She doesn't even really know how to text. We talk on the phone a lot though

My mom learned how to text and email because we started playing Words With Friends and it got her used to using the phone and typing on it. She texted me a picture the other day... this from a woman that doesn't know how to use a computer. She's 60. I bet your mom could learn.

My sibs and I got our mom a tablet for her birthday and she's a mess. She meant to take a picture, but took a video instead. So, when she uploaded the "picture" to FB (which she did all by herself) we saw one second of her dog, and then her putting the tablet on a chair and the resulting blackness for minutes on end. Now she only uses it as a Kindle, which she already has 😕

My grandmother has been complaining that she wants to take pictures with her camera but can't find film for sale anywhere. So for Christmas my mom bought her a digital camera - one of those really basic simple point and shoot cameras. Figured it wouldn't take too much effort to show her how to use it since she's used a regular film camera for years. After she opened it and was being shown how to use it I heard her exclaim "But where do I look???" I glanced over and saw her with the camera pointed directly at her face, trying to look into the lens to take a picture . . . :smack:

I'm pretty fortunate that my mom is a computer programmer and at nearly 65 years old she's often the one teaching ME how to do things on the computer!

My dad is super tech savvy. My mom on the other hand...I'm her "geek squad" largely because I know what to google when there's a problem.

I've caught the cough and sore throat that's been going around. I don't actually feel too horrible (yet, anyway), but I'm on call for the next week at work and I'm pretty sure when I answered the phone just now something inhuman sounding came out. At least no one usually comes to the lab hounding me for faster results when I'm obviously sick like this.

OK, so here is my solution to the flu. It has not failed me in 8 years, so I am going to share it. When you first feel it coming on, squeeze three oranges and 1 grapefruit preferably with pulp. Note it has to be fresh, not store bought and pasteurized. Drink 3 times a day and by the 3rd or 4th day, its gone. As soon as I get the sniffles, I am hitting those oranges. Knock on wood, haven't had anything in 8 years. I am also an athlete and a picky healthy eater so I think that helps too.

I usually pound emergen-c. Also got turned on to astragalus which is some plant that boosts your immune system. I start taking it as soon as I feel like I'm getting sick or if a lot of people around me get sick - it works really well.

we talked about astragalus in toxicology... and not because of its immune boosting properties 😛

I know she can. She's very very smart. I just doubt she wants to lol. I keep asking her to text. That way I can share silly little moments with her. But she has a tracphone (sp?) too and it might use up all her minutes.

Echo that. My mom is 62, and I've taught her to use Skype and text, it just took some patience and be willing to learn on her part. We're also really close, she's my best friend, as cheesy as that sounds.
Same. My mom is my very best friend. And I'm so like her. My step dad will watch us at dinner and we'll go about things the same way and he'll be like "like mother like daughter" or pick on us because we are super quick to defend each other. Lol

I had mentioned about my grandfather having surgery to remove an intestinal blockage about a month ago. Turns out he actually has colon cancer. My mom went down to visit him over Christmas break since he was still in a rehabilitation center from the surgery...she didn't want us to go down and see him since he's still super tired and can only have visitors for a short period of time. I did manage to talk to him for a little on Facetime, which was nice. However, my mom just called to update me that he has MRSA or some other type of staph infection. Now I'm going to be dreading phone calls from her over the next couple of weeks.

My parents finally got smartphones a couple of years ago. Wish I could undo that. 😛

I know its below 0 degrees outside, but there is NO reason to heat the apartment up to 80! I'm pretty sure I started sweating during the walk from the front door to the thermostat...grr.

Sounds like my situation last year 😉 I woke up sweating CONSTANTLY.

My heat, which broke during the first cold snap, is broken again during the one week Alabama will be totally below freezing. I think it's sentient. Space heaters and electric blankets seem to be working fine for now, dunno if I want to pay to fix it again or just wait a bit and have it replaced.

Sister's boyfriend's dad flipped his tractor trailer early this morning. They've got him on a ventilator and propofol. MRI is sh0wing severe brainstem damage. Damn it, damn it, damn it. I don't know him, but I know and like the boyfriend, so I'm just torn up for him and my sister. The man's got a wife and a few younger children too. Life sucks.

Sometimes, I really really hate people and reaffirm the fact that animals are better to be around.

Pre-vet asking fellow pre-vets to diagnose a friend's horse over Facebook. 'cause if the vet doesn't have an answer, surely a bunch of college girls will. :bang:

Ugh, I have a skin infection and have to take Doxycycline. It has made me sick the last couple of days 🙁 I am turned off from frosted flakes for a while now.

Weird, one of my buddies just got diagnosed with folliculitis and is on antibiotics, too.

