hi

i was wondering how people are using this pathology text for the boards.

It is in outline form, and extremely hard to read in my opinion, so i was wondering if people could give me some insight on how to use it.

complement with goljan audio or first aid or dit or suck it up and read it straight through?

btw it's probably impossible to annotate this text right?
my test is in mid june.

Thanks

I can't stand reading that book. I'm listening to his lectures, reading the blues in the margins and the text within blue boxes, and just using it for pictures. The book is ~600 (?) pages long and not easily readable at all.

The book was something I def had to get acclimated to at first. At a certain point though, it clicked and one method I used to get there was to listen to his lectures while following along with his book. They don't match 100%, but it's close enough. Annotate while you read along to get that extra bit of sensory studying, and maybe even refer to the first aid page and cross ref. as needed.

I'll see how the book turns out in a few months, but from past posted experiences it seems you can't go wrong with it.

This is exactly what I'm doing. Still getting used to the format though...

I agree that it's dense at first, but believe me...you will eventually get used to it. I remember it being almost unbearable to read in the beginning, but now I feel I can move through it fairly efficiently.

Think about why it's dense in the first place - after all, Goljan essentially centrifuged Robbins down and chucked the supernatant, leaving you with nothing but raw, boards-oriented pathology. I've looked through BRS Path and I'm not sure it's any easier to read either.

the best way to use it is to read along during course work during the school year. Read each chapter about twice during the corresponding block. That will acclimate you to the format and you'll learn a ton of stuff that they don't always teach 2nd year. Then read it again during your dedicated study time--that'll let you recall the stuff you already learned and cement it. Trust me, it's worth your time.

This is what i have been doing. I pretty much only used this book as my resouce for our path course. I filled in his audio and also used uptodate to clarify things I didnt understand. For pictures i used webpath...... Got through most of the chapters 3 times before each test, with the exception of the first 4 b/c I was still feeling out Robbins on our first exam....we have a path shelf coming up in a week and was hoping to get through it again for that. As far as boards studying though, im wondering if its even necessary to read again bc it is so large. Maybe just gonna read FA and then hope the times I read goljan before will stick....id unno tho, what do you think?

I have started reading the book. This is my first time doing 3rd edition. I have been reading for past 7 days now and done with half of it ( going to start GI today). I put in 4 to 5 hours a day.
It is worth going through to clear you concepts.
Errh.... half more to cover...

yes, read through it again. FA is not nearly the holy grail most people believe it is.

Would it be possible to annotate RR pathology into FA? Have anyone tried this approach before?
That would be an inordinate waste of time.

I am marking the pathology topics of FA - and reading Goljan 3rd ed for the same - while annotating FA. I am listening to the corresponding audios on some topics( I marked). Afterall RR is also like FA- High yield facts in point format.

Pros: It kind of covers most part without the monotony of passive reading. Also review of RR wont be needed again except for images. ? Separates step 2 topics.

Cons: It feels like it takes for ever. Frustating. Is there a choice?

What would you guys say is a better use of time? Going through RR Path extensively, or using that time to do more questions/go through more passes of UWorld questions? I'm taking the exam in late June and haven't touched RR Path at all during the school year. I plan to listen to his audio and use BRS path -- would you guys say that's enough for a competitive (>240) score?

Friends have told me that if you know RR Path cold you'll ace a good portion of the exam. I find that I remember more of Goljan's jokes from the lectures than i do the material.

Hi,

I believe its a great book(RR-G) to go through, it will definitely strengthen your concepts.

If You absolutely do not have time to go through it, I would say, atleast go through the margin notes and pictures.

Good Luck in your studies
