RAVE HERE thread

Just booked a quick little weekend getaway trip for the boy and I to Philly for two weeks from now. Can't wait to show him my city and do some of the touristy things I never got to do while I was in vet school.

Today is the first day it has even slightly felt like fall! It's definitely different here than where I grew up or did my internship, but today it's in the low 70s so I came home from work early (on a study week, not clinics, thank goodness!) and opened all the windows in the house. I will have to study this afternoon to make up for it, but it's such a beautiful day out I couldn't stay trapped in a windowless office.

It has been stupidly warm this October for us. I think the other day we broke a 50 year record for high temps. With the humidex it was 79F here today. Which is stupid.

I've maintained a love for cows since, like, my junior year of undergrad and every time I work with them I just love them more. I don't know if I would be comfortable making a career out of working with them but I take my cow time when I can get it.
I love cows. While I would never do herd healths/preg checks, I liked dealing with other cow med.

I won't ever be a cow vet (hardcore city girl for the foreseeable future), but I still enjoy being around them and seeing them at fairs and I still say hi to them when I drive past farms (other people do that too, right?).

Haha yes! Every time I pass cows, I squeal “Hi cows!” And horses are “HORSIES!!!”

They say "Hello" to you, too. 🙂

I have a four day weekend at the end of next month and a client is letting me (and the dogs) use her beach house. So excited. I hope the weather is still decent but honestly I'm okay with the thought of just curling up on the couch with a couple books and avoiding all people 🙂

I'm 99% sure I'm buying my first car this week! 😀 I looked at one this morning and we're checking out another on Tuesday. I'm so excited! I was pleasantly surprised with the one I saw today - it's a slightly younger version of the car my dad drives and the fact that he'd be jealous of it is a big selling point, as evil as that makes me. 😛

At the last minute, ask for all weather mats to be thrown in. Works every time. Unless your already getting an all-weather package. Then it would have to be something else.

Edit: Just realized this post was a bit old. Sorry neither car worked out!

I'm still looking. There's nothing promising at the moment. 🙄 Thanks for the advice!

Tiny raves:
1) Tech's boyfriend is DDing for the science center Halloween party tomorrow night, so I'm saving on cab fare. He is our favourite person ever right now for agreeing to haul our drunk and glittery butts around town. My boyfriend also offered to DD. They are both very brave men.
2) After four stores, I found the perfect wand to go with my faerie costume. It's hot pink and lights up. I bought it at Claire's.

I'm looking at another car tomorrow! It's ~2 hours away and we only arranged it today, so I don't have cash or a cashier's check to bring with me, and I can't get either before Monday when the bank opens. 🙁 I'll either have to make another trip up to buy it (if we decide to), or convince the seller to trust a normal check.

It's a red volvo, and both the other cars I've looked at were red, so I'm beginning to sense a theme . . . 😛

You could try doing money orders instead if the seller won't take a regular check. Western Union should be open and does them in denominations up to $1000 (I think).

This is amazing on so many levels.

Rave: I just got home with my new used car! 3-ish hour round trip, but it was worth it.

Umm, not a rave . . . I thought I was following my brother's car but I somehow got behind someone else (in the city I work in, so I should have known where I was) and I followed them home. On the opposite side of town from where I was supposed to be. Whoops.

After initially refusing my claim, my pet insurance finally came through with our reimbursement. After the first claim was denied since the insurance claimed it was all from a separate preexisting condition, the vet that did the dental wrote a terse letter explaining every medical decision she made and how it specifically did not apply to the preexisting condition. I figured they'd try to get out of paying me agin or at best they'd give me about half the bill back after my deductible. But they ended up covering almost 70% of the total. I've now gotten back more than I've paid towards the policy, so that's great. Still a little frustrated with the whole process, but at least they paid what was right.

I don’t know if it has been discussed on here yet, but I think it’s awesome that Banfield is rolling out a student debt relief program To help combat the excessive loans we get. There are definite draw backs to the company, but hopefully it is a step in the right direction for all of vet med to work towards helping lessen the debt burden we have.

Interesting. I hadn't heard about it. Do you know any more details?

