Fun story. A few weeks before I left for school one of our techs was doing a dental on her new dog she had just adopted and decided a carnassial needed to come out...tried to extract it herself and broke the dogs jaw. NOT GOOD.

Sorry for your pup. Also. I think teeth are gross.

Umm.... erm... I uh... I don't see any reason why a tech would decide to attempt to extract a carnassial tooth on her own; those are not "simple" extractions by a long shot. Did the vet actually allow her to attempt this?

What?! Not. Good. That poor dog! I helped prep my girl for surgery, and monitored her during, but did not do the dirty work. Nuh-uh.

So, she's home now and soooooo uncomfortable. Breaks my heart, but it had to be done 🙁 Let the spoiling commence...

It's illegal actually (I think it is in most places). And the short answer to your question would be no.

I hope she has some good pain meds. I had a dog a few years back that had 11 teeth extracted, she did wonderfully though (despite a rather scary recovery during waking up from the anaesthesia). Within 3 days, she was acting as if nothing had happened.

Yeah, I was going to say, she had the potential to get herself into a lot of trouble there. Carnassial teeth often don't come out without some drilling and you can do a lot of damage there, she is lucky that only the jaw broke as she could have punctured into the brain or eye socket. I feel bad for the dog, hope he/she was ok. I also hope that tech got a good reprimand...

It depends on the state I'm pretty sure. But regardless, if it was a hard extraction she should have gotten help.

My old Hobo kitty had to have his very last tooth extracted and the doctor actually broke his jaw, though Kitties are admittedly easier to break.

I have not looked into each individual state laws as far as extracting teeth in pets, but I would think that falls under the definition of surgery and I am rather certain that surgery is illegal for techs to perform in all states.
Extractions are not easy, the vets I have worked with hate them because of this reason. There is also potential for serious damage to occur even when you do know what you are doing (as seen with your kitty, unfortunately). A tech should not have even attempted an extraction without first consulting with the vet.

It does vary by state. There are some that allow it, but it happens to be a DVM-only thing where I'm located.

That being said, it does happen, even if you're trying your best to be careful. It was not pretty, had to wire the jaw, dog was under for HOURS, ended up seeing a dental specialist the next day to have the jaw re-wired. So in a way, it's a good thing it was her dog and not an actual clients....lesson learned.

Yeah, she came home with her "stuff". She's been crying with her mouth closed, but is otherwise fine. Just got her to drink some warm homemade beef broth, and now she's lying down. My other dogs are, thankfully, giving her space. I'm not sure yet how I'm gonna get those pills in her later...

My sister is in the hospital. 🙁 She has mono and wasn't doing well, and now she's apparently going to have to get her tonsils out too.

Credentialed techs are allowed to do simple extractions in certain states--my understanding of a simple extraction was one that doesn't require the use of a root elevator. Definitely no drilling or digging around allowed. It would have to be one nasty carnassial for me to think it could be just plucked out...and in that case, no wonder the jaw fractured!

It's definitely legal for a LVT to perform dental cleanings and extractions in certain states. My home state it was legal. All it takes is practice and a good teacher to learn how to properly perform an extraction, even on a carnassial.

Hopefully, I won't need that drug! That's the last thing we need in WW. A cranky WS. For now, I'll just enjoy my Norco 😉 Although, I'm really tired of sitting on this couch and falling asleep randomly. This morning I had drug dreams. :whoa: They were weird.

Pretty picture of my knee! If it's too gruesome for y'all, I can take it down. (humans are gross!) There are holes in the top of my knee as well, but I couldn't get the bandage off all the way.

It's for a different problem than the knee, WS. get sleep while you still can!

Good! (but not good, wish you didn't have to take it) I really don't need that tacked on, haha!

I'm already SO over relaxing, doing nothing and sleeping all the time. Already had 7 weeks of not working/able to do much. I'm sick of it.

Getting the whole "Ohhh.. I thought you wanted to be a REAL doctor".... turns my stomach whenever I get that response after people hear I'm applying to veterinary school.. I don't know if people are really that clueless or if it is intended as an insult.

I'd put my bet on "clueless" - there's a lot of stupid out there.

Not even Thanksgiving yet and I have already gotten 2 rejections.......really trying to stay hopeful for this cycle but it is getting hard. 🙁🤔

my newest response to that is "i'm happy to not be a 'real' doctor if it means that i don't have to deal with human vomit and diarrhea thank you"

Don't stress. You only need one acceptance 🙂

Therio is one of our easiest classes. Endocrine on the other hand... :/ Weird how schools are so different.

I moved back in with my parents last month to save some money/didn't see any point in signing a year lease when I will hopefully be leaving in less time than that. I love my family but oh my god does my dad have a temper. I went downstairs to find him screaming at his dog (I have no idea what for) and quickly retreated back to my room. My mother likes to come knock on my door to ask me about my day or if I like her outfit or any other question she can come up with. It doesn't help that circumstances have both of my (above 18 yr old) siblings living in the house as well. Adding on my dog and the two cats its a pretty full house over here! I miss my old apartment and having actual alone time 🙁

I'm just. I don't even know. Completely emotionally drained? There are PT exercises I am suppose to be doing right now, but I can't. I tell my muscles to "go" and they don't. Even try doing both legs at the same time to trick the bad one, and nothing. I can flex my foot/ankle, but tell my leg to lift and it won't even budge. Flex my quad or hammy, and nothing.
And why do I have to swell so much?! Why?! It's not helping matters. (and yes, I have my knee wrapped in an icewater bath 24/7)

And I haven't been able to sleep more than 2-3 hrs at a time in the last 4 days and most of it is drug induced. I'm sure that's helping matters.

