After reading all the horror stories about lab environments on here I’m feeling like I won the lottery with where I ended up.

Haven’t even officially started yet (just been attending meetings and helping where I can until the school year is over) but everyone is always incredibly nice, makes an effort when presenting to dumb it down or explain it in a way I can understand, and they already frequently invite me out to group social things outside of work. The head of the lab has won several awards this year for mentorship/supervision.

Hopefully things stay this way; it just seems like a very cool group of people doing really cool research.

Are you doing a dual degree? What type of research?

Hopefully things continue to go smoothly! I've heard some lab horror stories from other students in my department, but so far I haven't experienced anything too different from normal workplace stress/miscommunication.

I'm just a summer student, not doing dual degree. I'll keep an open mind but I am 99% sure that I have 0 interest in a research career or PhD haha. (I think I will enjoy the summer, I just don't think I would want to spend my life in a lab)

It's Onehealth stuff, mostly on Virology. Mix of fieldwork and benchtop work.

There are currently no publication requirements for ACVP. But with that said, my program requires three papers in "publishable format" in order to get your residency certificate, which essentially means at least submitted.

I submitted my first article, a case report, to the journal back around Christmas and that one was accepted with minor revisions too. This one was #2. I'm currently hounding a microbiologist to finish his portion of paper #3 so I can get it submitted. I've been hounding for months but recently started nagging harder since I'm out of here in 75 days (but who's counting...). Started a short what's your diagnosis type paper as a backup so I don't get held up if that person doesn't come through in time.
 
My dad and I had a broken relationship for 3 years following my parents’ divorce. Broken is actually putting it lightly. We didn’t talk really at all, and if we did it was less than amicable. In January we had a huge fight that actually ended in us talking over the phone, and we both said our piece and apologized, pretty much ending 3 years of malice very unexpectedly. I got dinner with him, we talked for a while about light things, and then I saw him and a couple of my aunts about a month later. We talk on and off now but I haven’t seen him in a couple months. Still rebuilding the relationship and everything.

My birthday is Wednesday and I’m sort of at a point in my life where I don’t care at all about it. I have other things going on and I don’t feel like devoting an entire day to it anymore. But today I got a couple cards in the mail and one of them was from my dad. I didn’t expect that to begin with. I opened it and there was a check inside, which was also completely unexpected. The card says “4 out of 5 cats don’t care that it’s your birthday. Okay, it’s actually 5 out of 5. But I care, and that’s all that matters. Love, Dad.” I’m just so happy that I finally repaired my relationship with my dad and can move on to the next chapter of my life without this huge black cloud over me. I’m sitting here a crying mess sloppily eating pizza and I’m actually happy.

Happy (almost) birthday!
 
So I felt like all my finals went well except for one where I like imploded. Which was weird because I studied for this exam the exact same way I studied for the midterm and did ok on the midterm. Well, got grades back today and I passed! Not super well, but enough to finish with a B- in the course which isn't bad considering how badly I felt like I did on that test! Actually only did 10% worse on the final than I did on the midterm 😛 Maybe my imposter syndrome can take a break now (probably not, but live in hope!)!

On a similar note, I did much better than I thought on the only final that felt sketchy while I was writing it (I'm going to assume we're talking about the same exam) and actually pulled my grade in the course up. Gives me hope for how the rest of them went, since they all felt better than that one.
 
The pre-health department at my school gave me an "outstanding pre-health student" award and I got a little bit of money with it and I'm just so happy to be recognized by them😍

I just had an awesome conversation with a recruiter, who coincidentally has a daughter that is pre-vet. Also getting ready to start summer graduate courses. The company offers tuition reimbursement, so if I decide to pursue a master's down the line, they would support it if I were to get hired.

That being said, I'm done with SDN for a while. I'm so excited for every one of you who have been admitted to vet school this year, but simultaneously it's a little difficult for me to read about it. I'll be back later on during this next cycle, since I still plan to reapply. I don't have social media (including Gail's instagram, I deleted the app), so if anyone who doesn't already have it hopes to keep in touch, please PM me for my number to text me. As always, I'm lonely as **** and can use the company. I love you all and wish you nothing but the best.

