Crazy because on that same day during a lunch lecture, they were giggling so obnoxiously that someone in the first four rows turned around to look at them. I felt horrible for the lecturer,, I genuinely don't understand why you can't control yourself and just step out of the classroom if something is so funny you'd disrupt a vet's presentation

Look. It's a very, very cool organ. The physiology is truly incredible. When it works.

When it doesn't you're basically SOL. And even moreso when all of the lunatic animals you work with require full anesthesia to get anything meaningful done. Triple that when you're working in a field that is dead-set on feeding all hooved animals grain even when they really don't need it (or at least not nearly as much as they actually get).

I really do wish I went the nutrition route sometimes.
 
I gotta say. Some people need to figure out how to doctor having 4 hospitalized patients that are stable and 1 transfer. This hospital isn't going to be around starting in 2 weeks. These two particular doctors will not be able to just send things my way without calling first just cause they get a little bit stressed 🙄. They're both internship trained at two big name hospitals. And just checked, they are fully staffed today.

Vet students, don't be this doctor when you work as a team. You can in fact handle multiple patients at once with a solid team. It's okay if you're in ER and your wait time is 1.5 hours instead of 30-60mins.

I know things have significantly slowed down in our area since I started with this group cause I went back and looked at how many patients we saw in 24hrs. At the hospital they're at today, we would average 50 per 24hrs. Now we're around 30. Between 3 docs (day, swing, and night), that's pretty doable as long as we have an inpatient tech, three triage techs, and several assistants.

This has been a recent issue of two of our docs. Where if things seem to be a bit more crazy, they'll just turf things to me here. And I'm like. Literally no one else does this. I don't understand cause I know where they did their internships, know people who did the internships with them, and their case loads were massive in comparison.

Well, in two weeks they'll have to put their big girl scrubs on.

Wait times are a big stressor on our management right now cause we'll have clients leave. And shockingly, it's not our doctor deficit that's the problem. It's our tech deficit. Corporate wants a 1:1 tech to doc ratio. 🙄 Well, when we have one tech for 5 hospitalized patients and 5 triage patients, it's going to take her time to get her **** done

We also have an assistant within that ratio. So it's 1:1:1. My main point is what happens when 3/5 hospitalized patients needs blood work and 3/5 triage patients need diagnostics. Assistants cant pull blood or do rads by themselves. So then triages leave cause they don't want to wait for us to prioritize the hospitalized patients.

There were times in my residency where we had a 1:3 tech to doctor ratio and sometimes they would give us 2 assistants instead of 1 tech overnight. So they can’t draw up drugs, place catheters, give any drug, or pull blood, but by-golly they could take x-rays!

General gist is a group of vet students are accusing the NAVLE of racially motivated score manipulation and systemic fraud. Plus a class for third party data analysis because Tuskegee is being targeted for termination based on NAVLE scores.

I’m not saying these claims are justified or untrue I’m mainly just confused.

I didn’t think the ICVA had access to your race? They asked me at the end a bunch of questions and you could choose to answer demographic information. Or are they saying that the ICVA is lowering Tuskeegee students scores?
 
This is all news to me. Has anyone heard about this pre-ligation letter that was sent?

Most standardized tests favor white upperclass test takers. I don’t think there has to be any intention in the part of ICVA to deliberately manipulate the scores on a racial basis - there may be bias in the test. If NAVLE scores are going to be the sole basis for the nation’s one HBCU vet school to lose accreditation, I think an audit for bias should happen before taking that step.

Tuskegee is on probation for more than just NAVLE scores unfortunately.

I haven’t seen anything about it, and I’d like to think I’m pretty in the loop. Plus I haven’t seen any friends at Tuskegee post about it on their stories or such.

Same here mainly just confused. Like I don’t think a third party review is unreasonable, but what happens after that?

I don't even know if the ICVA can see what school each test comes from, or if they're graded blind since the points for each question are pre-determined. I honestly cannot remember since it's been almost 5 years.

I also wonder how they would plan to explain how Tuskegee only recently had these issues compared to pre-COVID and that many schools had this problem (some others still do, I think, just not as extreme).

My final concern is the Reddit aspect at all. I found myself on reddit yesterday on accident (looking into corporations that own different clinics and suddenly I'm on Reddit at work....). Some of the r/Veterinary and r/Vetstudent opinions and misinformation were.... impressive.

Bring on the third party audit. And while we're at it, do all of the schools. If shady shenanigans is found, the AVMA, AACVM, and ICVA needs to be held to the fire and forced to update these accreditation standards (**cough include passing rates cough**).

But people also need to prepare for the possibility that there isn't anything shady, and that means the schools that have poor NAVLE performances (regardless of the school) are 1) admitting students that are not prepared for a rigorous program and/or 2) aren't teaching students appropriately.

There's always the possibility both are happening as well and one is exacerbating the other.

To add to my feelings on Reddit being the wild West:

Toddler Bats and I just watched the Daniel Tigger episode about going to the hospital to get an ear surgery. I was curious about what ear surgery it would be, so I googled it. The first link was Reddit.

Y'all. The entire discussion was nitpicking how inaccurate an animated children's show that is approximately 25ish minutes long about what going to the hospital is like. I couldn't roll my eyes hard enough.
 
What are they going to do if they get the meeting they're asking for and they're told, "Tests are graded automatically and there's no human eyeballs that actually grade the test (since it's multiple choice and electronic" or "graders are given numeric identifiers for test takers that have no demographic information"?

Also I want to know where they got all this data that shows that specifically students at Tuskegee and English speaking students from Latin American schools are being singled out. Like that’s a large smoking gun if true.

And wouldn't there be a noticable trend at other schools? While yes, Tuskegee has the highest number of minority students, other schools do have minority students. It would be fairly obvious if the minority students at other schools were also failing.

Quite a few students in my class failed NAVLE. None of the ones I know of were the minority students (and several were the top 25% students according to them). That doesn't mean the minority students didn't fail. But I think there would have been a pattern noticed sooner than 5 years out.

I pretty much only use profile pics to ID people. Who has the time to look at usernames? So whenever someone switches pictures, it takes me a hot second to go, "ah yes, this is Katie, not some random Internet stranger whom I've never interacted with."
