oooooh i'd love to be the peer-reviewer for that one. why not give it a shot at some obscure peer-reviewed journal first?

hell, send it to Nature and NE Medical Journal first for sh*tz 'n giggles? Then keep on moving down the list in the order of descending impact factors, until some random journal accepts it. Then you can publish a paper on how crappy some of these journals are, and I bet a higher ranked journal will take that. (I'm serious, there has been studies like that before done with paper submission of nonsensical fabricated data).

I got to see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy last night! Not only that, but the show was free and they covered a song from The Jungle Book so I definitely knew the words to that one 😛. Afterward we went to the piano bar, a place I hadn't been before and of course it was awesome. This city is already 1000x more exciting than the last town I lived in.

I love piano bars. I've been to two, the one here in my hometown, and one where I will be going to vet school. The one here is so much better, partially because I'm friends with everyone who works there sine I go so much, but it just makes leaving it so much harder. On the bright side, knowing that the one in Gainesville isn't as good will mean I won't be as tempted to go there on nights when I should be studying.

My rave: I got to see Dispatch the other night in Atlanta! It was an amazing show and I am so glad I finally got to see them live.

I'm sure I just got it wrong, then. I only vaguely remember my prof (genetics, ironically) talking about the ordering of names on research papers. I was probably busy checking out the insides of my eyelids.

So it sounds like the REALLY hard decisions have been made: where to publish, what order to put the names. Now I guess I just have to go actually gather some data and start writing.
 
My Aunt is breeder/owner of GCH Dancee Moonlight Fashion (aka: Lola) who took BIS at the Orlando Cluster this weekend. Woo-friggin'-hoo! Sooo proud! 😀
 
Bearby, this one was fun! They kept a spotlight on stage so the musicians could point it at people and comment on them, which was a lot of fun. And then a bachelorette party pulled some guys on stage and did the YMCA. So much fun!

I can't explain how great it is to finally NOT live with my old roommates. The only dishes piled in the sink are just ones that got dirty in the move and need to be washed, and do not have dried crusty food on them. I don't wake up in the middle of naps by a dog barking inside at something outside. I have an air conditioner that can keep up! I don't have to deal with someone else's stuff strewn across the bathroom. I don't live somewhere that smells musty (though I do kind of have to rewash some of my clothes because they stink). I'm pretty in love with this place.

Apparently this is just a really great week. To update on the decorating of the new place here's what all has gone down.

I repainted a table and chairs. They were originally blue, and while it's a pretty color, the entire place is blue so I chose an eggplant color and it looks awesome if I do say so myself.

I then went to Hobby Lobby today to buy some picture frames and art supplies. It turns out they're having a half of sale on all picture frames, even the nice stuff like those boxes where you add a picture to each side and put it on your coffee table. Pretty awesome, so I bought 11 frames 😳 Then I checked out the art stuff, since I want to create some simple designs to hang up around the house and a lot of their stuff is 30% off (score!).

Then I went to Lowe's and used my 10% off coupon to buy some different colors of paint and some gardening stuff. I'm so excited to get this all done!!
 
I just have to post here today!

We got a pregnant foster dog last week and she had six healthy pups last night 🙂 We were on pins and needles because she was pulled from the pound so everything was unknown, and I'm just so excited we didn't lose any and mom and pups are doing well 🙂

I now know where I'll be going after work today.

I'm super excited because I'm done with work in a week and a half and then I go on vacation for two weeks with my family! During this vacation I get to see one of my best friends get married and go to the Boston beer marathon with a bunch of my old friends. I think what I'm most looking forward to is sitting on the deck of the beach house every day with a book in my hand. I rarely get to read any books for pleasure anymore. Anyway...end rave!
 
not so much a rave as a funny story...

I just watched my 8 year old brother grab a handful of dog food out of the container and eat it. He then proceeded to tell me that of the two different kinds my parents have, he prefers one (eukanuba) to the other (flint river). Perhaps they dont feed him enough??
 