While not exactly the same situation, I have to admit that I can definitely relate to many of those feelings. Even well over a year later, I can barely stand to look at the c/o 20XX threads (especially 2020) because it hurts too much and brings up powerful feelings of inadequacy, and I’ve certainly considered leaving SDN altogether because I don’t feel like I have much to offer here anymore. I also just think that my negative experience in vet school had colored my perspective so much that I come off as a huge downer all of the time, and I know that people (especially the pre-vets) probably don’t appreciate that, even if I do think that they need to hear realistic accounts of being in vet school and paying the loans back and just how hard that all can be sometimes.

Anyway, I’m rambling. I’m really excited to hear about this amazing opportunity for you! I’m crossing all of my appendages that it works out and that you can build a future where you can honestly, genuinely say that you are satisfied—whether that future involves veterinary medicine or not.

Most importantly, know that you’re never alone and that we are all rooting for you, even if you choose to not come back to SDN. You deserve happiness.

For something as massively helpful as this site, I would encourage you to set up some sort of donation service for it. I don’t know about patreon? There must be something. You deserve some dolla bills for your time, especially with something people can use.
 
I’m on a mandatory week of clinical experience at the hospital. I’m currently in ophtho and have really been loving going back to clinical experience. We had rounds yesterday and they asked what the signs of Horner’s are and I was SO HAPPY that I knew the answer. It’s almost like I’m doing all this crazy coursework for a reason... :whistle:

I vote for cutting hair off again. I like the short hair cuts you’ve had previously! But I say that as someone whose hair is currently 3/4 down my back because I can’t decide if I want to go short or not :laugh: so I may be living vicariously through you 😉

But for real, something simple like a new hair cut can be a big mood booster when you’re having a hard time. So if you want something new, I say go for it 🙂

Have you ever considered going into IT? You have the skills for it and you could be making a good salary in that field. Seriously you should look into it.

Like coffee? said, I know several people who got degrees in something else, usually some sort of engineering, and decided that it’s not what they wanted to do. So they went to a summer program at a coding school and basically did crash courses in coding to get enough formal education to be competitive in the IT job market. They’re not expensive, don’t take a lot of time, and help teach you things in a guided way that you can’t really do yourself. I would definitely look into it, because it almost certainly won’t cost as much as going to a university and taking computer science courses and paying by credit. The little you’d spend getting that short education will likely pay for itself in the ability to quickly put different experiences on your resume.

Edit: I just did a quick search and one common school, the Coding Dojo, is close to what I’m thinking of. The full program which can be done online and is 16 weeks is about $10,000, and 94% of alumni get a job in 180 days with an average starting salary of $76,000. Maybe there’s some spin to that number, but it sounds promising.

I want to know what you guys think of this format and also let me know if there are any other categories of information that you may find useful to include. Do you prefer this more fleshed out, individual page (albeit still centralized) format or the original big huge tables on one page format?

Looks amazing but one of the tables in the middle goes pretty off screen in mobile. Overall looks great! Wonderful job!

I think that the individual page layout would be great. It’s good to be able to hide any schools’ information that doesn’t pertain to you. Why have the info of dozens of schools on one page if you’re only applying to 5? I think the way you have it in the sample looks great. The only thing is that in mobile it doesn’t go off screen a bit and you have to side scroll. But that’s pretty much it.
 
Half rave, half upset because this is bittersweet. I went to an animal welfare association fundraiser on Saturday because my hospital was tabling and I had nothing to do and it was a really nice day out. It was a great day, I got to interact with tons of potential clients and be a good face for the hospital, and actually stopped a dog from choking so that was nice. I didn’t go with the expectation of being compensated. I just had nothing else to do and it sounded fun. Well today I get a text from Amazon saying that my boss had gifted me a $100 gift card. I was only there for 4 hours. I told my boss that I wasn’t expecting it and why I went to the event, and he said it looks like I made the right choice.

I say all of this to say that I’m so happy to have found a place like this to work. It reaffirms my choice to go into veterinary medicine, knowing that practices like this exist where everyone is mostly happy and the team is like a family. Also my boss (who I consider a friend), in addition to holiday bonuses and money for house/dog sitting for him, has given me $375 in amazon gift cards now. It’s just really incredible to be appreciated and valued where I work. But the bittersweet part is I have to leave in three months! Ugh
 
Quite a few raves:
1) Leaving for my first vacation in like a year on Thursday. Heading to Cali for like 10 days with the bf.
2) I've accepted a new job that will begin in September. Hoping it will lead to a better QOL but we shall see.
3) Due to the new job, the bf and I are looking into moving into together and he will likely buy a house so we can have off street parking, in unit laundry, a yard, and not have to worry about my pets.
4) I have a trip to Africa planned for early August.
5) Bf and I just booked flights to Japan for next March. Each of our round trip tickets was under $600 for a direct flight.
 
