAP and avoids having email notifications untended to so it is super annoying when people don't respond. Especially if it's my own PI regarding the thesis title for the commencement that she may or may not let me attend. I'm not a quitter but she is really pushing my buttons and making me feel like I'm just a piece of gum stuck to her expensive designer shoes that she doesn't give two poops about and just wants to trash. Grrrrrrrr...

A few weeks ago we had a big group of people so we put our name in at the ale house and I grabbed my friend (who loves their rolls too) and said, "hey, we should...uh...go check next door (TR) and see how long their wait is :meanie:"
So we went over, put in our name, asked if we could buy a few rolls, and the hostess gave us a basket EACH of rolls no charge. We ate them, our table next door became available, and we peaced out :ninja:

DREADING going back to work tomorrow. Having someone come in for a working interview tomorrow so I have to be in interviewer mode. Pleh.

I need to get my ducks in a row and move on to better opportunities. My guilt around screwing my coworkers over by leaving is slowing me down.

ok but you have to look at the menu ahead of time - I would hate to pick a place you won't be able to eat anything. Also it looks like I won't have a weekday lunch free until the 28th.

that is so awful 🙁 the university sent out an email yesterday notifying the student body about a sudden death of one of the 2nd year med students. turns out she committed suicide in her home and they discovered her after she failed to pick her sister up from the airport 🙁

do you like seafood? they have fresh seafood dishes by the barrel here. i recently discovered yummy mini french bread loafs at the grocery store - the catch is you have to eat them quickly or they dry out/go stale fast!

Ugh. Yikes. We had a resident commit suicide in my apartment building this semester. 3 or 4 days after she won some huge award. Very sad 🙁
I feel bad for whoever witnessed the jump from the 4th floor. :lame:
