I don't even know where to post this, lol. I've been rejected 3 times after interviewing including my IS (VMRCVM). Well, 2 were waitlisted but everyone gets put on the wait list for those if they don't get accepted. My IS gives a large amount of spots to OOS IMO considering that it's shared between 2 schools in the first place. I've spent hundreds of dollars flying around the country to get slapped in the face every time. It's pretty much like saying you look good on paper but you suck IRL. This whole experience has made me not even want to be a vet. I hate the way this whole process is run. It makes me feel like I'm a complete loser. Ugh.

I was waitlisted at VMRCVM and it's my IS too. I think their interview method is ridiculous and I don't really see how it's helpful to assess applicants, but oh well I guess. VMRCVM was my last choice anyway, so just hoping to get off the waitlists at Auburn or LSU. If not, I'm relocating and applying again next year.

Really? I think you just have to be an independent and move a year before classes start. You have to get a job and pay taxes to the new state but I think that's about it for most places. Maybe get a new license and stuff like that.

Move somewhere, get a job there, and don't go to school for a year. That equals residency at most schools, being there for a year for non- school purposes

Yeah, it doesn't have to. You can always reapply to VMRCVM and sit down with them and ask what it was about the interview they didn't like so you can do better next time. It's just really my last choice school, I much prefer Auburn or even LSU so applying as a resident to either of those schools would be much better for me.

To the best of my knowledge that's not true to start, but when you apply to professional school you are automatically considered independent. You can move to another state, and gain residency there before applying. For most schools this requires living in the state for a year before matriculation working full time. You may be able to go to school part time depending on the state, but your purpose of living there cannot be to go to school.
This would allow you to gain residency in a state with low in state tuition and apply as an in state resident.
Also, have you posted in the what are my chances thread? Done any file reviews with the schools you haven't been accepted to? That might help you get some in sight into why you aren't getting over that final hurdle.

well, you made it to interviews, so that's something. And you can do file reviews how to improve for the next year. so don't give up hope.

Mmm I've done one file review @ western. I'm waiting for the other ones to start doing them. I'm hoping I learn some stuff to improve later.
I think the tech one upset me most because it was solely based on how your interview went. It's easier to improve your application than it is yourself. And you're right about the everyone being put on the wait list.. I know everyone at Tech is but I'm not sure about Western.

I'm attending an undergrad university in TX but I'm from CA. My mother's residency is in CA. I'm only 20, have a part-time job, off campus housing and a car I registered in TX. I've just recently became a resident for tuition purposes if I were to apply to TAMU next year. I had to prove that I lived here with utility bills, pay stubs, grocery reciepts, insurance, etc. This next year my mom will not be claiming me for taxes, so I will have to also prove that I did not recieve financial help from her. I did have to stay here over the summer and was only able to go home during winter for 2 weeks. So, yeah it can suck but I'm hoping I'll have a greater chance of attending TAMU bc they take an extremely large amount of IS applicants and their IS tuition is fairly low. However, this is just the residency rules in TX. I know in CA and some other states it is MUCH easier to establish residency. I had to jump through a crap ton of hoops.. It can be a difficult process, but hopefully worth all the trouble in the end. Hope this helps some! 🙂

Found out that my favorite teacher from high school passed away yesterday at the age of 42. It's been over 10 years since I left high school, but I'm super sad. He was one of those teachers that really cared about his students and about teaching. I contacted him a couple years ago when I decided to go back to school to do my pre-reqs since he taught chem and physics in high school.. he was super encouraging and gave me pointers on getting back into the science groove.. Blah.. It's amazing how quickly life can change in a blink of an eye.. really need to start making every day count and enjoying the process!

Definitely was my least favorite of all the schools I interviewed and I despised the interview, but looking at the finances I've been thinking if I were to get off the waitlist I'd seriously consider sacrificing my happiness for four years just to be in less debt.

Haha same. I've never been a fan of Tech, and when I decided on vet school and realized the vet school for Virginia was there, I was so mad. It's never been my #1 just because of that, and I also don't like their program as much as the programs elsewhere. So I wasn't too upset about being waitlisted other than the fact that it would have been a nice option to have.

as Hokie alum, can i ask why you have blacksburg/virginia tech/vmrcvm so much?

I am also an alumni of Virginia Tech- I loved it there. But I also realized that the program was not a good fit for me, either. As much as I would have loved to spend another 4 years in Blacksburg, I am enjoying the program at Mizzou more than I think I would have at VT. Granted, I got waitlisted last year there, as well, so the decision was made for me.

I don't hate tech (though I did go to UVA, so I'm supposed to?), I just don't like some things about their vet program. Also despised my whole interview experience there and didn't feel like they were remotely interested in getting to know me or selling their school/program to me.

gotcha - the most annoying part of the acceptance path to me back in the day (ugh i'm so old!!) was the emphasis they placed on research. it seemed like you practically had to be the 1st author on a ground breaking research project to get much of a glance from them (and this is from someone who worked in a research lab for 2 years! just nothing crazy). thank goodness (except maybe financially) that I didn't get in though, i have spent 3 of the most amazing years ever here in the caribbean. wouldn't trade them for anything.

