Omg. It happened again.

Casually posted that I cringe a little whenever I see kids/adults getting doused in the splash zones around aquatic performing tanks (I know the water is treated, but still) because my mind automatically thinks bacteria. Especially kids since some like to catch the water in their mouths. Someone commented to me that "the healthiest kids play in mud and dirt." So I said that may (or may not....) be true, but mud and dirt can't protect you from catching crypto at a petting zoo and so on. "Well, you're not living life if you worry about getting sick from animals."

Oooooook pal. I'll continue washing my hands after touching animals, you do you.
no, but if you get crypto as a kid, you won't get it in vet school.

Hygiene hypothesis is a thing. Being afraid of diseases has only increased resistance by using crap like lysol. So I think maybe you need to see it from a different perspective

I know about over-sanitizing and over-disinfecting. Still going to wash my hands after a petting zoo trip.

Stiiiiiiiill not going to catch that water in my mouth. I think I'll still be living my life to the fullest if I exert common sense in such situations

The water in mouth part goes a little far, but you are kind of acting like a germaphobe here. You are referencing all tank water.

and "may not be true" - regarding the hygiene hypothesis, this has certainly been observed to be true even if they can't figure out exactly why yet. It's pretty well accepted.

You seem to always want to use extreme examples or exceptions to make your case.

I was a mud and dirt kid and I lived to tell the tale, even after going to water parks. Some of my favorite childhood memories were playing in the irrigation creek behind my grandparents. 😍
So was I, actually. Still not going to open the door to zoonotic pathogens just because I was a "mud and dirt kid." There's more than just bacteria, too. Immunity can't help you with parasites, at least not always. I don't want to get into my personal experience with that one...

My dad and I are aquarium hobbyists and I've had my arms submerged up to my armpits in my tanks almost weekly for the greater part of a decade. I may or may not have gotten aquarium water in my mouth on occasion when my pump wouldn't prime. Obviously I've lived to tell the tale 😛

Really?

Visiting my boyfriend for the weekend and left my allergy medication at my parent's house. Ughhhh misery. Guess I'll just be PTFO'd on his couch all weekend with benadryl.:hungover:

I feel absolutely disgusting right now. This past week was filled with too much beer and delicious, but horribly bad for you food. Need a day to recover but then I need to get back on track diet wise (not on one, just trying not to eat like crap) and exercise.

Oh. And I still refuse to pack even though I need to move everything out by the end of next week.

Really?

I see the problem - there is a tiny arrowhead stuck in the distal aspect of that one leg.

I have had multiple IG patients present for broken forelimbs from jumping off couches and the like, with no evidence of it being a pathological fx. They are brittle dogs. Best wishes for an uneventful recovery. 🙁

Meh, I figure the splash zone people are probably much less at risk than the people who swim in/inadvertently ingest water from questionable freshwater lakes during the summer time. 😛 Not to mention the many people who participate in dolphin encounter programs, where they are actually immersed/swimming in that water with the dolphins vs. just being splashed with it, and do just fine afterwards.

Is there some level of risk? Sure - but using public restrooms at a remote, sketchy rest stop while road tripping definitely gives me the grossness heebie-jeebies to a much greater degree than splash zones. 🤢

Sooo tired! Got home to pick up the pup to drive 45 minutes to go get the kids before I go to the grad party for this year's class and my puppy has had liquid diarrhea that splashed out the side of the kennel. Crap. Quick clean up, offer him food and water and a potty break call hubby. He left an hour early so the poor dog has been stuck in a kennel from 8:30-5:30. Double crap.

Get the pup in the car, make it 5 minutes down the road. Active vomiting in the seat next to me, luckily I caught most with my leftover lunch dish. Bring him home again.

More diarrhea. Much much more. No interect in food. Babysitter can't bring the kids to me. Triple crap. Gotta load the dog back in his kennel. Go get kids. Do 5 minutes of face time at a grad party, then maybe bring the dog into work late night for fluids. Maybe make the vet look at him while at work, but it's a vaccine clinic. Huge exposure risk both ways. And there is an evil version of parvo going around that's already taken out some vaccinated dogs. So maybe not? I guess if not better by tomorrow evening and no answers through the day tomorrow, into the ER (my other job) and hope I still get some sort of discount while only working relief.

Super crap!

My boyfriend broke up with me via text a half an hour into a 12 hour ICU shift. At least my eyes look gorgeous when I've been crying.

What a douchnozzle. If it makes you feel any better, at least he's shown his true colors and you are better off - a truly good and caring person wouldn't pull childish **** like that. There is no excuse for breaking off a relationship via text, FFS.

I got some tools so I wouldn't have to stick my arms in my tanks all the time anymore for plant maintenance, but it is still so much easier to just use your hands sometimes. And I've done the pump priming thing too

All time favorite type of client: the ones who are sweet and happy to your face but complain afterwards about how much everyone sucked. Running a close second is, "Your prices are ridiculous, and I'm angry that you won't do whatever I want, immediately, with no prior appointment. You obviously don't care about my pet so I'm going to go to the emergency hospital instead." It'd be funnier if these were unique instances that have never happened anywhere else and will never happen again. Even in emergency, we'd get the "I'm going to the vet school's hospital hours away at 1 am on a Saturday because you guys are such a rip-off." Bye, Felicia.

