I guess maybe. But "I" had changed nothing. And the food she was on was bought in bulk. I'd bought 4 bags at the same time. And she was on like bag 2 or 3.

This has been going on for a year and half. I've been through everything I can think of. I did a full CT even looking for cancer. Just in case. She's had biopsies and all sorts of blood tests. She doesn't get vaccines or preventatives anymore.

At this point I'm just want to keep her under control and comfortable

It's easy to do what's needed for a face like that.

Also, I'm simultaneously the best and the worst kind of client. I will do what is needed and I'll find a way to pay for it, but I'm going to question you every step of the way because I graduate in 9 months and can follow what's going on lol
 
I do that with my kiddo. Beyond the biomedical training I got in pursuit of where I am now, my kiddo is a super human, so most doctors readily admit that they don't do as much research as any parent does, so they expect me to know more than they do. (At least the good ones)

I'm at a specialty clinic for the summer, so I realize we are more likely to see the weird cases, such as the ones apoquel didn't work for, which is why I bolded "I saw" in my original statement. I've also seen cases where it was life changing. I know he's got numbers for the percentage of dogs it works for, split up between how many respond well to the high initial dose and how many respond to the mantenance dose. He's cautious with it for now since it is still relatively new and we don't yet know the long term side effects.

He did say they've seen less side effects since starting more frequent/different blood work. I had forgotten about that. Now they generally catch it before it becomes a problem, but they do need to stop apoquel at that point, so I guess I would still consider that an adverse effect since they need to stop taking the drug, granted it isn't a severe side effect yet.

They have had very good luck with CADI (IL31) though. I was told they haven't seen a single adverse side effect yet, but I'll check with the main derm dr to confirm. It's definitely interesting how it works.
 
Admitted a sad little 18 week old kitten to the hospital for azotemia. Create of 8 and even I could tell on the crappy aFAST ultrasound that the kidneys looked wonky.

Oh and ex needs surgery. 🙁

That's awesome news. We love IL31 so far but we've been having supply issues. The patients who are getting it have been having good results. It is a really neat drug.
 
I hear that a lot. It is really hard. But the animals that owners have had for a really long time, but aren't old enough that you expect them to be terminal. Those get to me. And the owner that has had that cat for 12 years is blindsided that it has cancer etc. That kill me

Yeah, I had a lot of cancer patients on clinics and all but one or two were less than 5 years of age. The youngest was barely over a year old.

Derm at school uses CADI as well and feel like it even works in dogs that have stopped responding to Apoquel.
 
@DVMDream, the interwebs as I was searching around.

I'm really lost when it comes to Corky's skin. It's still an issue, he looks like he's constantly snowing. Looks ugly and the dude's uncomfortable.

Time for a derm me thinks.

or discussing seborrhea with your normal vet and seeing if there is a topical or oral supplement that may help 🙂

I mean, if you wait til vet school, you may get a discount.
 
Well I was going to apply to volunteer at the zoo here before school starts. But you have to be a zoo member, which is $70, plus the volunteer application fee (to pay for uniform and training and stuff I guess) is $75 so...nevermind then 😡

My friend was considering joining the zoo when we visited last weekend....but decided against it. Damn fees

Back home the zoo membership is $40 and volunteer fee was $25 (plus you didn't have to be a member to volunteer) 🙁
 
Already cried in frustration at work today. Wish I could take a mental health day, but it's only me and my boss, and I haven't even seen her yet.

Wow...that sucks. when I looked into volunteering at the BR zoo I believe it was just a volunteer fee (don't remember though), and here at the aquarium you just have to attend all the required volunteer orientation/paperwork and pay a $35 fee once you start going through initial training. And as a volunteer, intern, or staff member, you get gift shop and restaurant discounts, and membership/parking/uniforms for FREE!
 
I got up the guts to ask, was told no and went ok. Walked out thinking "I know they could have done it, why did I agree to screw myself out of something instead of pressing harder? Because it sounded inconvenient for him? Yes I have to work with the bastard, but it might as well be a relationship of respect instead of me making sure he is happy."

I mommy strangers. Hence I fail at negotiations. I need to Momma Bear that crap!
 
Completely different note:

I don't understand how easily people can hate. Animal rights protestors have picked up again at one of my jobs, and have managed to get quite a bit of publicity this time. Unfortunately, the target audience is one that has no experience working around the animals in any form. I would be happy to educate people, or discuss their views, but they don't want to. All they want to do it hate, and focus that hate on me. Or yell. Or scream.
I'm just so tired of not being able to go through a day without being called a monster, b****, c***, etc. And because of the events of this year we are starting to get nervous of physical violence against us.
I don't abuse animals. I would never work anywhere that abused animals. I have fought with my boss in events where I thought the animals could be treated better, and my boss has always gone ahead and made changes based on my concerns. Everyone who knows me understands that. So why do so many other people seem to think we are all horrible people???
 
People like to have a crusade to fight for. Once they've convinced themselves there's a problem, they won't be talked out of it, even when the facts and everything else refute their claims. I'm sorry your work is being targeted like this. 🙁 You shouldn't have to deal with their abuse.

One time I was trying to cut a large dog bone in half so I could give one to both dogs. So this thick, dense dog bone... what did I choose to cut it with? A serrated bread knife, brand new and razer sharp of course! Sliced into the knuckle of my index finger all the way into the joint. I now have arthritis in that joint. Because I am so smart

Ouches 🙁 I don't think I got all the way into the joint. Tried to look in there after it stopped bleeding and it seemed like it wasn't that deep. Hard to tell though.
 
I have arthritis in my other hand because I broke the metacarpo phylangeal joint on my pinky of my right hand when I was 11 at the growth plate. Luckily I didn't grow a bunch after that. And a cat bite into the same joint on the index finger of my right hand

Sorry to hear about the protesters BBC. 🙁 People like to lash out against things they don't understand well, especially if those things don't "feel" right on first glance. We got a lot of people like this at animal control too (or god forbid if you wore am animal control shirt in public - we once had a wonderful employee get called a murderer while he was working out in a gym in his ACS shirt). The other problem is that people will make things up and spread those lies authoritatively without ever talking to anybody about it. Things like we drown animals, grind up the dead dogs and sell them to pet food companies, sell animals to labs for scientific experiments, have a vendetta against pit bulls, are out to kill every purebred animal, encourage dogfighting etc. etc. etc.

You have to know that none of this is about you or the job you do, it's about where you work and people not understanding that the employees there do care about animal welfare, and in many cases not understanding what animal welfare is. Yes, you can educate these people, but it is not your job to go out of your way to do so. People need to want to seek out that information to learn more and it is not your job to make them want to seek it out, unfortunately. Yes, you can still have those conversations with them - but they unfortunately are not always productive and can sometimes lead to being shouted down.

You know you care about the welfare of those animals. You know your coworkers and boss care. You know those animals are receiving the best care you all can provide, and what matters is that the animals are being respected and cared for. It's the only thing you can promise and I think that's an important thing to recognize. Some protesters will come around, some will not, but at the end of the day the onus of changing their world view is on them and nobody else.

That being said, I hope the protesters where you work die down. They sound disrespectful with the name calling.

Yeah almost definitely. What isn't sure is if I'm going to take the job offer I have. It's the place I worked as a tech so there are a **** ton of down sides. But there are a **** ton of up sides, including the fact that they really need another vet abs they want it to be me so I'm in prime negotiating position. I'll still apply elsewhere though, if nothing else to get a feel for the area