I've just never been a fan of the place. So many people at my high school were in love with it and wanted to go there, and I just didn't get it. They'd say things like, "well if you visit it, you'll understand!" So I did, and wasn't impressed. It's just not my cup of tea; I don't like mountains, and I don't like grey stone buildings. The vet school is extremely nice, but I don't think I want to go somewhere that does tracking. As someone who wants to do zoo med, I don't feel like their program has that many opportunities for me to get early experience with what I want to do.

i tease (sort of), i've enjoyed a good bit of vet school and am liking this term so far (for the most part). i'm just not sure how i'm going to merge my grand goals and passions together to formulate a fulfilling life...at least not without marrying either a multimillionaire or winning the lottery 😉 [the latter sounds a lot easier and less emotionally stressful haha]

I am about as drained as I have ever been in vet school to this point. The only thing getting me through is the countdown to clinics. I'm giving a tour to some 4-H kids next week; I'm hoping some of their enthusiasm will rub off.

We've had iced over roads for two weeks now. It's awful. But at this point I'd think we'd all be pretty good winter drivers if we weren't already. Yet, we got like a quarter inch snowfall overnight, and everyone's driving like they're senile 80 year olds... 😡

Haha no way!!! I am that kid is is ALWAYS optimistic and can sometimes be annoyingly positive. I am happy most of the time. I LOVE LOVE LOVE vet school. (I realize I'm only first year, but this attitude is ingrained in my DNA). Just gotta find your silver linings/passions/happy place 😀

That sucks… no question.
But, I would suggest not to look at this as a reason to beat yourself up, but a chance to improve.
There is in fact a possibility that you aren't making the best impression in interviews. This is something that is definitely correctible.
Does your school have mock interviews? Try those.
Or a speaking class?
Or maybe just write down the questions you remember and have someone you trust "interview" you and give you feedback.
Videotape yourself giving the answers….
Conveying confidence is an acquired skill in public speaking… and knowing there is one thing you can definitely improve is actually a great plus for trying again next year.

I left for the airport at 10 this morning and after my first flight was delayed 3 hours everything got screwed. Now I won't make it back in time for our first class tomorrow, and also won't get any sleep tonight. On one hand that class is the one where attendance counts...on the other hand, it's the class that we don't have exams for (intro to vet med). I guess I have all night to study neuro now...
Also, I really wish they would turn the music off, or at least down. It's making it really hard to concentrate.

Yesterday was a sad day. My clinic does a lot of work with various rescues and we had the beagle rescue bring in this small terrified beagle that was like a 2 on the body scale. He had been dumped at the park last weekend the rescue was having a play date at. They brought him in because he was severely emaciated but he was refusing food too. We kept the dog after the appointment so we could get rads and blood and such and found out he had severe internal injuries. The doctors believed he had a ruptured diaphragm (big enough hole to put your hand through) which had part of the dog's intestines in the thoracic cavity, only one lung filling with air, the gallbladder down by the bladder, and his stomach was full of air. He had no exterior injuries suggesting he was hit by a car, like no lacerations or broken bones, so we're leaning more towards abuse. We had to put him down. I hate people 🙁

A while ago somebody posted a video showing their vet school totally decked out in dr. seuss decorations for something (graduation?) I think it was an international school. I want to show the video to someone and cannot for the life of me find it with my search-fu. 🙁

i'm on ECCM rotations this week meaning that students are in the hospital from 5p-8:30pish and then on call over night. at 6:30a, i got a call from the technician about a patient who presented but as stable and they wanted to know if we wanted to come in. in a sleepy stupor i was like ummmm (its graded) so he told me to ask the other students. general consensus was NO, so i called back and the doctor said oh we just called you in case you realy wanted to see an emergency. we dont need you, staff comes in in 15 minutes so enjoy your day. whyyyy did you call me if you didnt want me. so sleepy1!!!

My impression from the article is that it is technically legal, so they had to uphold the law, but that they should really, strongly, definitely start on the way to changing that sht ASAP. It really all comes down to semantics. The law says that you cannot photograph or film anyone who is nude or partially nude without their consent. Personally I think they could easily have argued that photographing underneath someone's clothing makes it a partially nude photo, but the courts chose to argue the opposite.
It just makes me so angry. Someone could strut through downtown Boston fully naked and you'd be arrested for taking their picture, but it's totally okay to shove your hand between someone's legs and snap away without them knowing? Where the heck is the logic in that?
So yeah, if anyone is planning on being in Massachusetts any time soon, don't wear a skirt. I bet Go-Pro cameras are flying off the shelves right now.

Sleep is never wasted. Sleep is delightful. I say this as someone for whom coffee is useless though. It just makes me physically jittery while mentally still exhausted and unfocused.

badness happened yesterday afternoon and i'm pretty sure a person that i look up to like crazy is mad at me 🙁 parents dog has been weird and neurologic over the last week - MRI yesterday afternoon showed diffuse edema and swelling of all brain and neck CNS areas. possibly something congenital, neurologist has never seen anything like it before 🙁 HBC patient tonight with severe pulmonary contusions. stabilized to an extent and then the owner came forward and elected euthanasia (totally not a wrong choice, just a bummer). came home to flooded kitchen - the ceiling is leaking (luckily my landlord and his friend were hanging out at the complex and were able to come check it out). sigh!!

You have my sympathy. Mine are a bit more personal in nature but still feels a bit like the sky is crashing down all at once.
