Well I'm not breeding the spiders anyway, a zoo is, I'm just researching best practices for them

but, black widows? or maybe breed them to not be so poisonous?
Well then they wouldn't be able to eat their prey 😛 It's not like they're releasing them in people's backyards, they're for the zoo collection and for research projects. Their venom is used in the pharmaceutical industry too.

There have been no reported deaths from black widows in the US in over 30 years and most people that are bitten don't require medical treatment at all. They really only mess with you if you mess with them.

I can't speak for other venomous species, I just know a lot about black widows now lol

We have a ton of them around where I grew up, they really do mostly mind their own business. Every person that I know who has been bit by one got bit because they had clothes on the floor that the spider crawled into and then they put the clothes on.

Supposedly it hurts and you feel like you have the worst flu of your life but that’s about it.

Yeah, living in AZ, we were taught to shake out any clothes/shoes before putting them on. I've seen a few black widows, they aren't going to hurt you unless they need to defend themselves from you.

I've also dealt with a number of scorpions too. They're not even all that bad, even the bark scorpion that is supposedly deadly isn't really that deadly at all.

I don't think I've ever seen a black widow. I read this thingy that their hourglass patterns vary by subspecies (?) based on their nesting location and whether potential predators (e.g. birds) are above or below them? Is that nonsense? Some ventral, some dorsal, and some both?

There's little black scorpions here, and I'm a fan of walking barefoot. The glue trap by the toilet caught one once, better the trap than my foot while taking care of bidness in the middle of the night.

I had a curious centipede walk over my barefoot while I was chillin on SDN, but it was friendly (except the feet walking on you gives you a WTF moment at first). I've had brown recluses walk over my barefeet and actually bitten right before an overnight shift. Self-defense my butt. They initiated. 😡

That's what they said about the Dinosaurs in that movie 😛

Also I've had a few run ins with black widows in my house before we taped up the openings in the windows. I have no idea where the webs were but one day my roommate was sleeping on my couch and a female black widow crawled across the blanket near her face. She woke up, starting screaming and that black widow charged her. There's video after she was caught in a glass of how damn aggressive she was. After burning everything (not really) it took almost a year for my roommate to go back into the room. Other spiders can handle the flies and wasps, thanks.

I don't freak with the huge wolf spiders we have, or the "banana spiders" (we just relocate them if they try to build in a walkway), or the cute little fuzzy black and white ones. Or even the tarantulas that we have in the front hedges. Black widows scare the bejesus out of me, probably because I had a cousin get very sick after being bitten. (yes, it was many many many years ago) but things you witness as a child do impact you horribly.

Shortly after my cousin was bitten at my grandmother's house, I went with Mom to go look at a new house for us. (we were moving from Sweetwater to Rotan). I was 5. The realtor was a little late meeting us, so we were on the front porch. We looked into the living room...Mom screamed, grabbed me, and we sat in the car. She told the lady that there was no way we were going anywhere near the house. It was infested with black widows. Their webs were floor to ceiling in that room...it was kinda pretty, because they were backlit...but creepy, too, with all the spiders walking around. Like a moving structure. I still have nightmares...

You know what can die in a fire? Ants. I hate ants, especially fire ants.

I was standing in the middle of the living room as a kid one easter and felt a tingling/burning sensation on my feet, I didn't look just reached down and scratched them. The sensation wouldn't go away so looked down and my feet were covered in fire ants and they were biting the crap out of my feet.

I got them all off, but damn my feet were a red, hot mess for weeks. Those jerks of ants were entering the house from the middle of the carpet in the middle of the living room.

Don't mind me, I'll just be over here in my conservation corner, fascinated by all the animals everybody hates 😛

My computer decided to self destruct tonight. I have a 100% final tomorrow morning. So thrilled.
After not turning on (despite many attempts) over 48 hours, my computer decided to turn on as soon as the computer store employee hit the power button. Very happy to have my computer back, but that person must think I am the worlds largest idiot lol.

I generally view computer store employees as idiots, but I at least hope (for your money) that they did a thorough root cause analysis instead of just taking your money and handing it back to you only for the problem to recur.

Oh, I didn't pay for anything. I was just going to try and get him to pull whatever he could off of my hard drive so I had my school notes before I sent the computer to the manufacturer (and pay him for that). As soon as it turned on we had a laugh and I went along on my merry way.