I've been there... I moved back in with my parents about a year ago to save money for vet school. Just keep reminding yourself that it's only for a short time. It takes awhile for the awkwardness to go away and to get used to having a house full of people, but it will get better 🙂

Just try to remember that the day's going to come when these people won't be in your life any longer and you're going to wish they were - in fact, someday you'll be willing to give anything to have your Mom knock on your door and ask you some stupid question, and that day may come sooner than you think... Love them while you can.

Just dealt with a guy I've been talking to that has an issue with my dog being such a huge part of my life. See ya! Don't let the door smack your ass on the way out! Buh bye.

It really drives me nuts when people sign off of Skype in the middle of a conversation without so much as a goodbye. Even if we haven't said anything to each other for a few minutes, it's still polite to notify the other person that you're leaving. It is beyond frustrating when you go to say something and abruptly discover that the person you were talking to is no longer there.

It's especially infuriating when your boyfriend does it too. :boom:

Got into an argument with my boyfriend about texting etiquette this week. We don't really FaceTime much and he's horrendous at talking on the phone (he just mumbles and I spend most of the conversation asking him to repeat himself) so we mostly text. He's terrible at responding and he will drop the conversation for long periods of time and it infuriates me to no end. Sometimes he just puts his phone down and walks away, sometime he goes to work, goes for a run and I'm left wondering what the heck he's doing. I don't think it's unreasonable to say "hey babe going for a run be back in a bit" or just say you're busy and we can chat later. On top of that, he has read receipts enabled, so I can see what time he reads a text and it drives me crazy that he read it and then responds an hour later 😡 It makes me feel like a crazy person! Then he'll point out that we've been talking "all night" and that I should calm down when really, I've spent most of it waiting for a response. My point is, we wouldn't have to do that if he could just dedicate time to talking and responding in a timely manner. I don't actually want to talk all night, I could say everything I need to for the day in 15 minutes but he draws it out unnecessarily. The other day, he took 45 minutes to respond to a question that I could see he had read and in that period he tweeted 3 times, so he was definitely on his phone. 😡

Obviously that hit a nerve. 🙂 sorry about your skyping troubles BD, I would be pretty hurt if that happened to me.

Yep, mine does that too and it also drives me nuts. Usually I can justify it knowing he's in class or hanging out with his friends, but it still irritates me when I have to wait hours and hours for a simple response. Even better, he frequently ignores my questions entirely. As far as I can tell, he does this when he thinks I won't like the answer. A week ago I asked him if he'd be interested in coming to Montreal with me if I decide to attend the CVMA symposium. Still haven't gotten an answer, which I'm assuming means no. 🙄

Ugh. This crap was irritating when we were in the same zip code, but it's absolutely infuriating when you're in another country entirely and text/skype is all you have.

Welp, had a mental break down this evening. Full on sobbing and hysterical whining. Glad I had my guinea pig to cheer me up. Just having something to hold and cuddle makes it so much easier to get through. He's a great listener, too! Don't worry, he was compensated with lots of vegetables for his time.:beaver: (what is that.)

🙁 Hang in there!
I had a break down yesterday, for the first time in a long time. Both my cats were cuddling with me. They always seem to know the right time.

This is not an important or dreadful rant, but I'm irritated and need to bitch to someone. Sorry SDN.

My roomie is a great friend and fabulous 99% of the time, but sometimes I could just strangle her. She went to the movies with her boyfriend last night and didn't take her house keys with her, asking me to leave the door open if I went to bed before she got back - that's fine, whatever. I did that. However, my SO and I got up at 6am this morning to drive to a race and I A) didn't realize she hadn't come home, and B) didn't think twice about locking the door on the way out. As I'm walking to the car after the race (an hour away, I add), I get a pissed off phone call because she's locked out. Well crap, my bad for locking it, but maybe TAKE YOUR HOUSEKEYS with you if you are going to be away from the house for >12hrs. grr.

I get home an hour or two later (she got a spare key from the office to get in) and she's cleaning the kitchen. Cool! I'm going for a nap, since I was up past midnight checking on my surgery dog, woke up early, and ya know, just ran a race and am tired. Halfway into beautiful, warm lala-land, she knocks on my door and goes "What are you doing? Are you going to help me clean? I'm cleaning downstairs." Sleepy Trilt responds with "I'm taking a nap, leave whatever you want me to do and I'll do it later." (which I think is reasonable..?) She sighs exaggeratedly, then huffs and puffs down the stairs. And then after I wake up, pointedly ignores me while she gets ready for a party later.

Seriously, someone pissed on her poptarts this morning.
