When someone who is laughably inexperienced with zoos/aquariums tries to tell me that all captivity is wrong and should be ended 🤣Stop watching Blackfish and start gaining real world experience in the field, then come talk to me.

Also, sorry @Trilt, hopefully Darwin will be okay! As a side question: how do you like caring for a ferret? I've always wanted one.

Even Blackfish wasn't that cut and dried about it...it was specifically geared towards SeaWorld practices, not captivity in general. So the fact that people take that and say "Therefore all captivity must be bad" really annoys me.

Are you following the same Facebook discussion I am on the APVMA page?😵

We've gotten a little crazy.....
I can't even with some people. It saddens me to see people who hope to work in the veterinary field have such a fundamental misunderstanding of the purposes and benefits of captivity.

It is simply a matter of these people having literally no factual foundation for their opinions. You cannot work in one location for a short period of time and act like you have any sort of expertise. Don't even get me started on people who have ZERO animal care experience and think Blackfish is the best thing that has ever happened.

....maybe

Are you who I think you are (in the most uncreepy way possible)?

I facebook stalked the guy that said captivity should end. Didn't see anywhere that he had done anything with a zoo. Granted, it might be due to his privacy settings, but the only animal related stuff at all was the APVMA and a vegan group.

Yeah I am haha! I DID THE SAME THING. And some (NOT ALL) vegans do blindly follow anti-captivity beliefs....

Yeah. I do think there are inherent issues with orca captivity that need to be addressed. I don't have any beef with SeaWorld as a whole, and it's tough to weigh the financial benefits of the shows against the detriments to the individuals participating - detriments that I think are more severe for that particular species than for many others. But I've volunteered at a zoo and interned at another, and to say that the people working there don't care is just beyond insulting. They wouldn't even be working there if they didn't care. It's not like they get much money out of it. And to completely deny the importance of captive breeding, research, and education due to a misguided sense of "freedom" for creatures that wouldn't even understand the concept is ridiculous.

If anyone has read Life of Pi, there's a beautiful passage near the beginning of the book that discusses that particular issue.

I can't believe I actually can connect a real person (from Facebook) to someone on SDN!

Sorry Trilt 🙁 Hang in there.

I'm sorry Trilt 🙁 Poor little guy. And that's way out of line for your roommate to be like that.

Thanks guys. I'm eating ramen and milano to feel better. 😛

She wasn't trying to be rude, just was being a little inconsiderate... especially considering it was my hypervigilance that diagnosed this pretty early in the disease course.

I love ferrets! I have 3, and half ownership of a fourth. They're great little pets, super fun and enjoyable, just have quite a few health problems they're prone to.

You're honestly one of the few people on the APVMA that I can actually stand. Too many pre-vets spitting out their views with little/no research into the topic and using emotion as a replacement for logic.

I agree. But captivity is not, and never will be, perfect (for any animal). And due to Blackfish, Seaworld is overhauling their exhibits just to please those that have no understanding of how they care for their animals anyways. I'm excited to see they plans unfold, but sad that the company had to divert so much funding to this when they could be using it for other things (such as this: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-sea-turtle-rescue-cape-cod-20141125-story.html ).

PS: I got to help with the intake exams on some of those sea turtles

Are they as stinky as my mom assumes they are?

Now I feel creepy because I know who both of you are without even trying

You know it's the holiday season when....

Every other appointment is a euthanasia. and every emergency appointment ends in euthanasia.

This is getting old.
is that a thing? I didn't know that?
People too busy to bother with pets? Or can't afford it so they can buy their kid the newest Justin Bieber crap?

Well someone is a bit more obvious about it 😉

Now the game is to figure out who you are haha! I don't really mind that people know who I am, I don't really do anything too exciting haha
I don't think I've ever posted in there :ninja:

Though I may have liked some of your replies in that conversation

I've noticed this trend too. Lots of euthanasias at the end of the year. Not sure the exact reason for it. Probably a combination of things, but for some reason they become more frequent around the holidays.

well that makes it difficult...
Oh oh I can give you a hint.

