RAVE HERE thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Posting here because it's 11 pm and nobody I know is awake, but I must tell the world that I got 100% on my organic chemistry final? Kinda want to email the professor and ask if that's an error? That sounds fake... I hardly passed ochem in undergrad.... what is life... anyway... this has me feeling good about this 3rd application cycle. Things are looking up and I'm pretty proud of myself 😀 Ok, end rave.

I was always that weird kid that loved (LOVED) ochem. It just made a lot of sense in my brain. Congrats! You deserve to be proud of yourself 🙂

The most frustrating part of taking it at another school was that it actually made total sense and I just had a really bad professor in undergrad which set me up for failure in biochemistry. Honestly I may have majored in chemistry if I had had this experience 5 years ago when I took it the first time. Ah well, live and learn. [emoji16]

I'm seeing my neurologist today to see if whatever I broke in my brain when I hit my head in September can be fixed, or at least improved. Wish me luck!
Doc had an emergency. Not seeing him until New Year's Eve morning now 🙁 (could have gotten in earlier if I'd been willing to blow off a final, but...)

I loved it too! And loved biochemistry... So much so that I took a second semester of biochem by choice, and then actually did end up majoring in chemistry on top of my biology major because at that point I only needed a few more classes to get the chemistry degree! Took me an extra semester in the end to take one last chemistry lab but I'm proud of that double major!

Oh, oh, I also took an extra biochemistry class cause I enjoyed it so much! And several other ochem/applied them courses! I would not have gone so far as to major in either though haha

Lol @cdoconn

Awww I had a biochem degree. I miss biochemistry at some times

Haha there is definitely a time and a place... although I'm not sure everyone would agree 🙄

Tooting my own horn moment: So I've been working on an online horse sim (like Horseland, Horse Reality or Howrse... kinda like Neopets if you're more familiar with that.. anyway) off and on since 2013. I decided earlier this year I was just going to buckle down and finish it while I have this month off from rotations. I launched it into an open alpha on Sunday and it already has 20 members 😱 Realistically not a lot, but 20 more members than I thought I was going to have  Super excited to see where it goes, but also kind of nervous that the interest in it will die within the week :bag:

I played HL back in the day (late 90s/early 00s) and then Ludus Equinus (which kind of fell off the face of the earth) and then Horse Phenomena. Howrse maybe a little. I'd love to check yours out!

Awesome! You can check it out/join here: Oxer to Oxer. Like I said it's an open alpha right now so things can be buggy and chaotic at times but  I'm hoping it will be ready for beta testing by the end of the month for sure!

Totes had a Neopets account. Still do... technically. I had a gallery of items with tiger stripes... no one is surprised...

Neopets is why I learned to code websites [emoji23] had to have the best looking shop, obviously. And my dad said my silly online games wouldn’t teach me anything useful [emoji849]

Looks like the web server supports HTTPS (Let's Encrypt, yay), so I'd push the https://www.oxer2oxer.com URL and probably do a 301 Redirect on the web server so that HTTP is then impossible. 🙂

Oh, wow, I don’t know you managed to find the time to do this while in vet school. I had a web development job for one of my school’s vet ophthalmologist while I was still a vet student, but it was a very basic, ~5/hr week type of deal and was mostly backend maintenance. I’m still off-and-on finishing up my vet school admissions help website but with working ~60 hrs/week, it’s such slow going that I’ve considered letting it go entirely since I’m not sure that it would get much traffic to justify hosting costs, anyway (though, idk, I did see the earlier version from a few years back getting passed around on SDN and APVMA quite a bit so maybe I’m wrong).

Color me impressed.

I self-learned web design as a kid, too, albeit not through Neopets or anything like that. It’s more common than you’d think. 🙂

That’s awesome. Once upon a time I was super into Horseland...which I’m not even sure exists anymore!

Haha I mostly worked on it in the summers! Coding helps me destress [emoji23]

Yeah I haven’t set up an HTTPS yet cause last time I got an SSL certificate for a hosting service that didn't accept <1 month SSLs my wallet cried  I’ll be doing that for the beta/actual release though!

Apparently my hosting service already sets up an SSL cert or something cause my HTTPS does work  thanks for pointing that out @Stroganoff!

