Depends what the cause is. I had horrible food poisoning in the Dominican Republic that set in after 6 hours. Salmonella and S. aureus can start within hours, Shigella or Campylobacter can take days.

Whatever it is, it appears I may have it. 🙁

TooLove beat me to it. (every time I see your name I think of the mawwaige guy in Princess Bride  )

The nasty stomach bug has been going around. I refuse to get it.

I hate that there isn't more we can do about owners making horrible choices for their pets. I do understand that it's their animal and ultimately how and to what extent we treat is their decision, but sometimes I just want to scream. They don't have to sit and watch their animal suffer. We had a 6mo puppy come in last night that had been shot in the face, the bullet penetrated his skull and basically obliterated one side of his frontal lobe. He's comatose but has intense pain response. No pupillary response, no response to sound. The owner will not even CONSIDER euthanasia because "she's not a murderer", and "He could be Healed (religious sense)". Demands every treatment possible and heroic measures if he crashes. This dog spent the entire day vocal in pain despite heavy sedation and pain control while the owner refused to visit and would just talk forever on the phone about how we're just pessimists and he's "strong". Strong doesn't matter lady, his brain is scrambled. Hopefully the universe will show some mercy and he'll pass on his own overnight.

S.aureus was the one that starts earliest. In public health we learned salmonella doesn't crop up until like three weeks later. Sucks no matter what it is though 🙁

That's awful. What part did she play in its injury? I'm sure the puppy didn't shoot itself in the face.

Every time I hear about people who consider euthanasia to be "murder" I can only wonder how they view other medical procedures given how narrow their definitions seem to be.

dear facebook veterinary community: please READ the articles you forward instead of just blindly forwarding things. you look really really stupid when you're sharing a Blue Buffalo recall article from 2010. Do your homework! Do a basic search yourself, check the VIN recall center! Regardless of your opinion on the food, spreading information that is 3 years old and currently false only creates worry and fear in the lay people that expect you to know what you're doing.

Not just the vet community. I keep on getting old food recall notices posted by people who feed raw or home or whatever to make a point how dangerous the food the rest of us are using. They get a lot of mileage out of those old articles....and then everyone reposts to their pet friend.

I agree quite annoying.

i agree that its stupid and frustrating when lay people do it, but i find it particularly disturbing when in the last 12h 5 of my classmates have shared a link to an old recall and a 6th has shared the article and a previous one earlier this week and is actually a veterinarian! the very first thing when i saw the article (without even really looking at it because it wasn't a reputable source website) was hop on VIN and look at the recall center. finding nothing there, i did a VIN search because surely if a product is recalling food because it is causing vitamin abnormalities, there are going to be vets talking about their clients and cases. finding nothing there i went back to look at the original article and low and behold its really old.

In that she was an irresponsible pet owner who let him run loose unattended, she was involved. But he was chasing someone's cattle, so the person that shot him was legally in the right.

my sentiments exactly haha

at least i'm not likely to get porn sites here when looking up an esophageal surgery procedure unlike google...

Yes, I'm dredging this post up ...

So, I had an open-book, open-reference exam for my SA Therio final. There was a question related to estrogen on the exam that I was fuzzy about, so I totally unwisely googled "estrogen bitch" during the middle of the exam.

Oh the fun. Amazing what can happen when you're too focused to realize what you're typing into google.

It also depends on the load ingested to start no? I vaguely recall something like that from micro.

This is true as well although in the case of Staphylococcal food poisoning it's not the bacteria but the endotoxins that make you sick. Blech. It wasn't fun whatever it was.

when i type estrogen bitch, the top 3 are 2 vet med related and one urban dictionary. Not too bad for a google search.

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve... Traditionally we would head over to my grandma's house and she would have sub sandwiches and other random small dishes of food. Then we would open a few gifts and do the traditional white elephant gift exchange. Instead, my grandma is lying in the hospital, some days in an almost comatose state just staring up into nothing. She doesn't remember who we are, she doesn't know where she is or what is going on and she isn't in any pain (as far as we can tell). My dad and aunt are going to have to decide soon if they want to place a feeding tube since she can't feed herself and is basically wasting away; it isn't worth it to be honest, but it seems so cruel to essentially let someone starve to death. Tomorrow will be hard since our traditional Christmas Eve over at grandma's won't happen, we are still getting together as a family, but it won't be the same without her. I feel like she is essentially gone already, but it is hard to watch her still hanging on in her own confused little world. 😢

The same happened with my grandfather a couple yeas ago and it is so hard watching a beloved family member deteriorate right in front of you. Thoughts are with you.

My last name is Smith-Jones*. My husband's last name is Jones. *

IF I get one more Christmas Card from Hubby's family addressed to "THE JONES' FAMILY"- I WILL EXPLODE!!!!!

HOW HARD IS IT TO WRITE "Hubby Jones & Heylodeb Smith-Jones??? **

* Names changed to protect the guilty.
** Yes, I realize I am complaining about people taking the time out of their busy schedule to send me a Christmas card and yadda-yadda-yadda. But we have been married for 5.5 years and I have been telling them very nicely....I mean my e-mail is hyphenated, my facebook is hyphenated, all correspondance to them is hyphenated. For FIVE and a HALF YEARS, my name has been HYPHENATED. Freaking passive aggressive people. Drives me bonkers.

If it makes you feel any better, my mom still spells my best friend's little sister's name incorrectly on birthday and christmas gifts. She has been coming to our house since she was an infant. Poor girl. It's become rather funny though to see what happens at each holiday. I think my mom's gotten it right maybe twice in 23 years

My own Grandmother couldn't spell my parents last name correctly. She had over 20 years of practice practice practice after my mom married my dad, but she still couldn't get it right very often.