And yeah, this is about the first exposure I have had with that facebook group, and I am currently turned off by it.... Just read through several conversations, and just overall not a fan....

I really enjoy helping out peers newer to the application process or who haven't researched as thoroughly as they should have on their own (just saying...). Having the same questions asked repeatedly does get annoying.

When debates do arise, they tend to turn into just emotional tantrums by some. I try to at least put some facts in there and encourage participants to actually research, but usually get responses that say "I am completely wrong."

No, I get what you are saying, and I enjoy it too. It's the reason why I am the person that all pre-vets are referred to at my school. But at the same time, when you have 10 posts on a page, and 3-4 are talking about the same thing, 1-2 are debates fought with emotions... I don't know...

Be nice to my obviousness. 😛. My Min Pin (see left) is named Battie. So Batsenecal is really easy for me to remember. I use it for almost everything, including XBOX.

My number 1 complaint about the page, and the group in general, is the repetitiveness. For the love of dog, is it too hard to search through the posts instead of posting, "Hey guys, I need help finding experience. Do you have any advice." Yeah. I have some advice. READ THE DARN PAGE!!!! THERE ARE TIPS ALL UP AND DOWN THIS SHENANIGANS!!!!! I also feel the only real worthwhile thing about being a member of the APVMA is the symposium. However, seeing as that is 165 dollars this year, I was like, yeesh!!

Bahaha I passed on the Symposium this year too. And I was sad that you didn't get elected last year 🙁

And when I'm back home (1 more month!!), I'll be sure to add you on XBOX haha. I only play on my boyfriend's and I suck, but I'm getting there PS2 and N64 are my favorites 🙄

Yeah, anonymity was not your strong suit here 😛. If it makes you feel any better, first like 5 posts on here were made with my facebook name, then I got lots of 🙄 reactions for doing that, and promptly switched my name 😛

And haha, you are practically reading my mind 😛

I'll just go I'm loud and proud. lol. I actually had no choice but to go for an officership because of how our school gave us the money to go to the symposium. Would it have been cool to get it? Yeah. But not a huge deal. Just was going to use it for my resume. lol.

I actually have a rant now though. CSU, I truly though that adding over 700 hours to my application (like you suggested!!!) would help this year. Nope. Rejected 17 days earlier this year than last year. Can't you give a Colorado native some love?!

Noooo I'm sorry 🙁 I'm rooting for you so hard. I got an interview at my IS and was super psyched until I found out that they invited about 50% of their applicant pool...

Sorry 🙁 Where else did you apply?

I only applied to CSU and K-state this year cause my GPA suffered some last year due to working 40 hours a week. It is what it is.

I'm really glad you got the interview still, @pinkpuppy9 . You put in a lot of work since last year. 🙂

Oh, it's definitely a thing. I really don't know why, but the holiday season is euthanasia season in the small animal world. I used to love seeing all the holiday lights at Christmas time. After 13 years of practice and driving home at night after euthanizing up to 5 cats and dogs in a single day (over and over again), Christmas lights make me sick to my stomach now. In my mind, holiday light displays are associated with killing animals. One of the bad side effects of being a vet, I guess.

I am sorry to hear that. It is really sobering. I don't really understand why this is a thing, or TBH, I really don't want to think about it much.
Thank you for sharing, wish I had something better to say.

Someone asked why we should care if polar bears go extinct. What's the purpose of a polar bear.

I did not sign up to teach a lesson in ecology today :lame:
I think that statement would give my advisor from undergrad a heart attack.

High probability of more surgeries next year. 🙁 Isn't 3 in this last year enough?! Is it too much to ask this for a Christmas gift: to be able to walk unassisted and not in pain?

Sigh.

Absolutely zero idea whether this is really a part of it, but the ECC docs around our hospital swear that it's partly because a lot of people go into fall with a declining animal that they intend to put down, but they want to wait until their kid who is away at college comes back for winter break to say goodbye to it. Or the kid is at home but they don't want to do it when school is on. Obviously that would apply only to certain families with certain-aged kids, but I could see it making a bit of a 'bump' in the statistics to explain <some> of it.

The one thing I do know is that I've heard the same thing from many, many practicing vets.