My vet/ employer for this summer (I've worked with him for the past couple of years) who is hopefully writing my LOR, was supposed to call me on Monday. He then texted me on Tuesday explaining that he's trying to get the details of my job worked out for this summer, and he'll most likely call me on Thursday, his day off. But it's Sunday morning and he still hasn't called. I don't want to ask him again, because I've asked him a lot, and asking again would be obsessive.... But patience is definitely not one of my virtues.

You're coming to Florida?? 😀
That's really probably the proper enthusiasm, lol. I'm such a grump.

But yes, mooching off a friend's work-paid hotel rooms for a conference in Orlando, gonna hit up a bunch of theme parks and hang out as a bit of a post grad trip. :hardy:

My bf and I were just talking about how much we want to visit Harry Potter world again. We were just at Disney a month ago but it's been a couple years since the last time we were at Universal/Islands of Adventure. Have fun 😀

My boyfriend and I had a going-away party last night since we'll be moving out of our apartment in two weeks, on our roadtrip for most of June, and then in August I'm moving to Kansas and he'll be studying abroad in China for a semester. We invited over 50 people (which we knew would be too many to fit in our apartment, and we expected/kind of hoped a good chunk of people wouldn't be able to come), but only 8 people showed up. And all of them had things to do today, so everyone left by 11. :lame: Four of those people were some of my boyfriend's friends that I'd never met before.

We knew it would be a tough time to plan a party with a lot of people graduating and leaving/preparing to leave town, but this was the only weekend we could do it. One problem was that one of our friends had a graduation party in St. Louis (3 hours from here) last night, so a lot of our friends went to that instead. He did plan his party first, and we were invited to said party, but there was no way we could make it up to St. Louis. But that applied to maybe 15 of the people we invited, everyone else had other reasons they couldn't make it, or they just didn't respond to the invite. I'm not mad at anyone, because I've certainly flaked out on my fair share of parties, but I'm bummed that I won't get to see more of my friends before leaving for vet school, and I wish the people that did come had been able to stay longer. Oh well, I still had fun playing Cards Against Humanity last night, and after everyone left my boyfriend and I continued to drink and watched the Minions movie on Netflix. 😛

Busy on Wednesday? 😉 I'm 97% going because I've not been to Wizarding World and we're kind of just filling in with other theme parks, haha. Although I can't find my "My Patronus is a Sloth" shirt and am SUPER bummed about that right now.

You know, I did have 3 days in a row off work this week (which I did not request, but whatever), and I only JUST agreed to take over a coworker's shift on Wednesday. Bummer.

Rabies titer results came back...I need a booster. :arghh: Dagnabit! I haven't budgeted for a booster and now I don't have the good insurance to get it covered...🙁

No joke... is your state one as bad as mine? $400 just to apply, not to mention the $100 for the license that will expire at the end of this year and will cost another $400 in December to renew... not to mention the cost of the DEA license.

Uh, $580 for the license, then an additional $200 for something drug related (RI controlled substance license), then another $100 for I think the same drug related part but needs to be sent elsewhere with a different form. Oh and then I need to still apply for a DEA license and the $85 to transfer NAVLE scores.

Or I missed understood entirely and just paid extra money for drug license related things because I was confused.

Ouch.

It is quite painful. Job offering to pay for any of it?

Supposedly they'll reimburse everything. I was told I can wait until I'm there and they'll pay the DEA part (aka take it out of my sad little intern salary).

So, not really paying for it.

All the fees suck so much.

Just a nice reminder to future grads: Save up some money to pay for things such as license fees, DEA, moving expenses, etc. A job might cover some of these, but you may need the money upfront prior to being reimbursed. And some places don't cover these things.

Hence why I took out more loan money this year and somehow seem to have burned through a lot of it faster than I anticipated.

My morning starts with a three hour drive and ends with a 9-10hr one to FL. I hate driving. Just shoot me now. :lame:
Welcome to the best state! 😀 Although it's been a little too hot in Orlando the last couple of days.

We actually just crossed in like ten minutes ago (SO decided to drive instead of me, I promise I'm not driving and SDNing) so a well timed welcome!!

Lived in Houston for a chunk of my childhood so I revel in heat and humidity. 😀

Eight minutes into my thirty-minute lunch break, just after sitting down at Atlanta Bread Company to scarf down a quick lunch, my receptionist called. Someone had showed up with a cold, non-responsive cat and refused be referred to the e-clinic 5 minutes away. So I inhaled my cup of soup as quickly as possible, grabbed my sandwich to go, and raced back to work.

The cat was too cold to register on our thermometers (which I think go down to around 93 degrees), had no palpable pulses, and was minimally-responsive. No prior veterinary care, no previous vaccines (not even Rabies), etc. The owners had absolutely no idea what happened (outdoor cat) but looked like some sort of trauma.

The client declined all of my recommendations for treatment, declined euthanasia, and then demanded some minimal/conservative treatments with approximately zero chance of helping the cat.

So glad I gave up my lunch for that. I didn't even get a chance to make the slightest difference for that cat. If only they would have let me euthanize 🙁

That is a serious down for the work day. Feels offered through the interweb and a glass raised that you make it through another heart wrenching story. I hope tomorrow brings something better.
