My senior Dobie took a spill this evening on the wood floor in the kitchen (he gets overly excited for food). Since eating, he's been laying in his bed...which is very uncharacteristic of him. He went outside and seemed to be moving around fine--roommate is a 4VM and did a quick pain assessment on his hips, back, and legs...he only seemed a little sensitive. I've set up my laptop on the floor beside his bed and I'm trying my best to not get emotional, but this dog is my everything and when he suffers, I suffer. If he's not feeling more sprightly in the morning, it's off to the vet we go. I just hope he's as comfortable as possible tonight (he has an ortho-bed + a pillow to prop his head on). My poor old man...😢
 
It makes me sad that people think we are just trying to rip them off. Especially as I am most likely going into emergency medicine, where the costs tend to be higher.

Le sigh. Emergency is on my radar too. I loved being an e- tech most people tended to actually care. There were the couple like always but people didn't come unless they deeply cared about the animal and wanted to do something.
 
After the APVMA symposium last year, emergency medicine really caught my attention. Can I ask what kind of information you guys have on it?

Staying on topic, crazy long drives to get to interviews.
 
Lack of owner compliance with simple issues. Why is this such a huge thing.

If your animal has surgery and is given an e-collar, THEY SHOULD WEAR IT. We've had three dogs turn up in emergency in the past month alone that have self eviscerated post-spay because of noncompliance with the e-collar and not giving them their pain medication as directed. Another one that ate off its casted leg, and plenty that have chewed out their stitches. All because owners think the cone is "mean" or because they didn't think the animal "looked like it was hurting". Somehow it's still our fault when the dog doesn't survive or needs additional treatment.

All we can seem to hope is that they learn from this and listen next time. I love the animals though, it's not their fault it's happening, and usually the owners seem to have had good intentions, just frustrating.

This. This is why I have a hard time dealing with many horse people. Happens with some small animal people too of course, but just basic horse care is so much more expensive than small animal care. I will never understand how horse people can spend thousands on new tack, show fees, trailering, fancy new show clothes, even crap like jewelry with their horse's name on it, and then turn around and complain that keeping their horse alive, healthy, and comfortable is too expensive. Just blows my mind.

My personal favorite is the "Well we took it off when we got home and she didn't chew on the cast, so we figured it was okay to leave her alone without the e-collar for 8+ hours while we were at work."

Over the years I've come to designate those people as riders NOT horseman. Big difference in my mind and experience. For example, it blows my mind the amount accomplished riders that can't tell you what their horses eat or how they are shod or even which side/leg is causing the horse to be head-bobbing lame. It's no wonder that they don't understand vet care or expenses, but ignorance is not a good enough excuse.

Really?!?! I wanna come do emcc where you are!!! So many people I see in emergency DONT want to do anything. The amount of phone calls I get of "my dog/cat is struggling to breathe... where are you? 10 minutes away? Oh thats too far, he/she doesnt like the car... oh you dont think I shoulf wait til morning? Are you sure? Well, I guess I coulf see what I can do" pretty much sums up my interactions with people in person and over the phone the last couple of months!
 
Feels sunshine, all the feels.

Dog undergoing heartworm treatment, owner didn't confine her so she probably threw a clot. "How much benadryl should I give my dog? Why? Well she's turning blue, I think it's because I gave her those calm-down-pills (acepromazine) so she'd stop running all over the place. It'll pass, I think I'll should her throw them back up. No I don't want to bring her in you'll just charge me too much and give her more bad medicine (????). I'm just going to give her some benadryl, that'll take care of it, how much should I give a dog her size? Oxygen? Why do you charge for that? I'm just going to wait till morning and take her back to her vet, he can fix this." It was at that point I could hear the dog doing the foamy gurgles in the background. We were TRYING to inform the woman that there was another emergency clinic not five minutes away from the address she had given our receptionist. I'm sure the dog died and in her mind it was somehow the vet's vault for giving her "bad medicine".

Also the person who called asking how long it should take for the turnip greens she'd been giving her dog to get rid of the anticoagulant rat bait poisoning. All of my whut on that one. It had been two days, the dogs gums were bleeding. Apparently she had read on a forum that it was "the same thing as taking the vitamin K pills" but cheaper. Didn't believe us that it wasn't working/wasn't going to work and hung up.

It's tough loving an animal this much sometimes, isn't it? I barely slept. As for his condition this morning, he was hesitant to get up to go outside. He dragged his left hind leg for 2 seconds before putting full weight on it. But he walks with a noticeable limp. He nearly jumped up for breakfast an hour later. Still limping. I have an appointment at 3 just to get him checked out and on pain meds if needed.

Oh don't get me wrong we had our share of idiots. 80% of the clients that walk though the door are good. That has no relation to the idiots on the phone. I can deal with dumb people on the phone. In person I wish to punch them. It was rare we didn't do a surgery on a dog that needed it. This excludes the ancient Great Danes and bloats. Most ended up euthanized. The only one I can remember was a Boston that needed an enucleation we pumped the poor dog on pain meds and he went to the regular vet in the am for surgery.