So, I'm still not a vet, but in my volunteer capacity the vet gives me quite a bit of autonomy on less complicated cases. Tomorrow's case list: Tenrec, Red-Bellied Water Snake, Brown Water Snake, Moon Jelly, and Lined Seahorse. There's a lot that I don't love about how the last 7 years of a DVM/PhD program have gone, but when I get to honestly write sentences like that, I realize my life is pretty effing cool
 
Stupid rave, I know, but my application to consolidate my defaulted PLUS loans that I apparently completely forgot about into my Staffords got approved this morning, so now I only have the one payment I have to concern myself with making every month and, even better, I still qualify for PAYE. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s been such a massive source of stress since being dismissed from vet school. Things actually feel doable now.

Hopefully this means no more collector calls going to friends and family, too. Ugh. That was super embarrassing to have to deal with...
 
Have a tough case which we don't have an answer for yet and the client has taken to redirecting his frustration at us. He wouldn't stop talking enough to listen even when my office manager stepped in to help

I have amazing co-workers though that when today was rough, got me flowers, lunch, cookies, and all signed a card encouraging me. I may not always love the clients but I'm so glad I work with the people I do 😍

Two super exciting things happened this week!

1.) This summer, I am spending three weeks shadowing at a local mixed animal practice. I have worked with this clinic before during my senior internship, so the doctors know me and allow me to practice a variety of hands-on skills as well as assist in surgery. On my first day, I intubated a dog by myself for the first time!! I had attempted intubation twice before, but I was never able to hit the trachea (instead accidentally inserting the tube into the esophagus). So... I was absolutely thrilled when I hit the trachea on the first try!

2.) I am a puppy raiser for a service dog organization. This week, I got notification that my latest puppy in training has been selected for the Hearing Dog program!! This is an extremely selective program, so I am very proud of my boy. Hopefully he will continue to do well in his training, and I will have the opportunity to hand off his leash at graduation in 3-6 months!

Awesome! Intubation is so much fun once you get the hang of it. I recommend trying Airway Ex. It’s an app for human med, but it helped me so much to get confident with intubation. It’s also just fun to mess around with.

And congrats on the puppy! I was in The Seeing Eye so I understand the hard work you put in to prepare him for his training. But I did a project on the organization you raise with, and they do amazing things. You should be extremely proud.
 
- I got a scholarship! No real reason I was told (though my grades are quite good). I'm happy I'll have 1500 less to pay (borrow) next year.

- yesterday I finally ordered new glasses. The frames are custom made Lindberg (@cubsrule4e this is what I was going to message you about several weeks ago but forgot to lol). I'm super stoked because the glasses are going to be legit gorgeous (even tho pretty spendy) and eeee I can't wait till they are made.

- I get to go to Costa Rica this summer for a paid research project this summer. I am super stoked to hopefully make meaningful connections to others outside my class at the CVM and also at a local med school (it's a one health focused project). I need to work on my Spanish for sure. I'm happy I was even chosen to go as only 2 vet students get to go and I'm the only 1st year.

I guess it's sometimes good to focus on the positives as well 🙂

I also have new glasses coming. There was a 2 for 1 sale, so I got a nicer pair for day to day use and a cheaper pair for working with livestock. I had an accident with a horse a few years ago where the pair I was wearing got borderline destroyed, and I didn't have a second pair so I had to wear them like that for a couple of weeks until I could get in to get them replaced. Occasionally I learn from my mistakes....

This is a good reminder to me that I should just wear my old pair when working with livestock lol. I do not want these new ones getting messed up!
 
With being demoted by a year, I'd contacted my externship sites to let them know that I'd hit a snag and wouldn't be able to join them after all. Didn't announce that I'd failed my year, just literally said that. I got an email back this evening from the vet I was going to extern with at Davis. She said that she was sorry I wouldn't be able to come and wished me luck on my rotations. I told her that I was actually going to be taking a year longer than planned to finish my program, but hoped that she'd consider hosting me when I do get onto rotations next year.

We're already planning for me to come down for an externship in my (new) clinical year!