Rave: There's nothing like taking the adorable feral kittens you recently trapped in for vaccines and having the restraining technician beg you to unload them on her. Bwahahaa. :meanie:

In other positive news: I've finally found a compounding liquid FAILcat approves of. It's... sugar-free bacon. :eyebrow:

It tastes like an ungodly mix of imitation smoke flavoring and bitter apple spray with a hint of dog treats. (Yeah, I couldn't help myself... I had to sample that mess. 😳)

His name is actually Thomas (original, I know 😉). A relative managed to goad me into fostering him for socialization purposes back in 2004. The "FAIL" is a reference to the (extensive) medical record that rendered him a permanent fixture at the casa de CT. This cat is the feline embodiment of Murphy's Law. (We love him anyway. He's kind of awesome.)

Yesterday was a good day! Found out that I can get the sofa/loveseat set that I want and have it delivered to my apartment, hung out with one of my best friends who is about to get married, and was told that I get to see Andre Agassi play an exhibition match while I'm on vacation and even possibly get his autograph!!!

The furniture is amazing! It's dark brown, blended leather, and oh so comfortable!

My friend and I went to the beach but it started raining so we just sat on a covered deck at a restaurant and caught up, then later we went to the piano bar that I love. I got in trouble with one of the pianists for not participating...called out over the mic "Really, Bearby? Really?" Then someone bought too many irish carbombs for the boys playing so they gave me the extra and made me drink it with a spotlight on me. I love those boys! I'm going to miss them when I have to leave 🙁

Finally, I have had a crush on Andre Agassi since I was a little girl. He was my first "celebrity" crush and my tennis idol. I am super stoked to be able to see him be inducted into the hall of fame and watch him play while I'm on vacation!

Like I said, it was a really good day.

It happens fairly commonly here in Wisco, but mostly with vet students. I've seen vet students doing a bladder stone removal (under supervision of vet), and vet students do neuters (1st years). This was outside of school and not under any sort of extern/internship program.

I castrated a few baby goats for one of the vets I shadow. They were his personal animals and he was holding them while I did it, but I dunno. He's offered to let me castrate client's goats, too. *shrug*

At the clinic I worked at in NJ one of the associate vets allowed a tech to neuter a hospital cat. The owner/head vet was furious. He almost fired the associate vet. He said that it was illegal and if anyone found out he could lose his license.

In Miami, it's pretty common for techs to do procedures that definitely are not legal to be performed by a tech. But many times this is because the tech was a vet in their home country (many times Cuba) and they either didn't want to take the NAVLE or couldn't pass it. (Vets from Cuba only have to take the NAVLE.) I guess I understand the thought process but from stories I've heard these techs basically work as vets at times completely unsupervised which I don't agree with.
 
I don't think the animal being owned or not owned is the issue...

Most states have a written law about veterinary students performing such tasks. Generally it specifies that the student must have successfully completed a certain amount of their schooling (the states I've looked into have all said 2-2.5 years--way to screw with my externship plans). Then there are loopholes for thinks like RAVS trips, but even then, I think the veterinary students must be actually enrolled in school, not just planning on starting in August. I don't think any state would legally allow someone who hasn't even begun their education to perform surgery. That just seems....wrong. Heck, in some states, veterinary students cant even perform injections unless they are under direct supervision and have completed X years of schooling.

I feel like we've had this discussion before. With comments from the same person being the start of it. Maybe TT can go scrounge that up, because I don't remember the details, but I thought someone had posted links to different states laws about practicing without a license.

Breenie- I wonder if there's some sort of loophole with goats = livestock = agriculture = owners can do it themselves? I know a lot of livestock people who do all their own castrations. I vaguely recall something from our Jurisprudence class about how in some cases, the board of vet med doesn't regulate that, it's the dept of agriculture.
 
