Trying to find somewhere to live with pets is so hard. I have two cats, a dog and have custody of my brother’s cat until he can take care of her. I am leaving the dog and my brother’s cat with my mom which makes me sad but I can accept. I don’t want to leave them all. I am inseparably attached to the twins. I can’t sleep without them.
In that rural real estate market where my new job is, it makes more financial sense to buy if you plan to stay in the area long term. The problem is that I have complications that complicate staying long term. My best friend and I were always going to live together, but she has a very specific set of very expensive needs due to not having a driver’s license, meaning she needs to be near the train and a grocery store. It is nearly impossible to find a place that suits her needs and allows cats. I am okay to live by myself with my cats but that may not bode well for our relationship in the long term, especially as we get older and our parents get elderly and we need to lean on each other more. That is why I don’t want to buy even though buying would solve my other housing problems. At the same time, I feel like I am being forced to give up having my cats with me for her and that is just way too much to ask.

Hypothetically let's say I lived somewhere with a 2 pet limit while I had 3 pets (briefly 4) and no one found out or cared for the 3 years I was there. It's not totally ethical and you want to make sure your cats don't cause property damage or anything, but what your landlord doesn't know . . . Hypothetically, of course.
For real, it's so hard to find pet friendly housing, and when you do find it there's breed restrictions or weight restrictions or you can only have one pet. I know a lot of people that don't report all of their pets to their landlord. It's a risk if you're found out, but it can be an option.

Without knowing the background of why there's no driver's license, could she potentially get a driver's license? That does then get into the discussion of needing other things (her own car, car insurance, registering the car) which is a lot of up front costs, especially now. However, the up front costs now may balance out the long term costs (especially as algorithms are used to determine pricing for ride shares or transportation ticketing 🙄)
But this may balance out the commitment both of you are being asked to do.
The pet housing is one of the main reasons we decided to buy (also not much up for rent in this particular area)... very very complicated, I'm sorry. But also, yes, we just hid our third pet in our two pet limit apartment for a while. Good luck!
Her not driving is some combination of severe anxiety (primary) and questionable depth perception. Her ophthalmologist was okay with her driving but her anxiety is not. Her car anxiety is actually better than it used to be. There were many years where she wouldn’t even get in my car. She is spending an absurd amount of her income right now to live right by the train and not drive, making me quite sure it would be cheaper to drive, but I think it is a mental health thing and that outweighs the cost for her.

Missed signing up for lots of the electives I wanted because I got a new phone since the old one broke and doesn't charge anymore, and Microsoft Authenticator is a useless, awful app that ruins everything. Locked out and UPEI IT won't help until at least next week, screw me getting any large animal electives I guess! Thanks so much Microsoft! I'm never touching a Microsoft product again in my life I am so deeply disgusted with this nonsense and stupidity.
I am on day 9 of a GI catastrophe. Finally got in to see my doctor and they ordered a bunch of tests, provided me with the supplies to collect the sample.
Well, they gave me the wrong tubes so now I have to go through this process all over again, and results will be even further delayed. I'm f***ing miserable 24/7 right now, down 10lb in a week and getting so little sleep. I don't even want to eat which is so extremely out of character for me. ugh.
ETA: oh and separate MIL rant: she called my husband at 10pm last night, of course a call that late at night with no warning, one assumes the worst. Well she was calling to let us know that his cousins asked about us having a baby and she felt it important to tell us AT 10PM that she 'confirmed it.'
And all of this is relevant to the fact that my MIL/FIL/SIL are blocked from seeing my facebook posts and have been for almost 10 years
so they didn't see the very quiet post I made a few months back, so she has apparently thought the birth of my baby was supposed to be a secret only she (and immediate family) got to know this whole time. And since MIL is a raging narcissist, my guess is her calling her son, who has a 3 month old, at 10pm out of the blue was her version of punishment. Or making sure he actually answered her (in a panic) because he ignores 99.9% of her calls and texts. MIL also never staysup past like 8pm so she did this intentionally.
I wouldn't care if the call didn't 1) wake up the baby 2) wake both of us up 3) have my husband literally panic when he saw it was her and she started the call with 'Son, I have something to tell you....' god she's ****ing insane

Yes this is what I am trying to get tested for, of course the specific test for this is the tube they messed up 😒 about to just take some TMS home from work and treat empirically because idk what else this would be, but I also kind of want to know for sure

But yes all of my symptoms match up perfectly, though I haven't vomited (not surprised, not puking is my only talent?). If it is this, I'm just thankful it's not readily contagious because it would surely put the baby in the hospital for a while. Like...without getting too graphic, the 'explosive water' description is spot on

Somehow I haven't dried up yet! but it does not help the dehydration. If going to the ER wasn't such a PITA I would have gone Sunday for fluids but meh. I don't know if urgent cares can give fluids...?
Liquid IV (specifically the cherry ringpop flavor) kept me from going for fluids on Sunday! I mean drinking water in general lol but when you really have no appetite and are feeling lethargic, it's hard to drink water

I am so sorry you are sick @pp9! Being sick as the parent of an infant is a special kind of awful. I hope you feel better soon! Some urgent cares do fluids and some don’t. Sometimes Internet review can give you hints on which ones do. You could also just call and ask if they have that capability before coming in.
Sending calories and hydration your way @pp9 . That sounds truly miserable.
On a different note— why are there so many supposed admissions faculty on Reddit that never come on SDN— particularly one that says “you get no brownie points for going above minimum hours” (when I thought it was common knowledge, that at least at some schools or with a low gpa, you very very much did)? Am I misinformed?

