Unfortunately, my lease explicitly states that subleases are not allowed. Otherwise that's what I'd probably do. :/

After the holidays, I am going to shoot them an email asking if we could have a formal discussion over the phone about my whole situation. I don't know how open they'd be to me breaking the lease or letting the remaining few months go, but they have very few people who stay there for even a full year and I've been there for two and have always paid way in advance up until now. I'm hoping that they may be lenient in light of the circumstances, but I doubt it.

I've definitely had leases that said subleases weren't allowed but where they did allow me to sublet. Sometimes it just meant that the person taking over the lease go through their credit check process, sometimes I had to swear to them that I understood that if my subletter didn't pay I was still on the hook. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

First of all, don't feel guilty about the support your parents are giving you. Mine let me live at home during college at no cost so I could pay tuition and not worry about living expenses, which helped me get through school with no loans. And . . . I'm still living here. 😉 You're not the only 20-something living at home, and I bet it makes your parents feel relieved to know they can help in some way. Don't let that be a stress right now.

Interview clothes: depending on where you're interviewing, a suit isn't necessary. Do you have any friends that have clothes your size you could borrow? Or check out Goodwill and see if you can get slacks and a nice sweater or blouse. That shouldn't cost more than $15-20, if you really feel the clothes you have aren't interview appropriate.

I'm sorry, money problems are hard. 🙁 I hope your interview goes well and you find a good job soon!

@Elkhart I’m sorry. That is just crappy to have to deal with all of that at once. I don’t have any good advice that hasn’t already been said, but I hope things start to look up for you.

What she said. I'm sorry things are frustratingly bleak right now. Keep your chin up - 5 years from now hopefully you won't believe how far you've come.

Reach out to your friends and family to lean on.

@Elkhart: a few things

1) Go to the local Good Will to find interview attire (for most jobs, a suit is not necessary). You'll spend a ~$15 at the most.
2) Ask to break your lease- I did this when I finished vet school (had ~3 months left on lease and took a job out of state). I had to pay a fee (~$150?) and wouldn't be on the hook for the last 3 months of rent if the rental company could find someone to sign a new lease for the apartment. They found someone within a few days. If you live in a big college town, it shouldn't be hard for them to find someone to take over the lease, especially between semester.s Although I had to pay a fee, it was much better than paying an extra 3 months of rent.
3) Take it one day at a time. Everything happens for a reason.
4) You may want to post on www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance - you may get some really good suggestions there.

Best of luck.

For the apartment, it's usually cheaper for them to allow you to sublet than to take you to court over unpaid rent. I will warn you to be very careful about subletting, I've been burned once before. If at all possible, get the subletter to sign their own lease (my apartment wouldn't allow that and the predictable happened). You don't want to find out you own x months of rent, utilities, late fees, etc because your subletter bailed.

You may have to pay a fee to break your own lease, but if you provide a renter to take your place, it shouldn't be a big deal.

ETA: sorry, meant to edit my original post.

@Elkhart very sorry about your situation.

Agree with @LetItSnow about surrounding yourself with loved ones and good friends. Most people know what it feels like to feel intensely discouraged. It's okay to let others be supportive of you. They care about you. Someday, they may be feeling discouraged themselves, and you'll be there for them. Just saying.

Here are some practical suggestions concerning your lease (I'm not providing any legal advice; just thinking out loud):

1. Make prompt arrangements to discuss this situation with your lessor/landlord as soon as possible.

2. Be honest and polite when describing your situation to the landlord - especially since you already have a positive lease payment record with the landlord. If you and the landlord can reach a mutually-acceptable agreement, you may be able to save some money by ending your lease early and/or not have your credit score dinged for non-payment of the lease. It is likely your landlord does not want to go through the time-consuming and costly hassle of suing you for non-payment of the lease because you can't tender the lease payments anyway due to your present financial situation.

3. Is there is an "early termination clause" in your lease agreement? If yes, review it carefully. Your situation sounds similar to loss of a job (i.e., lessee encounters a financial hardship due to sudden loss of employment, and as a direct result of the hardship, lessee no longer has income to pay lease). In some lease agreements, a financial hardship may provide an "out" from the lease, although you may still have to pay some type of fee to the landlord, or whatever.

4. You might also want to determine if your landlord is required to mitigate damages in your state. If yes, then the landlord may be under a duty to make a reasonable effort to re-lease the flat (and relieve you of some or all of the remaining lease payments). You'll have to review your state laws about this topic.