I think it was just first announced like last week with a 'details forthcoming' promise. I saw a current Banfield employee talk on Facebook about a refinancing of loans through Banfield, possibly banfield paying a portion of your loans, and if you did the student job program getting an extra one time payment towards loans. But that wasn't anything official, just a post on a facebook group.

Almost makes me want to consider selling my soul 😉

I got an email recently with details:

1. Monthly contribution of $150 straight to your loans.
2. $2500 for every SJP, year as an ambassador, and externship you do while in vet school up to $10,000 as a one time stipend
3. Low interest refinancing options

Interesting, interesting

I imagine though if you refinance through them you'd no longer be eligible for things like IBR or PAYE

No clue about refinancing or how any of that even works. I don't think you are required to as part of the program though, I think it is just an option. But still monthly payment and stipend if you're involved in the company during vet school... that's pretty cool. Would be even cooler if the rest of vet med somehow follows suit in debt relief.

Yeah...I don't think most private practices would be able to do something like that though. One of the benefits to being corporate.

I scored a $150 sleeping bag from REI's garage sale for under $40. And the reason it was returned? Someone bought it, tried it in their living room, and didn't like it. No actual damage or defect to it, and it's effectively new. So the 45 minutes I spent digging through giant cardboard boxes haphazardly stuffed with sleeping bags in varying condition and of various models/brands was totally worth it!

Those numbers are drops of water in the ocean.

Not only that, refinancing makes you ineligible for IBR/PAYE, which would destroy a good majority of vets.

Not worth it, they need to take it back to the drawing board, but at least it is an attempt.

I have done this.

Tuesday my dog stayed the night at our teaching hospital for an ultrasound and CT scan of a possible mass in his iliopsoas. Started retching during his morning walk. His student rushed him to the ICU where he presented cyanotic with a BP of 48 and x-rays confirmed GDV. Was taken right into surgery (where GI and muscle biopsies were taken). Recovered great and came home today.

Raves:
1. A+ to dog for bloating in a teaching hospital
2. Pet insurance covers 90% of this

Tried last year to get approved for a home loan and it failed miserably.

Tried again a few days ago with a new mortgage broker..... got approval instantly for way more than what I can afford.

Let the home looking begin!! 🙂😀😱:smug::heckyeah:
The situation might be different in the US, but I know myself and a bunch of my friends have had pre-approvals for x amount, only to get denied when it actually came time to sign the paperwork so hopefully you don't run into any issues.

Yeah, I have heard of that happening to quite a few people. I am working with a mortgage broker who has worked with professionals with large student debt burdens before. So, hopefully, this not being her first rodeo, I will be good to go. 🙂

Brokers are definitely better than banks and that's how I did get my home purchase done, so hopefully no hiccups for you DVMD! 🙂

My rave: I got my new car today and I'm so excited. She's gorgeous. And I can start it from my bedroom despite my apartment complex's huge parking lot. This is going to be delightful in January when it's -20C out.

I've been at the new job for about a month. My dad just commented on how much better the hours are and how much happier I seem. Definitely have some gripes about the new place but overall I'm so much happier. Switching jobs was most definitely the right move. 🙂

Doesn't sound like a rave but it is: A blood blister on each of my big toes, bruised and swollen heels, getting choked, getting slammed to the floor multiple times, and a punch to the temple later I am officially a 2nd degree black belt. I may or may not have had my boyfriend who also tested and earned his 1st degree today (yay!) carry me out to the car fireman style because my both feet hurt so much. (Don't worry 9 hours of rest later and some Advil I think I'm going to survive 😏)

Relatively minor rave but am rolling my student loans into a line of credit with 3% lower interest rate. It may not seem like a lot but damn

Also our business has been at break even or better for at least 6 months. And our busy season is just starting

A mentor/friend of mine was admitted to the ICU in very bad condition about a week and a half ago. I just got back from visiting him at the hospital, and he is awake, chatting, cheerful, and able to function pretty darn well considering. Diagnosis still pending, but so so so SO beyond happy and relieved that he is still around and improving so quickly. 😍:biglove:
