I am getting really nervous about my new job.
I'm sure it'll be fine!! I bet it's just that paperwork is moving slowly, like they got busy and put calling references off to deal with something else in the office, or the big boss who needs to sign off had to take some sick days, or the HR person was on break and hasn't done the offer letter yet, or any number of things could have slowed it down! Especially if they have to wait for background checks or district approval or any other red tape things before they can proceed.

Sending calories and hydration your way @pp9 . That sounds truly miserable.

On a different note— why are there so many supposed admissions faculty on Reddit that never come on SDN— particularly one that says “you get no brownie points for going above minimum hours” (when I thought it was common knowledge, that at least at some schools or with a low gpa, you very very much did)? Am I misinformed?
Wait is this on my sub or

This has been seriously bothering me since yesterday and I just… need to know if I’m being overly critical from the place of someone who has not yet been a doctor on a case.

I got into work yesterday and we had a cat in our ICU that was in bad shape. Spinal fracture from outdoor accident, trying to be semi-cautious with details because idk who I might know who lurks on here. Financial constraints. Complicating factor for the owner is the cat was an ESA to the teenage child. For some reason, it was noted in the record that this kid was an “aspiring veterinarian”. Lots of talk about taking the cat home for management and cage rest vs. hospitalization because surgery wasn’t an option. At one point, I’m minding my business doing my job and I overhear the doctor in charge on the case say “if you need an ESA, I’m not sure you have the emotional fortitude to be a veterinarian.”

Yall, I am l i v i d. For multiple reason. #1: I sat my parents down at the end of my first semester of college and said I got approval from my therapist for an ESA and it was either that or I drop out of school. I fully believe I got an undergraduate degree because I was allowed to have an animal. I also had a lot of therapy and a lot of meds that helped me work things out to being a most of time functioning and capable human. #2 this is a child. A full grown adult is commenting on the mental health status of a child. I can understand having frustrations with an adult but like what??? #3 we cannot make money grow on trees. And with no good surgical option and the only other real option being euthanasia, if the owners are committed, why not try intense OP pain management and rest?

I was in a pretty pissy place yesterday because everyone and their mother was just taking a fat dump on any client who had a complaint or a difficulty with something and I get it. I said something nasty about a client yesterday that I probably shouldn’t have and felt bad about it after getting the whole story. But something about this being such an easy off-handed comment to make about kid is just absolutely rubbing me the wrong way. But I don’t know what to do about it (if anything even) because I don’t know what it is I’m looking for to happen.

1. Comment from the Dr. in charge is coming from a place of complete ignorance on mental health (and is a ****ty thing to say)
2. I'm pretty sure a decent portion of my vet school class had ESAs
3. What you do about it is up to you. You can report it or let it go. If it were me, and this was a pattern of behavior with that particular Dr then I would report it. If it was a one off comment after a rough day I might let it slide.

I think this speaks to the idea that vets can't have 'feelings' or 'emotions' in order to do their jobs. We have to be robots dedicated to the field, nothing makes us sad or happy. We just keep go, go, going. You'd be surprised how many fellow vets think this way, it's not just outsiders.

In the same vein, this is probably also some projection from the vet that said this. Not that what they said is okay, but I wonder if they are in a dark place currently. Basically saying 'This job is terrible so if you need assistance already as a teen, you won't make it in the field that's killing me.' Just my two cents, maybe I'm reading between the lines too much.

This doc is definitely a much more blunt person and doesn't tend to suffer fools well. They've said some things that have made me side eye but this is the first time I've been genuinely like wtf.

I don't think you are. Their elderly mother was sick a few weeks back and it sounded on the more serious side so it's possible that is contributing. I think I'm just stuck on the fact that this is a kid. Not that it's an okay thing to say about an adult either.

Thank you for the input. I'm glad I'm not overreacting but offering the vet the same compassion I'm trying to hold onto for clients is the best move.

Honestly I'm the exact same way but I also am able to keep my opinions to myself. Idk that I would even care enough to comment on the ESA, even if I felt strongly about it. Personally the only time I care about an ESA is when it's in a very inappropriate place/behaving inappropriately while clearly not a real ESA or service animal.

