They need like a simple guide to diabetes. I mean, it really is important that it would be nice to have a basic guide instead of hundreds of pages of information that you will barely remember, of which I am sure some of it isn't important to diagnosis, management and treatment. I remember last semester at Edinburgh they had a ton of information on diabetes and when it was all said and done I could barely remember any of it.

Damn it FB friend, why on earth would you share a link of a photo montage of a dog with bone cancer's last day, including heartbreaking captions?

It's things like that that make me think I won't hack it in vet med emotionally... I cried for around 30 minutes about that dog. I've yet to shadow and I honestly don't know how I'll handle an euthanasia. :scared:

I told my mother that at least as a people doctor, I wouldn't care as much. I'm on the fence right now.

You are allowed to cry I used to cry a lot and still choke up quite a bit. The first euthanasia I saw was a horse and those was 10x more dramatic than a small animal. I was told the only rule is that you can not cry more than the owners.

Everyone else has covered everything else.

I was taking trash out for a huge community event at school and the dumpster is behind necropsy. Well they were cranking a horse out of a trailer and the owners were bawling.Well I lost it as I heaved the trash into the dumpster and shuffled back to the building. Finished up and drove to the barn to simply hug my horse.

My apartment building has tons of cats hanging around it. I don't know if they're pets or strays. Either way, people are either intentionally feeding them or leaving their trash in front of their doors, drawing them into the courtyard.

I had to wrangle one by the scruff and throw it out my door tonight when I was dropping my groceries off. I really don't want to call animal control, but I also don't want to get bit or scratched by one of them.

Step one: check bloodwork and urinalysis. If glucose high, start on insulin. Step two: check lots and lots of BGs until normal. Step three: suggest additional things like diet changes and urine cultures and listen to owner to laugh while declining them.

Just google aaha diabetes mgmt guide for dogs and cats. Step by step including what insulin to use and all monitoring. Pretty much 90% of things get declined including the insulin 90% of the time, but whatevs.

Guess who sprains her neck rolling over in bed because she didn't want to get up and go to the gym...that's right this girl. And then the pain made me pass out. That was a weird experience. Happened last week but still having difficulty getting comfortable.

Tried to donate plasma today, but couldn't because my pulse was too high. 🙁 It's always on the high side, and I even thought to forgo my morning coffee before going in (a big sacrifice for me) so that wouldn't bump it up! They require it to be below 100 bpm, and my first reading was 101. Seriously????? They gave me five minutes to rest, which seemed an awfully short amount of time to me, and then it was 116! Curse my mild anxiety when it come to new experiences...

poor piglet came to school today to have some small lumps evaluated and ended up getting herself a diagnostic mass removal. better have those veggies at the ready to make up for it tonight!

my tech thinks I can read minds and it's really irritating. The tech's friend's dog ate something they called Mexican stomach pills. I have NO idea what that is. or how many he ate. Or even when the dog ate them. Also the friend is now at work. And no one is home. And he wants me to work magic to get the dog here and know how to treat.

You came to work without your magic 8 ball and your magic wand? That was just completely irresponsible on your part 😛

But honestly, that's probably the most frustrating thing in the world when clients come in and give stories like this. Must be even more frustrating with a co worker...

It's because it's his friend. i'm just supposed to make things happen. Had it been any other patient, he would have told them to come in.

I think this tech needs to go bye-bye.

Gunners. Seriously. I care a lot about grades and expect a lot of myself too, but the key difference is that I'm not constantly whining about a point or two. I'm so tired of the whining.

Everything I've touched this week has had badness. HCM, osteosarcoma, CRF, mast cell tumors, melanoma, severe pain of unknown origin, and pyometra were all represented. Tired of having the quality of life/euthanasia talk. Guest appearances included heart murmurs, sarcoptes, unidentifiable tumors, anal gland abscesses, mammary tumors, bilateral subsolar abscesses, and landshark-itis.
and not a single well puppy visit.

Is it still a full moon?!