@Elkhart and @Stroganoff in here speaking in tongues... should we be worried? 😛

It's spreading into the RAVE thread! 😛 But really I'm just jealous of you all. My husband does computery things and all of his friends do too. For awhile in vet school we had a weekly game group where just myself and one other person were non-coding-type people (she was high school biology teacher). Then she quit teaching and did a course at Prime Academy and now does coding-computery things so I'm all alone...

AHHHHH.

I interviewed with a corp who has a few clinics around the area I want to move to and was offered a job at one clinic - my second choice as my first choice wasn't technically hiring. I've been dragging out the signing process because this second clinic I really enjoyed myself at but they don't have great tech support and are known for booking tight which may not be ideal for a new grad and I was feeling super conflicted. Especially when another private clinic interviewed me but can't make a decision until February and I liked that clinic a little more than this one...

The corp just emailed me to let me know that a position came online in my first choice clinic today. They are giving me first dibs at it. It's literally right where I want to be. The clinic has amazing support staff, 10 DVMs for me to learn from, is 10 minutes from my parent's house etc etc. The only downsides is it is a small clinic for how busy they are (I can live with that) and that there is on call (but they always have a back up doc if you need help and tech staff on call for if there is a small animal surgical case)

I can't believe how this just came together for me. I feel like the luckiest person in the world right now.

Wooo go SAR!!

One of my goals for this rotation was getting more experience with hoofstock since I haven't gotten to do much with them at all in a zoo or wildlife setting...and today I got to help with a giraffe immobilization procedure! And it went super well. Very happy - definitely needed a win like that in my life.

You look really good @cdoconn 🙂 I'll keep up the "no soda all tea" habit if you do! (Bet?)
thanks Strog! My last one was on Oct 28th, so it’s been pretty good! Temptation has beckoned, but I’ve held off!
Also now that you can hear us better, we'll just have to talk smack in sign language or something.

Edit: Deja vu, I thought I was posting in the Lounge not pre-vet! You cross-posting like farmer. 😡
I’m a good farmer though!

I am cat-sitting for my friend this week and when I went to her house today her kitty climbed onto my shoulders within the first 15 seconds and stayed there for the next few hours! 😍 He's really needy for attention, but I don't mind because I could sure use the extra snuggles during exams!

I get to have surgery two days outta my week twice in a row!! This past week and next week. It has become my haven. I still have a long ways to go, but man, it is definitely my happy place in work. I am still a shaky mess at times, but I adore it. Don't know that I would give up the client time though. Had a Jason Mamoa lookalike with a french bulldog puppy visit yesterday that was also quite pleasant. Too bad my face was an oily mess because I wasn't able to take a lunch or time to refresh after a helluva morning into afternoon. He didn't seem to notice... or at least he was too polite to point out my disheveled appearance. haha
and you absolutely don't want to work in florida, right?

Bless my husband and my profs!!! CRIs have been my Achilles heel. Every time I'd finally triumphantly figure out how to do one aspect of the math I'd realise that I couldn't do the next step. Math isn't intuitive to me, and every time I'd nail down a method that works for me every person I'd reach out to to confirm that I was actually getting the right answers would try to teach me something different, because my method wasn't intuitive to them. I don't care if there's a way to do it with fewer steps... if I don't understand it, but I do understand the way I'm doing it, trying to arbitrarily change my method is not helpful! So I'd just end up confused again. Every time we've been examined on them I've failed those questions, but for a different reason each time as I'd master each part only to get tripped up by the next. Finally, as of the last OSCE, I'd gotten to the point where I was just missing the last piece of the puzzle. And now, after a long morning full of confusion and frustration and some shouting, I think I finally have the whole picture. Now I just have to practice it....

(sorry I'm the literal worst to teach math to, everybody!)

I'm so glad you're getting that figured it out! I know it's been a big challenge for you. Let me know if you want my practice questions again 🙂

I have been watching Facebook marketplace for a while for a pair of Danskos but in Pullman, they have some just none my size. I came to Seattle and found a few in 38 (which is a size smaller than my estimated) but none in 39. However I found time to try them on and decided to go for it, because they were like-new for only $20 😀

We have the same size shoe! I had a pair of 38s and couldn’t wear them because they were too small
Check goodwill! I regularly see them there, but maybe that’s just the Portland area

Interesting! I've never seen a good selection of 8s/8.5s at goodwill. The 38s are a little small but I think are still wearable