Because anyone can be anyone they want to be on the internet. At least on SDN there is some verification required for things like the veterinarian badge.
And it really depends on the school’s grading rubric. It’s very possible that at a school, there isn’t any additional points given for experience after you meet the minimum…I can’t remember where I’ve seen that before but it rings a bell. I’d say it’s more common that more hours does get considered favorably, but without knowing where that person is from and how they assess applicants, it’s hard to say. But this is why we say it’s important to know exactly how a school evaluates its applicants.
We do get the occasional user on here that claims they are faculty/sit on the admissions committee/etc at unnamed schools. They are very often appearing suddenly in the context of an argument, and disappear just as quickly...but as Jayna said, there's no way to verify identities. I will second that there probably is a school out there that assigns a set amount of 'points' for achieving certain benchmarks in your application though. One school I applied to myself used to do this, but they've changed up their admissions quite a bit since.
Personally I do not think people in admissions positions are suddenly making SDN or Reddit accounts to help the masses. If anything, you'll get a long-time user who continues to post throughout their career...otherwise it's sus to me. But also post the link lol
I think more people on admissions teams potentially silently scroll SDN and other sites than we probably realize. They’re at least aware of it. I learned of SDN in vet school because in a student ambassador meeting our admissions lady made a passing comment about online behavior “in forums like SDN” so I googled, got sucked in and then bit by the WW bug, and then have stuck around for over a decade now to help pre-vets and hang with my online buddies.
But most are silently observing and not actively posting, and I don’t blame them for that…that lady in the Arkansas thread got tagged so many times and even the NCSU account does too. Idk how they keep up with that, calls, emails, and everything else. Who would want to do this in the evenings after doing it all day at your real job. It’s like why I don’t watch vet tv shows lol.

They definitely do! Which is why everyone should remember to mind how much info they choose to share, especially if you are apply or sitting in school when you post something spicy or controversial...

It’s different now. I’m too busy and can’t post constantly all day which people say is suspicious and I get killed early on which isn’t fun. But me and ski were original noob game crew.

My dad was formally diagnosed today. We have suspected this for a few months now, so it wasn’t a shock, but it still stinks. It’ll be okay and his symptoms are mild (neurologist called it “baby Parkinson’s” at this point) but it really sucks being told a family member has an incurable, progressive, neurodegenerative disease they’re going to have to deal with for the rest of their life.

I’d say a 3-5% increase every year is pretty standard but it’s not uncommon to see like 10% in an occasional year. I know the year after I graduated my school did a really big hike and expanded more OOS seats because they lost a chunk of federal funding.
Not sure what 4k is in regards to the total tuition at your school, but doesn’t really surprise me.
A yearly tuition hike is expected unless you attend a school that locks in your tuition (UF did that once upon a time, idk if they still do). Idr how much UofI increased us every year but I'd guess it was a few grand a year
Also, some resources like the VIN cost of education toolkit so account for tuition increases in their calculations. I’ve seen people say that the VIN estimates always seem higher than what they’ve calculated and this is likely one reason why. It’s frustrating for sure, especially because for every year after your first year, you’re committed and you have to just accept it and can’t do anything else. And I’m sure it’s even more frustrating now, post OBBB, when you aren’t just guaranteed to get that money in federal loans and have to find other sources to pay for it.

I was looking at NIFA and their 40,000 payments for three years of rural vet med services, but tbh at a high debt load with 9% interest (love that) and looking close to 350-400k debt load, with the amount of interest that accrues on that I don’t think the 40,000 a year payments would even amount to much on principal & monthly payments? Or maybe if would just affect taxes forgiven on the tax bomb. It doesn’t feel worth it vs just going the ER relief vet route
40k is more than it used to be, it was fairly recently increased from 25k/yr. You’re probably right that it won’t really reduce your principal balance much because of the amount of interest that will accrue on 350+ debt. But it does put a little bit of money back in your pocket using the governments money to make your monthly payments for those three years. You’re gonna be making payments for many years, might as well let the government cover a couple years of it if you can get it. I’d view it more as a nice little perk for someone who already wants to do rural medicine more so than a smart loan repayment strategy. Like I wouldn’t go into rural medicine because of the VMLRP, but if you’re going into rural medicine, may as well look into it.
I’ve also heard that the administration of the program is also a big of a headache…payments late or not right and confusing paperwork with poor support. It can also be tough to get a job that qualifies…my friend was interested but her boss was the one who got their area nominated because he wanted to apply himself, so if she had applied she’d have been competing against her boss and then it becomes awkward if/when one of you actually get it and one doesn’t.

Eff Parkinson's. In an eerily similar position with my dad. There's nothing to say that can make it easier being a family member on the receiving end of that diagnosis. But I support you and hope that your dad still has many, many years of a high-quality life ahead of him ❤️

I’m so tired of getting ghosted by externship places. Like you agreed to take me, and now can’t fill out a simple form? Dude like please just fill it out and return it to me.
I am getting really nervous about my new job. The principal called me a week ago and gave me a big congratulations and told me I had the job as long as my references checked out. I matched her energy in assuming they would check out and I had the job.
I think it will be okay because I have always gotten good performance reviews and was picky about who I put down as a reference to be sure they would say something nice, but a week is a long time. I am starting to think it may not be okay.
I told everyone I knew and am embarrassed already thinking about having to go around and tell everyone the job fell through (if it did). Everything might be fine, but it also may not be.