Sitting in the HUP ER with a million sick people because I had to go and stay late and get a formalin splash in my eye after occ med was closed. I'm incredibly worried about permanent corneal damage. And I have a feeling it will be hours until I'm seen, making it kind of pointless. :-/

Had an endoscopy today. Woke up from anesthesia crying and freaking out. I HAD to know my SpO2 and demanded to look at it..don't know why I was so concerned about it (maybe because I was hyperventilating). While under, I had dreams of doing endoscopies on dogs. So weird. I have some metaplasia in my esophagus, which the doctor didn't seem concerned about and said it wasn't large enough to be considered Barret's esophagus. I told my boyfriend about it and he is worried that it is pre-cancerous...so now I am freaking out. Ugh. The doctor didn't seem to care..he just told me to come to my follow up and wait for the biopsies to come back.

One of my roommates is just a dingus.

I'm living with my friend and another girl, and we've made a pretty fair system that we rotate cleaning duties once a week- my friend, then the other girl, then me.

So, last week was fall break and I was at home; and it was my friend's week. My friend and the other girl were there for the majority of fall break- and I saw some pictures of them carving pumpkins and the like over break, having a good time. I was slated to come back to the apartment Monday, but my dad just got a job in Florida, so they wanted me there to get some of my crap out of my old room.

It was situation normal until I came back today from my longest day of classes (8-7).

I waltz on in and it looks like a tornado struck. The innards of pumpkins past laid languidly in the bottom of a trash bag, which at this point was around 5 days old and had this pungent odor (I liken the smell to too much Axe body spray on smelly gym socks). There's pots and pans all stuffed into the double sink and there's sauce from God knows what all over the floor and the counters were cluttered and there's no silverware because it's all in the sink. Dry pumpkin seeds are littered on the carpet in the common room, and just when I thought it couldn't get any more crazy- the dingus roommate deemed the chairs I moved into the apartment on move-in day unsuitable and used the four of them to block my door to my bedroom.

I move the chairs into my room, which is probably around 150-200 square feet, and I edge my way out to at least tidy up, despite the fact that it would normally be the other girl's week to clean. I look at the sign that shows whose week it is because it also tells you if the dishes in the dishwasher are clean or not.

I noticed instantly that the other girl erased her name, and wrote mine.

So, I ran three trash bags outside, I'm running the dishwasher again, and I'm just telling myself that she'll be out of my hair soon enough. But seriously, what the hell is wrong with people?

Sigh... When you're down to your last pair of new contacts except for the ones that have been sitting in your eye for who knows how many months, and you don't have the time to go to the freaking optometrists... Or figure out how to best maximize the use of your health insurance to cover costs

ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME??!?!?!?!?! Sorry I really need somewhere to rant.. So I FINALLY get home late tonight from a day of competing in freezing rain in an ongoing tornado watch and hectic flight schedules to urine and poop ALL over my apartment. My puppy was out of her designated gated area and my other pup was in the wrong room. I specifically had every little detail written on my enormous white board for each animal. The most important part is feeding time bc my oldest and grumpiest dog gets jealous of the others eating near him and snaps if they try to eat his food. Nope. My dog sitter left 2 open bowls of kibble just laying on the floor with 3 dogs running loose! And what do I see? Just a small bite wound on my puppy's ear and blood drops on the floor and on my bed. SERIOUSLY???? I pay her GOOD money to stop by and let out my pups 2-3 times a day and feed them twice per day. I had her come over the night before I left so I could explain everything bc my system/schedule can be a little hectic. Anyway, She texted me at 9 tonight saying everyone was fed and walked. I came home at 11:30 and it looks like no one has been there the entire day, maybe even 2! I just wanted to come home, love on my pups, take a hot shower and sleep in my comfy bed. Instead, I had to clean all the floors, take everyone out on a walk, wash everything that had urine and blood on it (including my bedspread and sheets) and get ready to sleep on the couch. I just don't even know what to think. Worst part is.. She's a good friend and she just got a vet assistant job. I can't even.ughhhhhh

There are so many levels of unacceptable in this post it makes me angry for you. If you're not willing to take the extra steps necessary to care for some pets, then don't offer to do it. Grrr. I'm sorry that happened to you, if it were my friend, well I'm not sure we'd still be friends afterward.

*flips past completed slide that is blank in our version of the notes*
"The slide is left blank intentionally for you to write in the information"
*student requests to go back to it*
"Oh did you want time to fill in the slide?"