Nice! On the one hand, it's good you didn't pay money for nothing, but on the other hand, you have no assurance that this problem won't recur in the future (especially at a really bad time like before a 100% final) without really identifying and addressing root cause.

Hope you get this worked out or at least have redundancy (multiple devices and all your important stuff centrally backed up). 🙂 I haaaaate, hate hate computer problems.

So I've had a cold for 2 weeks and I finally got a Zpak and some prednisone to kick it (on day 2 and already loads better). Then, guess what happened today…slipped and fell on ice and at minimum sprained my wrist. Still deciding whether it's worth going to urgent care or just RICE-ing it. Of course it's my dominant hand too.

2019 sucks. I've had like 3 colds this year, totaled my car in May, sprained my ankle in the same accident, and now this. And my birthday falls too close to Thanksgiving this year.

Truly, no one cares about whether I am here or not and that hurts.
I can tell you this is 100% not true, and it's depression that makes you think that way. I am sure that if you told your family that you felt left out and that it hurt your feelings, they would apologize and make a special effort to reach out to you more. Sometimes people just go by "no news is good news" and assume that you're doing OK. It's not that they don't care, it's that they're not showing that they care in the ways that are important to you. So you have to tell them what you want. You have to advocate for your own good mental health. They're not doing it because they don't care, they just don't understand, and you need to meet them at least halfway on that. They love you, and I'm sure they would be absolutely crushed to read what you posted today. I'm sorry you're feeling lonely on Thanksgiving. Hugs.

@Elkhart I didn’t see your original post but wanted to chime in on @genny ‘s comment.

I’m not the kind of person to be regularly checking in on how people are feeling about anything, because I’m a private person and I don’t really like that when roles are reversed. I don’t want to share much detail, emotion or insight with basically anyone but my husband and sister. So my behavior toward others mirrors what I prefer for myself. Like genny said, you need to ask for or make clear what you want from others, even if you think they should know, because some of us just aren’t automatically going to be like that. How much I care about a person has nothing to do with how much I reach out to them or not.

Have you ever read about the Five Languages of Love? It’s not just for romantic relationships but applies to other personal relationships, and I think you’d find it interesting to learn more 🙂

I am watching star trek TNG (the whole series for the first time) and Troi just started making out with Worf

I DON'T LIKE IT

Although tbh I don't like it when anyone on this show makes out, period. It's always so awkward.

I was such a Star Trek tng nerd as a kid. It’s been a good while, so maybe I need a re-watch.

This doesn't advance the Prime Directive! Stop touching tongues at once!

So I'm volunteering at the animal Body Worlds exhibit in town right now... today I asked two ladies if they had any questions about the camel specimen and they replied "no, we're medical students so we already know all of this stuff". Ah yes, I totally forgot that humans have a 3 chambered stomach and walk on their third digit just like a camel 🙄

I would have made a comment but would have spiced it up with "Wow! I didn't realize human males have spines on their penises that induce ovulation in human females!" When did humans start doing that? Because I'm fairly certain I ovulate without any external stimulation necessary.

I was 100% tempted to do something like this but bit my tongue

But why??

Something about professionalism blah blah blah  On a similar vein, I got told I'm not allowed to refer to horses as "stupid" because it's derogatory... I'm supposed to use "less cognitive function" to be less offensive and more professional. Ok that's fine but if you've ever met a horse you know they do stupid things 🙄

Well you wouldn't want to hurt the poor horsies' feelings!

You know what's not fun? Accidentally sticking your hand in dog crap.

Rude people should not let their dogs poop on other people's things and then fail to clean it up.
What?? Eww!! What is wrong with people?

Yeah, I had something on the ground (by the wall, mind you, so not out in the middle of everywhere) at the dog show and when I was picking my things up to leave I got a handful of poo. Looked like there had been a bad attempt to clean some of it up so not just a matter of the owner not noticing--not that failing to notice would have been okay either. Very annoying. And gross.

The NFL decided to celebrate Michael Vick by making him a probowl captain, so... that's fun

It's now triggered a fight in my house about whether we should support the NFL by watching it*. Very strongly opposed sides. I'm on the side of not continuing to line the pockets of convicted felons/dog killers because there are other fun games in the world that don't require fans to look the other way while players kill living creatures.
+pissed+

Edit to clarify: "it" meaning "professional football in general". No one is watching the probowl because apparently it's "dumb anyways" 🙄 which like... yeah. lol.