Derail but I also get very irked when police dogs are unable to be managed but I look at that as more of a trainer issue than anything. I saw a few police dogs on ER back in the day and there was one that like could not follow a command...like how does this work in the context of a police situation? At my zoo we also have bomb sniffing dogs that patrol and one of them (a malinois, of course) is an absolute nut case. His handler brings him to me all the time for dumb **** and I'm always saying 'Dude if your dog bites me our OSHA lady is going to have a fit.'

My moving experience over the past few weeks has been unbearably awful. Literally everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong. I can’t even begin to type everything out because it would be a short novel, but it’s taking a huge toll on me. I found out today that my U-Haul u-boxes won’t be delivered for another two weeks, when they were supposed to be here a week and a half ago (they were supposed to arrive before me!). I’ve already had to buy new clothes and scrubs for work because the delivery was delayed, and now hearing it’ll be another two weeks is just the cherry on top of this garbage sundae. Not to mention, I shipped my car and that was also supposed to meet me here but is also way behind schedule and hasn’t arrived yet, so I’m paying $$$ for a rental.

The first day of my specialty internship is tomorrow and instead of feeling excited, I’m completely filled with dread. The last two months of my rotating internship were really tough and I know I’m burnt out, so I was hoping my couple weeks off would help me relax and feel better. Instead, the moving debacle has me feeling more exhausted and stressed than ever. It’s probably my imposter syndrome talking, but I feel like everything going wrong is a sign from the universe that this was a mistake. I know I should be grateful because this is an incredible opportunity and people would kill to have this chance, which makes me feel guilty about not having a good time right now. There’s not really anything to be done about the situation- it is what it is- but I’ve spent the whole day crying and it just sucks.

If you need a kind ear to vent to, I have 2 more days before my residency starts (and honestly will be pretty open all week) so am super available for a video call or whatever you need. Hang in there :cares:

My old man cat turned 16 yesterday and is not doing well. He's a chronic GI guy, IBD most likely but I never pursued biopsies. That's been an issue for years and he's been on high dose pred for a few months now, which has helped his appetite but has not kept weight on him. His fighting weight is like 13lb, he's down to 8.5ish. This past week, his appetite dropped off abruptly...I figured GI things were progressing. Yesterday I noticed some left-sided facial swelling and right-sided conjunctivitis (maybe unrelated), today he doesn't want me near his mouth for meds, he has swelling around his left mandible/submandibular region going into his zygomatic arch/nasal bridge. Even his lip is swollen. No obvious oral lesions but he's not thrilled to have his mouth looked at so my exam is pretty limited.

Best case scenario, this is a raging tooth root abscess (I've never seen a mandibular abscess cause this degree of swelling, but I haven't seen a ton of these tbh), worst case scenario this is neoplasia that was simmering longer than I realized. I'm in his face twice daily for meds and this all seems fairly acute so an abscess seems more likely. He has an appt tomorrow so I'll get my GP's opinion, but if it is a tooth I'm faced with a decision. Do I do a dental in a geriatric cat with comorbidities (IBD, stage 1/2 renal, arthritis, janky thyroid, very thin) who is already not in a great state (maybe partially due to this potential tooth issue, though) or do I consider QOL/end of life? But then I'm considering euthanasia over a damn tooth? Ugh.

All of my previous pet losses have not really been situations where I've needed to make a choice. My first dog experienced sudden cardiac death, my childhood dog has pancreatic neoplasia/EPBDO and palliative care was no longer effective, etc. I want to do right by him and try not to be selfish, but letting him go over a theoretically very treatable problem is giving me pause. Having trouble seeing through the smoke, also trying not to get ahead of myself before my GP has a chance to take a look.

Not looking for medical advice of course, just venting to the void.

It's not over a tooth, its over a multitude of issues that are contributing to a declining QoL and the tooth is an acute factor with that QoL.

Sending hugs <3 I'm sorry.

Teeth hurt. Don’t feel guilty for thinking about euthanasia. Not medical advice, just support for whatever you decide needs to be done. ❤️

Well turns out it's actually a salivary mucocele (can see it under his tongue now). Of course some bizarre thing would happen to a vet pet.

I scheduled Lap of Love for tomorrow, he's not himself and isn't having a good time. One last visit with the GP today to make sure she doesn't have any brilliant ideas, but I don't see him recovering well from a sialocele surgery seeing as how he's already so thin from his IBD.