This is a good short summary of some of the problems we've been having with this class...

It wasn't even a blank table so we'd know what information to look up, just a slide with empty bullet points in our version and random information in the professor's!

Le sigh.

I don't typically complain about this class as much as some of our classmates, I get that its a new class and they're trying to make it work, but things like this (and never replying to student questions and dismantling the student group - or possibly just removing the students who were being open and honest about things - that was collaborating with the professors to make it better for everyone) just rub me the wrong way.

That awkward moment when you won't see your long-term boyfriend until January since he's convinced his mom won't allow your puppy in the house (not that he'll even ask), putting Thanksgiving and Christmas out of the question. :lame:

I'm cool with boarding my dog for a few days every once in a while or asking friends to watch her, but I just asked them to watch her a few weeks ago so I could drive him to our undergrad's homecoming. I also don't have the money to board her for long periods of time since I'm only working part-time right now. It's frustrating when it feels like he isn't making any effort at all.

Is there any way you could ask his mom yourself, since he won't ask?

That or get the boyf to pay for boarding costs. Just say you can't afford it and if he wants to see you for then either ask your mom or pay for that, otherwise it's simply not feasible...

I meant to quote this an ended up liking it lol.

I could probably call her but I feel like that would be going around his back a bit, since I've asked him three times to ask her and each time he's said "ok" and then just hasn't.

That's a good idea, actually. I'll have to bring it up with him.

Doesn't have to be around his back. You could just say, "Hey I'll try to talk to your mom and work it out with her" or something along those lines. Or, if you wanted to be more direct, ask him why he hasn't asked her himself.

When I've asked him why he hasn't he always just tells me that he's absolutely sure that she'll say no .

I'll see if he's cool with me asking her. At this point I have Thanksgiving plans set up with my aunt, so I'll definitely have something to do. This whole process has just wound up being very frustrating.

Personally I would be pretty upset if my bf did that...at least if he asked he would have a chance to try to convince her to change her mind.

Yup, woman, it was definitely the vaccine he got a full week earlier that caused your middle aged dog (with a history of murmur) to go into heart failure.

Oh, he's a Cavalier? Yeah, most definitely the fault of the vaccine. Ugh.

Heard a talk from the AVMA today... I have lost all faith in them.

Their "plan" for dealing with increased number of schools and vets is just... wow. I want to know what idiot came up with that idea.

ETA: On second thought, maybe I don't want to know who came up with the idea.

May I ask what the proposed plan was?

Can you say what the plan is?

Can you say what the plan is?

The goal is to try to increase demand for vets by campaign programs and pushing preventive health care (vaccines, yearly visits, dentals, etc). You know because increasing demand for something that most people see as a luxury (pets and vet care) in a time where the economy is still damaged and hurting is just a brilliant idea. That will work great. Just let me know when you get serious about actually solving the problem.

🤣 🤣 🤣

Ok, ok. Even I was expecting something better.

They've been trying to do this for years...

They've been trying to do this for years...

They have some presenter come tell the students about it and he tries to tell it in this super positive way and I am sure some vet students bought it. That this will work, but come on. They can't actually expect that all of us will just nod and go "yeah, that sounds good".

I only wish he had opened it up for questions at the end because I really wanted to grill him. Damn.

So, what's your plan?

I need to have a plan to know that their plan is stupid and not going to work and hasn't been working?

I think bitching about the AVMA doing things that are actually within their power isn't productive, and I think people like to criticize without realizing that there isn't really a perfect answer to the problems the profession is facing. With how the US education system works, AVMA cannot just not accredit new schools that meet their standards. Since they can't stop the supply from increasing, they're emphasizing increasing demand for services. Do I think it's going to fix everything? Absolutely not. Have I also had really crappy experiences with some people from the AVMA? Absolutely - I still rankle when I remember our eboard meeting with their former VP last year.

But they're working with what they have, and I'd just like the people that just sit back and criticize to come up with better solutions to pass along.

That's the thing, though. They're accrediting schools that don't meet their accreditation standards (instead, they adjusted the accreditation standards to fit the schools under threat of a lawsuit). Not okay, IMO.
