Pain bad enough to keep me wide awake is the worst! And apparently I grabbed the wrong PRN bottle when I was packing to come home... a beta blocker is useless to me right now. I was hoping it would calm down, or that I'd be able to knock it back with NSAIDs, but no go. I'll be calling to book an injection in the morning.

That’s how school always was for me- I was always super sick on breaks! Feel better soon.
 
During our club's luncture today, two of my classmates came into our room and were in line to grab food. I had the RSVP list memorized and was pretty sure they weren't even club members. Mentioned it to our president who asked if everyone present was a dues-paying member and RSVPd and they claimed yes. Before I could even open up my responses to see if maybe there was some confusion and they had responded after the due-date (I hadn't bothered to close the survey), they were out the door. Just took the food and didn't even stay for the speaker.

A little sour about it.

That is super uncool. We usually check people off while they wait in line for food, so they can pay club dues if they hadn't or whatever, but man I've never had someone even try to steal food from a club they weren't a member of, let alone actually do it.

That’s gonna happen a lot 😛 but usually the ones who sneak in at least stay for the lecture too lol

Yeah, since our club is so small I just keep a mental list of who to expect, predominantly to make sure the speaker doesn't start before everyone has arrived, because I really would not have expected anyone to just come like that. I wasnt positive they weren't club members, because the treasurer has the most up to date list. I'm so new at this that I wasn't prepared to call them out, but our president is going to report them to the dean

Yup, same

And I have definitely signed up for food and not stayed for a lecture before because I had to do something else, but always for clubs I had paid dues for lol

Um reporting them to the dean is a little extreme. Just put something in your next RSVP reiterating food is only being for dues paying members, and make people sign in before they get food or something.

I was treasurer for a super small club, and we had meetings in the smaller rooms upstairs in Bustad to help prevent issues. You could do that as well. It’s annoying and rude but not something that’s reporting to dean worthy.

It may spark a “professionalism” email to everyone at least, which I think is valid given the circumstances. But I think my first step would be to have someone go through the line to confirm dues paid, at least early in the year to set the tone/expectation.
 
I don't think it's extreme at all. According to my roommate, the dean is the one that put into place the penalty system for clubs. It is actually a different thing - for people who RSVP but then don't show. What I'm not sure of is if it is the current dean or our previous dean. Nonetheless, this is a graduate program, and unprofessional conduct does not fly IMO.

I'm surprised the dean is so involved in club activities. We leave that to SAVMA, and if it's too big of an issue for them to handle themselves they go to their faculty advisors.
 
I think it's a little over the top because I feel like that can be handled student to student rather than by a dean. As a student, I want our associate dean handling more important things than club disputes.

We're all professionals and can discuss problems together like it. Our VBMA sent out an email two years ago saying, "Hey, if you aren't in the club, you can't have our food." Hasnt been a problem since. When we have problems of people dipping out right after getting food, they send out an email saying so and so is paying for the food and to stay out of respect.

But we also are way less strict. We dont have penalties for people who dont RSVP, for example. People not in the club are welcome to food as long as the club members who RSVP get food first. No one gets food until they check in with the club as they go through the line.

We should really start doing this. A lot of the time there is a bunch left over that ends up in the lounge for anyone to grab anyway, plus some people who aren’t in the club will come in after the lecture has started (and everyone in the club has grabbed food) and get food anyway before they sit down. Might as well make it official.
 
Our school's biggest food/lecture issue is when we have lunch *after* a lecture (like we do once a month on Fridays) and people that decide not to attend help themselves to the pizza outside the lecture hall while the lecture is going on, before the actual attendees get a chance at it. There have been times where there wasn't enough pizza left over for the attendees because the vultures took 3-4 pieces each. Even in that case I don't think we've ever reported it to faculty, we just publicly shame them instead :laugh:

Sam now guards the food at CSB until everybody's out of the videoconference and fed :laugh:

Hey,
I sped read through some of the other posts so I might have missed some things. Send them to the SAVMA list. Explain the situation. If the officer board feels strongly we can blacklist them. That's the reason we put that in place.
 
I mean, technically its stealing, what if your dean decides to suspend them? We are adults and professionals. Just go up to them and say hey, you owe us dues or dont steal the food, it's not cool. It seems incredibly intense to have the dean handle something that you should be able to handle. If you are super anti-confrontational, have the class prez send a mass email reminding everyone of the rules for club meetings.

So at what degree of stealing do we hold people responsible for their actions? Only if someone is injured? Only if the value is above a certain dollar amount?