K well in classic 'vet pet' fashion, old man was okay in the morning (obviously not feeling great but alert and moving about) and my husband found him agonal a few hours later. The mucocele of sorts had ~quadrupled in size in that short time frame. He didn't even make it to his GP appt let alone the peaceful passing I had planned for him. We were even debating just letting him go at the GP appt which was two hours after he died. I can only hope that he didn't suffer or suffocate. Something spicy was going on for sure, though. My poor old man.

And my poor husband. Our tuxedo cat (old man cat's sister, they were best friends) came downstairs and was meowing a lot and seemed a bit frantic, my husband picked up the vibe and went to go check on old man and found him collapsed and held him while he passed. My husband's childhood pets were not always granted the gift of a peaceful passing so husband has had a lot of anxiety over the euthanasia we had planned and our other pets aging. I was really wanting this to be a peaceful experience for both of them. Also for a non-animal person (anyone really, but someone who just isn't used to things I guess), finding an animal in that situation is traumatizing.

I'm so sorry, @pp9 :cares:

I'm sorry @pp9, I hope you and your husband are doing okay! I don't know what words I want here, but it was (sweet?) that tuxedo cat came to alert husband and (important?) that he could be there for old man so he didn't pass alone. I hope that was the less traumatic thing versus husband finding him afterwards. I'm sorry things didn't happen as peacefully as you'd planned ❤️

There’s apparently been cyclospora outbreaks around the country. My close friend from Chicago is currently incapacitated with it. Feel better friend.

Edit to add: Cases of parasitic infection growing in 2 states: Health officials
Also I tested positive for this. It's been a rough few weeks lol. I've been feeling better even before starting the meds yesterday but like what's next because I fully believe in the 'bad things come in threes' thing.

And yes I absolutely had taco bell like ~1 week prior to the onset of symptoms

I had a Taco Bell cantina bowl two days ago, the day before the CDC officially announced a suspected link. Luckily I don’t live in one of the majorly affected states, but crossing my fingers I didn’t make a mistake. Glad you’re feeling better though!

And sorry about your kitty, that sucks.

Oh man fingers crossed. If you start having bad stomach cramps, don't stray from home 😳

>;( 😡 Never ever ever ever ever hire Safe Travels, AMB moving, or PVL van lines for your move. I am never hiring a mover again.
The move we got quoted $2200 for will cost over $5000 by the end of this. I could have gone on a luxury vacation with that money. IF they actually arrive tomorrow as they say they will, it will be over 5 weeks since they picked us up.
scammers, scammers, scammers, I am so angry and I am going to report them to the BBB and dispute at least some of the credit card charges (unfortunately some of it we had to pay in cash).
We literally didn't even have anything valuable. We easily could have sold everything in Texas and rebought here for less than $5000.
This is the worst decision I have ever made.

I just need to vent for a minute about what a ****show home hospice has been for us. My grandma came home from the hospital on hospice last week. She needs 24 hour nursing care. We (my mom, my aunt and myself) have been taking turns staying with her at night. My mom hurt her back. I hurt my hip. My aunt hurt her knee. My mom got laid off unexpectedly on Friday and it’s a blessing in disguise because I am not in a position where I can take time off work. I work about 90 minutes from the grandparents’ house and have 3 sick days to last me until the end of the year. The grandparents live over an hour away in a rural area. I am really worried about my mom driving on the country roads while sleep deprived. It is really easy to fall asleep driving out there because it’s 40 miles of straight corn from their house to hers.

They arrived, broke our railing, and did not assemble anything like they were supposed to. Every single box was crushed, and all my handmade pottery was shattered. Many of my books were also damaged beyond repair.