Ugh, I'm sure that's frustrating, Heylodeb!

Let's say my husband's name is Walter Brown. My great aunt sent a Christmas card to my husband (just my husband... no mention of me, who is actually related by blood!), except his new name is Wilbur Brawn.

I also get a lot of stuff with my first name spelled incorrectly, even on facebook, which is really great...

I think it bothers me more than usual because they know its my name but for "religious" reasons decline to recognize my individuality. I am disrespecting my husband by not having the same name, ya know.....

So weird. My granddads actual name is Walter Brown. Ha

I have an aunt that can not spell my name right ever. She once got a birthday cake for my birthday one year and it was mentioned to her that she had the name spelled wrong on it and even after that she STILL spells it wrong. She will even spell it wrong on facebook while replying to me where my name is spelled out right there. It isn't like my name is awkward or has some odd spelling.

Ugh. Dumb.

It sucks when the person that you have considered your best friend for 24 years makes it obvious that she puts other friends ahead of you now. It really sucks when you already hate yourself enough without the added insult of your best friend knocking you down on her list of important people. I really hope my meds make me stop feeling again, soon.

I am sorry, that does suck 🙁 I have been through it with some former best friends a couple of years ago. It sucks, but sometimes you just have to let them go. Hang in there!

Can't find my stethoscope... It's a nice Littman Master Classic II. I got it for Christmas a few years ago. I'm afraid it's been swallowed by the vet school black hole.

I have a couple unmarried or married but kept her last name friends and they get cards addressed to Bill and Laura Bellmyer (Laura Bell and Bill Nemeyer).

Names are made up but the situation is legit. I assume they don't care but yanno.

Family dog and my dog got into a little tiff again today while I was at work. It apparently happened when my mom's friends came over. Both are okay, but it still sucks. Pretty sure the family dog is the main instigator...really not trying to place blame but he's the one I see get mouthy. Unfortunately, my mom's not as good as reading warning signals to stop anything before it starts and it's been hard to always figure out what the trigger is. They can lay next to each other on a bed, but then randomly end up in a fight. And Geordie (my dog) has been around many other dogs and never growled.

Going to ask our behavior clinic if there is a good way to work on this when I'm back at school, or even see if my mom would be willing to bring Hawk (family dog) in for a consult. I bought him an Adaptil collar in the meantime to see if that calms him at all since he's generally kind of anxious and my mom will be leaving for a few days which increases his anxiety.

Also, had a rough day at work with every animal fighting me over everything. Some patients I couldn't figure out if a "less is more" or more restraint approach was needed which just made things take longer. I also still can never tell how freaked out some clients will get about restraint in a room. I also had a really aggressive cat that bit me (no broken skin) when I wasn't even touching it and then nailed me with it's front claws near my wrist. It's a bit swollen and hurts to move my thumb at times, so that sucks too.

Tomorrow and Sundays forcasted windchill. I'm in the second coldest spot. 🙁

Thank you for posting. I was just looking at job ads in that area and might now reconsider that plan. I like winter and all, but that's cold.

I would reconsider. 👍 Seriously. I'd rather it be 100 degrees than this crap! If I had the money, I'd move southeast or west!

We had a really late start to winter this year. First real snow that stuck around was in December. Since that day, I don't think it's gotten above 35 degrees. 90% of the days have been below 5 degrees(temp, not windchill!) Was high 20's today and everything was melting and it felt like a heatwave. people running around without jackets on!

Then again, I'd rather deal with cold than heat+humidity any day. MN >>> Gulf coast.
Extreme cold where cars don't start and powerlines break from ice and you have to wear 5+ layers outside? Not me! I look like the abominable snowman when I'm doing chores, haha! I'm round you can only see my eyes and even then, sometimes they are frozen shut.

Is that even real?????? Sheesh. I'm from Africa and live in NorCal - those #s don't even compute in my brain. *shiver* how often does this happen?

I have been with my boyfriend for three years. My family cannot get it wrapped around their heads that his name is spelled M-A-R-C (name changed to protect the guilty). I can send them a text that says "Meet Marc and I ______" and they will respond "Ok great see you and Mark then." I just freaking typed it! just copy what I said! 3 years is long enough to work this out

Negative 74???? I thought that was only possible in the laboratory. Can you see the electrons stand still?

A few times a year here. Usually doesn't go below -35 windchill, occasionally we get this crap.
In the last 15 years, the University in my town has only shut down because of weather 3-4 times and it was because of -70 winchill. You can't spend 10 minutes outside with skin exposed or you could get frostbite. Pretty much the whole town freezes in place, with only essential people leaving their houses for work. A lot of vehicles don't start. The poor dairy cows get chapped teats, even with using powdered dip instead of iodine based. Salting/sanding the roads doesn't do anything at that temp. Frozen pipes. Fun times.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind being in California right now. (I'm just really glad I'm not able to do chores right now. Feel really bad for the people that are)

Everyone in the area, STAY WARM!

I've been asking my brother for a WEEK now to please take a look at my Kindle for me. In fact, I started telling him more than a month ago that it needed to be fixed. He blew me off all week and then this morning, an hour before he was supposed to leave to head home, he said "Oh yeah, I need to look at your Kindle." Now he's encountering problems with it that he doesn't have time to fix, so my tablet is going to continue to be a brick for another YEAR until I see him again next Christmas. During which time he'll probably blow me off until the last minute yet again. 😡

Day 2 of crate rest and my dog is already driving me nuts. I keep rotating toys and bones in and out of the crate and she loses interest in them after 10 minutes. Even PB or frozen yogurt stuffed toys aren't keeping her attention for very long. She spills her water every 20 minutes and yips every hour on the hour to remind me that she's still "stuck." AGH!