I wish my family knew how to appropriately deliver bad news. Finding out via Facebook first that your grandma is now in hospice is not cool (even if I did know it was going to happen eventually). And once I did finally become the next person to be told about my grandma, a text message is not an appropriate way to tell me either. It isn't that hard to pick up the phone and call.

Anyway, my grandma is now in hospice, they estimate she only has a few days left. I wish I could be there, but there is no way. 🙁

So sorry DVM. =(

A few months ago, I found out one of my aunts died when my sister posted "RIP Aunt X" as her status. Didn't get a call from anyone in my family until 2 days later. So sweet of them.
Sorry about your Grandma 🙁 You got to see her over break, right?

Yeah, I am afraid that is how I will find out about my grandma when she does pass. It is even worse that they did it like this because I explained to them while I was home to please call me when things happen and update me. I told them I don't want to hear via FB or text message, I would like a phone call and they still didn't listen. Even my sister who lives out of state agreed with me. Oh well, there isn't much I can do about it, I just wish that they would listen.

I did get to see my grandma over break so that was nice. She was already rather sick when I was home. She didn't remember me and was really going downhill quite quickly, so this really didn't come as a shock, if anything they should have put her in hospice sooner, but my aunt wasn't quite ready to.

I am so frustrated with the rescue my foster dog is with. I feel like they do absolutely nothing to promote their dogs. When they have an event its like a bunch of dogs thrown together and people have no idea its even an adoption event. I had her for 5 months now and she really needs a home. So I contacted them about it asking if there was anything we could do to get her out there or if there was another foster. I got an email back that she had no solution and I could contact other rescues.

I originally found her and got a call that she was on the euth list. So I contacted rescues and found one to ally with. I signed papers that relinquished her to them essentially. I've also had to supply everything for her. So I don't know if in their mind she isn't actually theirs. I'm just exhausted and worn out.

Are you allowed to find a home for her yourself and then just have them apply and pay through the rescue?
I have found excellent homes for my fosters through posting fliers at the vet hospital and through craigslist (it's really not that sketchy). You can also post the dog on facebook and ask people to share, or put on and "adopt me" vest and walk her around town.

BTW, totally agree with you that they should be supporting you through this!

Thanks . Question though how do you cajole hospitals into letting you post a flyer?

Really bad lower abdominal pain for the last 4 days (feels like last the time I had ruptured ovarian cysts). I can't fall asleep because I'm in pain so I end up staying up really late until exhaustion forces me to sleep. I wake up with bad headaches because I'm barely sleeping at night. Walking hurts, laying down hurts, tylenol is doing nothing. This sucks.

This sounds awful, hedgie 🙁 Do you have time to see a doctor?

Heating pad and a stiff pillow shoved into your abdomen. Then call a doctor.

I just posted them around the teaching hospital at school. But if there is a vet you take your animals to or volunteer at they would probably let you put up a flyer as well. Local/small pet stores are another good place for flyers as well as coffee shops.

I took down the flyers when my most recent foster was adopted but I must have left one somewhere that I can't find... every so often I still get emails about her!

If you do use craigslist, there are some VERY basic html codes you can use to make embedded pictures and big colorful text. If you don't know anyone that knows super beginner html, PM me and I can walk you through it or make the ad for you.

ETA: This rescue has a ton of good info for marketing animals; it is aimed at pit bulls and shelters but I think the "writing bios" "photography" and "business cards" sections are applicable to any situation.

Stupid rant, but my headphones are missing and I have a flight in a day. I have no idea where they went. So frustrating.

My accident has me totally wigged out about life. I think I need to go back to my psychiatrist...
I worry about EVERYTHING now. If I don't hear from my boyfriend right away, I freak out because I think something happened to him.
I don't want my parents to leave because I am afraid something will happen to me when I am alone.
Also decided to sketch my plans to stay in MI for the summer and do research- I really just want to go home.
Ugh...

Deep breaths. This is normal. But if you think you would benefit from talking to someone, do it.

If you ever need to just vent to someone who knows what it's like, I'm here. Just focus on healing though.

Decided to go for a walk after class since it was sunny and not unbearably cold for once, during which I slipped on ice and made mincemeat of my hand. I ended up leaving a nice trail of blood on the way back to my car and effectively scared the crap out of a few people during my trip to the store for bandaging supplies. Next time I'm just going to vegetate on the couch.

Found out this morning about a cool opportunity in public health at CDC. Today is the day registration closes. When I talked to the very nice lady at CDC she told me my school had 10 spots reserved by the organizers for faculty and student attendees, but that they had had no contact from anyone after sending e-mails since MAY. I found out on Facebook from vet friends at another school.

There are less than 10 MPH/DVM kids. All of us would have gone if we'd known. How did they drop this ball?
*headdesk*

My advisor is going to try to get me the $ to go. At this late a date though its like 900 just to fly there and back.