That is absolutely awful. I would refuse to pay and make sure to document everything.

it is not working out with kitty and i feel like a horrible person contacting the rescue to let them know that the foster-to-adopt isn’t working.

i haven’t slept at all, and her yowling had the dog up all night restless and pacing and on high alert. i had to sleep in the office at my desk just to get her to stop yowling.

i feel horrible and like the worst person in the world, but clearly in the current set up of our apartment and how the dog is reacting to everything, now is not the right time. luckily she is young and incredibly sweet so i have no doubt the right family will come to her

It’s a bummer, but the time in foster will have hopefully revealed other good traits that will help find the best long term home for her!

for sure. her foster before we foster-to-adopt-ed had a small toy dog and they got along super well. she was playful and had full reign of the house and really thrived in a home where someone was constantly there for her.

unfortunately, we have a larger dog (50lbs), she has been confined to the office while getting acclimated and we are constantly in and out. we came to the realization very quickly that we are not a household equipped for a cat at the moment, and instead of dragging it on and “lets see what happens” we are recognizing that it’s not working out. the middle of the night yowling especially.

but like what's next because I fully believe in the 'bad things come in threes' thing.
Welp, euthanized my old man rabbit yesterday. That would be #3.

He became acutely lame the night after we lost my cat, and his right hind foot began to swell. It got worse through the weekend despite meloxicam and his appetite tanked sunday. Xrays yesterday showed a spicy lytic lesion on his toe and his entire tarsus looked sus af so I let him go. He's the oldest rabbit I've ever heard of personally, he was at least 12.

House is feeling very empty and our daily routine is drastically different already so I just feel so off, like I'm constantly forgetting something. We'll be okay but man, two animals in less than a week.

Sorry your family is going through this. FWIW, I do believe you could qualify for FMLA under these circumstances.

Thank you. The problem is that it’s an internship for grad school and not an actual paid job covered by labor laws and I need to finish at a particular date for my actual job, meaning it can’t budge. I feel bad, but my mom ended up not looking for another job and staying home, which she was not happy to do because she has a hard time with medical situations, but it is what it is. Any other time, I would have done it.

Baby is approaching 20lbs and my back is continuing to get worse. He also wants to be rough-housed and thrown around like a boy. I'm not sure what I can do about this and it makes me sad to think maybe soon I won't be able to play with him like he likes. I've brought up to Drs over the year my back and they're pretty much like "whelp there's nothing we can do bc surgery might make it worse, try lidocaine patches!" I'm having back spasms daily and they make me feel like I'm going to puke from pain. Maybe I should see a neurologist again?

tldr: old neck fracture, syrinx, chronic pain, idk what to do anymore

edit to add: for some reason being pregnant made it way better (stem cells???) but since i've been pp its gotten a lot worse. Can't constantly be pregnant lol.

Who are you seeing for it now - a GP? Ortho?
When I initially broke my spine it was around 2018 when I was in undergrad (car accident) - I was seeing an orthopedic surgeon in Tallahassee. I was in a neck brace, had a contrast MRI, the whole 9 yards. He was pretty good but obviously he wasn't going to be doing long term management. Told me to get it rechecked via MRI every few years (lol $$$$$$). I managed flares with prn muscle relaxers and lidocaine patches.

When I graduated and started vet school I had to move to Gainesville. I was being managed by my GP who was kinda dismissive about it all. She was like everyone gets arthritis!

Since moving I haven't seen,,,,, anyone oops. I think I'm just nervous about being dismissed again. Also money. But since I got a well paying job maybe I just need to get over that.

That's understandable. I haven't seen anyone for my chronic condition in years because of the trauma from being medically gaslit throughout the process of diagnosis, so 100% understand. I don't have experience with a spinal fracture specifically, but when I needed a laminectomy, I always found that ortho was the most responsive to my concerns. Hopefully you can find a good option near you to manage it and play with your son however you want :cares:

Ugh, i'm sorry. I feel like its so common for chronic conditions to be ignored. They're like well you look to be managing fine! No, i am hiding how much pain i'm in daily. There's a few orthos near me I will check out, thank you for the recomendation!

That takes a lot of maturity and courage to recognize when something just isn’t working, @vampyrica. I am proud of you. I am sorry this didn’t work out though.
i appreciate you so much.

kitty is back with the foster and i cried the whole way there and back. curse these tiny creatures for so quickly stealing our hearts. on the upside, i know it wont take long for her to find a loving family that will fit her needs. and now we know that axel needs additional training. like big time

What about a PT/osteopractic as well? I saw one for chronic neck issues and ti really really helped the built up tension in the muscles around my neck injury, which in turn alleviated some of the chronic pain. FYI osteopractic isnt like a chiropractor, they're different as I'd not had good experiences with chiro. I needed the focus on the muscles not the bones/joints.

I didn’t even know that existed! I will look into it! Thank you!
