Just curious, for the 100's of American students that leave for medical school in Australia, Carrib, Ireland, etc, is this moreso on the whole because such applicants were unable to secure positions in even US DO schools or they were more interested in the MD?

Just curious on some thoughts

if you do your medical training outside the US, it's difficult to get back in for residency and future practice... so most people who go to med school outside the US do so because they intend to practice in that other country or they perceive they won't get in in the US. in my experience, most people who initially were thinking MD would pursue DO acceptance before leaving the country, as long as they felt they had a shot at being accepted.

This question is going to be impossible to definitively answer. It is going to be based on a lot of personal experiences. Personally I would bet that those who go overseas for school prefer the MD. I've seen a few of those, but none that couldn't get in DO that then went overseas. I'm sure this would differ by region, exposure to DO's, and any number of factors. Again, this will be impossible to really answer.

With the number of seats in US medical schools rapidly growing, and residency position spots mostly remaining unchanged, the percentage of foreign medical graduates obtaining US MD residencies will likely decrease significantly in the next few years.

Keep this in mind when considering leaving the country.