It's useful to take some time and do some realistic thinking: formulate a Plan B and a Plan C.

Write it down ... organize your thoughts ... and identify your "must haves" at this time. Then, begin to move forward and regroup, using various resources available to you (e.g., job networks, loan repayment counseling, career counseling, personal counseling, etc.). Please know I realize you're feeling discouraged at this time and I'm not diminishing how you're feeling right now. I understand.

Above all else ... I wish you well and hope things begin to turn around for you.

@Elkhart I have no advice - I'm in a different country so I don't know the rules - but I have tons of empathy and support! It may take some time, but you're smart and resourceful and I'm confident that you'll land on your feet. Take it in small steps. Good luck!

small, teeny, tiny rant: why do little dogs freak out when they fart? My Max had gas last night. He would be sleeping, I would be sleeping, all of us are sleeping..all of sudden, he would shoot across the bed like he had been shot out of a cannon. which would wake me up. and the hubby. and the other dog. we get all settled down, just when I get good and asleep... rinse, repeat. I think I got a total of about 3 hours sleep. aarrgghh. I want a nap!

Did he have a rawhide bone yesterday? Any rawhide makes my dog turn into a fart monster. I hope that's not a nightly occurrence! 😛

no, we had fixed navy bean soup, with a ham bone. they got a little bit of the ham (before it went in the soup). doesn't faze the big dog, she was fine. apparently, Max and ham do not get along anymore. It just kinda hurts, to see him get older!

Who tf would throw out a greyhound in Indiana's weather right now? It's -10 right now. It was likely at or close to 0 degrees when she was found. 😡

As context, I have dog fever currently and was just checking the local shelter's page to find that they found a stray greyhound. I have fostered for them and for a greyhound rescue. I'm really hoping that I will get to foster this girl. She has a couple medical problems going on but they can't give me more info until the stray hold is up.

A dog was found frozen solid on its owner's porch in Toledo, Ohio this week. I don't even have words.

Maybe he got away? There are signs up all over around me about a missing boxer. I can't help but wonder if the poor thing froze to death with how cold it's been here. I really hope someone found him, and just hasn't seen the signs yet.

Sorry I should've specified. It's pretty clear the dog didn't just get out. Greyhounds aren't a dime a dozen in this area and no one has claimed this dog for 4 days. Comments on the post from several people indicate the dog was dumped 🙁. Someone said they found the dog a month ago half an hour away and when she called the number on the tag, the owners had given the dog away several months prior. She also had no collar this time or chip and hasn't been spayed but is 6-7. She has some sort of skin mass and an infected toe or toenail. I would guess her owners couldn't take care of the medical issues

Poor baby, greyhounds are almost universally nice, mellow dogs.

Sorry for what is about to ensue guys, but I'm so frustrated and emotionally done over it. I just can't even right now.

So New year's was my SO's bday. I went over for the "new year's" celebration and everything was fine right. So I leave whatever and come back that day around dinner time so we can do the birthday festivities. So I walk in and my SO's mom is an alcoholic (she denies it and dad only enables it despite it causing great friction and great financial hardship) so being new year's I'm sure she has had a few by this point in the day. I've a very reserved person overall and quiet, been with SO for over 4 years so nothing is new and I thought I've seen everything. I never say anything and I'm probably always way more pleasant than I should be putting up with some of their BS. Anyway I walk in and she's just as excited as ever about happy new year despite going through this routine about 10x last night. I say hi and SO comes in wearing his jersey I had got him for his birthday. She then demands he turn around (she had already demanded this earlier in the day) so he walks in turns so I can see the jersey but not all the way and his mother was very displeased. Then his dad came over and said for me to move and jokingly I was like please would be nice and he was like acknowledging happy new year would be also. Ok it's not like I ignored her like he implied with his full sentence. Anyway SO and I are sitting on couch and his mother wants a pic of us smiling. For 22 years my SO has not/does not smile in pictures. She got mad because he wouldn't smile. This isn't anything new... Moving on pizza comes and we are sitting there eating watching tv. His mother had said SO and I could have TV so we had picked a program mid eating she demands the remote to record the show and watch something preDVR'd so they can fast fwd through commercials because forbid they have to sit through a commercial. Show was still playing and yet to a commercial so we sit there and then the show comes to a commercial and she asks for the remote. SO gives it to her, and his brother stands up and SO asks for more pizza while he's up. Simultaneously his mom asks if he was trying to hide the remote from her. He was mid sentence with his brother and then almost immediately after she asked the first question she got all pissy stood up knocking her beer over and asked why he was ignoring her. SO says he wasn't because he was talking to his brother then his father proceeds to jump SO's case as his mother storms off. SO is DONE at this point (I dont blame him) and walks off yelling at his father some colorful things. Yes SO probably shouldn't have said certain things, but then his father proceeds to take a slice of perfectly good pizza off SO's plate and throws it at SO saying even worse things. At this point I'm like really? We are throwing perfectly good food like children. The rest of the evening was akward and I just can't with people who act like that. Then his father starts to throw me under the bus to SO, not to me, but him being all mad because I "don't contribute to conversations". Well when all your stories ever start with is when I was x amount drunk, or some of the stories are so biggatory and racist I just can't even (like teaching a person who doesn't speak english wrong words for things because you think it's funny) that's how bad it is. You know they say when you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all apparently I will say exactly what I think now. How my SO turned out so kind from them I have no idea. End rant I'm sorry guys I just can't relate to them and I try to be nice to them for SO's sake, but idk how much longer I can do this. Only 6 more months until we move...