Glad he's better. Hopefully its nothing a few days of Metacam can't remedy.
She's much better, thanks! The infectious cyst is totally gone after some antibiotics. Having a Pittie, a MCT is always a fear, but I make myself crazier than I have too :-D
 
I have the most horrid headache... I think it is a mix of caffeine withdrawal (have recently stopped drinking this), sinus headache (starting to get a stuffed nose) and migraine (was seeing little flashing lights) all rolled into one. :inpain:

When I quite caffeine 4 months ago, I thought I was dying from the withdrawal headache, but it was definitely worth it in the end.

Dog barfed up his dinner within a half hour of eating it. Hope he just ate it too quickly and it's not a foreign body. He's really good at chewing up his Greenie's and not gulping them, but you never know ( and yes, I supervise). Gave him 1/2 his food about 10 minutes ago and so far it's stayed down.

Going with vomiting since it was active abdominal contractions, but the food wasn't digested or anything like that. And we're still in the clear, so I think he might have been feeling off for some reason. I do have the bf on watch tomorrow morning while I'm at the shelter volunteering.


He has also decided that frozen poops are the best thing ever which is super gross.

My grandma passed away unexpectedly this morning, and it was a pretty big shock. A couple other things happened today as well - dogs and cats I know passing away or not having a home anymore. My kitty is having health problems and I don't know how bad it is, because his heart condition is too serious for him to get the diagnostic tests. Tomorrow I have a vet school interview, and I'm feeling totally unfocused and more nervous than usual.
 
Hang in there. Deep breaths. It's ok to be you. You don't have to pretend to be all peachy. Life happens. Just be real. I'm so sorry you're going through all this. Just one foot I front of the other.

I'm so sorry for your loss Willow. Just do your best tomorrow, and like Abney said, you don't have to pretend that everything is perfect.

My rant: finally catching the cold or whatever that is going around and all I want to do is nap but I have a test on Cardiology on Monday and Pharm the next week and I'm super behind.
 
I'm so sorry for everyone's losses recently and the tough times 🙁

My gripe is small in comparison but semester just started and between a chem a bio an eng and an elective and being short staffed at work it's gonna be a looooooong semester.
 
I had no idea it was so ridiculously expensive to have things engraved. $100+ to engrave a few lines on a $15 item?!?! 😱
 
So that vet cost thread died down. However it got restarted and now people are complaining about the cost of tail amputations. One lady got her dogs done for $49 from her cow vet. :dead: Oh and diagnostic equipment is unnecessary when you can use the wait and see approach.
 
I log onto Facebook today and the first thing that pops up is an article posted by my cousin, who I am not on good terms with, titled " 5 things vets say that aren't true" :smack:
I wanted so badly to go medieval on her but my mom just told me it isn't worth it, which is true but I was super ticked about it. Ugh! The stupidity never ends...
 
My rescue pup I adopted in November didn't quite work out with me being gone all day with classes (tried to break out of her kennel, then was destructive when left out). I met someone from the rescue yesterday so she can find the right home for her. Someone who will be with her most of the day due to her separation anxiety. She was such a sweet girl, but it was the right decision. Beamer boy is doing very well with her not being here. Rave: It is 55 out today in CoMo and we went on a great hike! He's currently passed out on my bed with me while I study for upcoming exams.
 
i somehow managed to break OneNote. it refuses to accept word documents and pdfs claiming "the file you have selected cannot be inserted as a printout. there may be a problem with the file, or you may not have the right program installed. you must first install a program that can open and print this file type, and then try again." this would be more believable if they weren't pdfs and .docs. grumble 😡
 
Strep throat is awful. I feel like I am swallowing glass shards. Make it stopppp.
 
Having classes when the temperature with the windchill is -45 should not be allowed. My face felt like it was about to fall off as I walked from one side of campus to the other :wtf:

I had a total brain fart moment the other day and signed up for a 15k one of of the days of the exotic symposium we're hosting in April...the one I've been working on fundraising for since September...fail.
 
*sigh* Between the leaky tire on the rental car, white knuckle driving on I65 to get to IND airport, and my cancelled flight home... Karma better swing the other way as far as acceptances go :boom:

:uhno: i would die on the spot. or spend the rest of winter crying in my bed. holy moly no way. i'm sorry i "complained" i was cold this morning in the caribbean (it was a little chilly, i had 2 fleeces on in class...)

MN. That's a drift against her door, not the actual amount of snow we have. 😉 I suppose we have about 12" or so on flat land?

A lot of people don't believe me when I swear their winters are way worse than mine. In Canada, everything must be worse. 😛 (though MB is probably very similar...won't be moving to the tundra, that's for sure!)