Stealing food is ok? So stealing computers? Not ok? Stealing wallets? Stealing personal items?

Stealing is stealing and is never ok regardless of what it is or is for. There are consequences for stealing.

Having said that, I can guarantee the dean isn't going to suspend anyone. I witnessed much worse actions by students throughout vet school and the administration barely lifted a finger. Heck, even the student who purchased horses under false pretenses and has been arrested in multiple states didn't get suspended by her school. (She may be suspended now, but last I heard they weren't suspending her).

Ehhhh. Reporting to a dean over food seems excessive. I would say something to them and if it ever happens again consider further action, but idk seems trivial. Annoying but not worth potentially severe consequences.

Yeah I'm saying the consequence of stealing food shouldn't be reporting it to the dean. Do you think all of those crimes you listed should have the same consequences?

Since all stealing should have consequences, are you recommending she report it to the police? Stealing is stealing. She definitely should not use discretion when making choices in life.

We can go back to taking a hand for stealing! Then if they do it again they’ll have no hands to steal more. It’s the perfect punishment.

No, I am saying that I don't think her comment that she reported it to the dean should have all of you jumping her for it. She saw a problem that needs to be addressed and alerted a person she felt comfortable with alerting it to so that the issue can be addressed in a matter that the school deems appropriate.

You are the one afraid it could cause suspension which I don't understand why you'd think the dean would jump to that extreme? After all, you don't even think it is worthy of telling the dean so why if this is so minor in your mind do you think the dean would suspend these people? I mean, I agree, I personally, wouldn't have bothered the dean with it, but telling the dean isn't wrong (as you are all implying) either. :shrug:

Oh, and as an aside, the classmates I know of that would regularly "steal" food from club lectures like this, I wouldn't trust with a dead cockroach. Unfortunately, this behavior shows that they aren't trustworthy and that will be seen in their work as well once they graduate.
 
The way I see it is that announcement was made about being paid club members, which these people lied about being and then scampered off with food. If it was simply a case of “oops, I didn’t know” they could have paid club dues at that point or after the lecture, or contacted a club officer later. That’s cool in my opinion, just a misunderstanding that a personal conversation should fix. But lying about it...c’mon now. If they lack the professionalism to do the proper thing in the first place, even when reminded? I doubt they’re suddenly going to become professionals when a classmate confronts them. (Maybe not even after the dean does, either.) Sucks to have people like that around, and I think confronting them is fine, but so is asking the dean to send out one of those email reminders to everyone about professional courtesies. I don’t think Coffee is trying to have them expelled or anything.
 
These very things are why I didn't join clubs. First year I joined a club and it was mandatory to go to a lecture before being allowed to do a wetlab the following weekend. They had a guest lecturer for the first one and people came in late, were loud, got food, and left. It aggravated me to no end the insolence in their behavior. I never joined a club or went to another lab again because of it. These types of people are everywhere, even in our classmates and colleagues. For whatever reason, they don't have the internal right vs wrong guiding actions. They aren't necessarily bad people, just are missing that extra thing that comes from internal honesty ruling over all actions. I don't know that I would have gone to the dean, but every school has to deal with this with all clubs. The emails were endless for please only get food if you are a dues paying member and don't sign up then skip etc. Tis the nature of the beast.

I was referred to cardiology after hitting my head, because the ER doc was the first person ever to take a comprehensive enough history to find out that I've been fainting roughly every 4-6 months since I hit puberty. So roughly 30 years. I don't usually go see anyone since it's so normal for me... just brush myself off and carry on... so nobody except my family knew it was happening. But apparently that's not normal. Cardiologist said she wouldn't follow up until all the testing was done. I wore a Holter monitor for 24 hours and had an echo, but haven't done the bloodwork yet. Echo was Thursday afternoon, and they reiterated 3 times that it would be 3-5 days before the doc got the report. Her office called on Friday morning. I'm guessing they found something on the Holter readout. Lovely.

In a pre-anesthetic assessment when I was 15 I was told I had a heart murmur. Another doc listened and basically said "I think you imagined it" and nothing's been said since. But I just wonder....

I now know what the lidocaine spray we use to intubate cats tastes like. This is the worst, but I'm telling myself that if they find some answers it'll be worth it. 19 hours to go....

Crazy busy at work today (monkey tooth extractions took forever - fun but so time consuming) and missed lunch. Had an appointment to get my car's oil changed and tires rotated and after I hand over the keys they inform me I'll be stuck here for 1.5 hours. Am eating all their crappy lounge snacks and feeling very sorry for myself and the fact that my very long commute is likely to be doubled thanks to this extended wait.