Spoke too soon, just read a new article about a dog that froze to death overnight after being dropped off outside a Detroit rescue. Rescue workers found the poor thing the next morning. You couldn't wait until morning?!

The nonprofit clinic I work for had a cat dumped overnight. Someone came in today and there was a box with frozen cat food but no cat. The cat had escaped. I can't imagine anything could last long in this weather. So sad.

We had the inverse happen where I work a while back, somebody tied a dog to a fence on the back of our property where no one could see. No food or water, in the middle of Texas summer. It had a heat stroke and died and I think we had to open a case looking for the person so we could pursue cruelty charges.

I hope it found someplace warm to crash. I feel sick when I hear of this stuff.

One of the towns next to my hometown had a dog dropped off to them (more like the person drove up, set the crate outside, and left) in a crate that was wrapped in a black garbage bag that was tied shut. In July. Like, why? You're already bringing it to a shelter, so what's the point of potentially killing it?

Yep we got a mom and young kittens that were dumped in a rubber made container with no way out in August. We were lucky someone found them before it was too late.

Reminds me of the time I was dropping off feral cats to a central Florida shelter. I was in the waiting room and someone walked in with a black trash bag (again tied shut). I assumed this person was dropping off a dead animal or something but instead I heard "I'd like to drop off this mom cat and her kittens." The person at the front desk snatched that bag out of that guy's hands and ripped an air hole for them with impressive speed. At least the guy didn't leave them outside the front door.

Yeah, happens all the time unfortunately. We get tons of people dumping animals and leaving them in direct sunlight in 90+ degree heat, taking newborn kittens and dumping them here in the middle of the night with no momma, so on and so forth. Some people really do treat animals like garbage and see getting rid of them as more of an inconvenience than anything else.

So tired. Back to back to back 12 hour days. Multiple euthanasias yesterday. Water main burst right next door as we were closing last night. 6 am Flight tomorrow.

All I want is sleep.

I wish there were sad reacts on here like on FB. Liking posts that make me sad doesn't feel adequate 🙁

I don't even really know where to put this but today ended up being the last day for my puppy with cancer. I'm not even especially sad at this point because I knew it was coming but I'm frustrated that this happened and that there was nothing we could do to prevent it or fix it. And also annoyed that it's winter and my car sucks/can't be trusted so I couldn't manage driving out to see her.

Very sorry finn. Wish things had turned out differently. Sending kind thoughts your way. 🙁

Sometimes you just have to giggle. It's not often I get to write the following in a history: "Owner placed constricting tourniquet around carpus and used blow torch to cauterize broken nails."

I mean. A blow torch. Geez, dude.

Was presenting complaint for the nails or burns??

Just wow! Thats certainly a creative (by which I mean stupid) approach. Thanks for sharing the giggle.

It rained in Miami. The practice was not for me. I got sick during the interview and it followed me back to MN. My fave patient is 8wk post arthrodesis and now non weight bearing lame. :/
I want to sit in a comfy chair and drink tea.

Why on earth would you come back HERE from Florida? At least it's warmer down there! 🙂