From some of the scary things I've read in the past, it seems like it you own the animal, there's a lot of "medicine" you can practice on it and it still be technically legal. Practicing veterinary medicine without a license is only a persecute-able offense only if you charge someone money for it in a lot of places (or at least that's what I've heard). That of course, is a s long as you're not doing something cruel enough that the animal control can come after you. But yeah, the vet can easily lose their license for allowing someone to do that, esp with their client's animals and the owner of the clinic can be in trouble too. The fact that they have a license means that the state board can take them away. Unless it's criminal behavior where the police would get involved, it's hard for the board to do anything about anyone that is unlicensed to begin with.

And I think there must be loopholes with LA, because don't laymen do a lot of the dehorning in cattle and castrations of like most LA animals?
 
I know in PA you are allowed to castrate your own cattle. I was taught by a University at age 12 and do all of the cut-castrations that we have that are under a month old. You can't perform castrations outside of your own herd however. Most producers I know band rather than cut and they all do their own.

Hopefully some of the other Kansasians (sp?) can help me out, but I'm pretty sure KS just passed a law about vet students doing spays and neuters outside of the vet hospital. Did anyone follow that law that was going around?

I'm assuming so? The farm I work for does their own debudding, and many other local producers do their own castrations/debudding (I should specify not large dehornings). Most of this is in very rural areas, though, so you know... anything goes kind of attitude. Lots of other shenanigans happen. "Hey doc, how much penicillin can I give my cow before it shows up in the tank?" sorts of things. 😱

Philosophical question: Is this discussion really relevant/useful on the internet? Clearly these things are happening. Bitching at semi-annonymous folks on the internet won't really influence that...
 
At the risk of jinxing it and scaring the sun away.... I think we actually have seasonal weather now. It's been hot and sunny since Canada Day, after months of unseasonably cool damp weather. It's 9 pm now and we're still sitting at 30C, with a nice ocean breeeze that's making it just nice outside. And more sunny weather on the way for the rest of the week. YAY! Summer! 😀

First of all, I don't think anyone's bitching. I also think it's a totally legitimate question on a pre-vet forum to ask if _____ or ______ is legal, esp if it's an activity that some pre-vet students are partaking in. Because it gets really murky (esp between different states) what's legal/illegal for non-licensed people to perform in the vet med world, I don't see why it's not a relevant/useful discussion. If anything, the only thing inappropriate about it is that it's a thread derail.

Some other pre-vets might come perusing on the forum and start thinking that they too should seek opportunities to spay/neuter animals before they start vet school. I think it's beneficial for people to at least know if certain things are legal/illegal. It's up to them then to decide if it's ethical/unethical and choose to do whatever the hell they want.

Okay, bitching was too strong of a word. I was just a little perplexed about this happening on the rave thread. I think you're right that it's a legit question, but in this context it seemed a little strange to me.

No way! It's a paragon of selection. Purrfect for preening and cleaning. There are much grosser things in the animal world 😛

Hey, that's a cool site, thanks. I took a geography class.... Half the final was to take a blank 11x17 piece of paper and draw the world with all countries labeled and correctly placed/sized. I think the cut-off was countries the size of Switzerland and bigger, maybe? Something like that.

It was kinda a fun challenge. Sucked for the people who procrastinated until the last minute.

I paid off a student loan today with my first paycheck. It was only a small one, but it is gone. It also feels good because I am still in my grace period, so I am "ahead" of the game (even though I'm not really).
 
In spite of my horse being a gigantic idiot on Saturday at the biggest horse show of the summer and dumping me on my a** in front of lots of people🙄, the horse was stellar on Sunday. My big, dumb, cheap ex-racehorse beat out a lot of Very Fancy Warmbloods. In fact, even though I flubbed in one of our jumping rounds, our combined score from that and our AMAZING 2nd round managed to pull us up to a 7th place. Which doesn't sound like much, but out of 17 horses? Most of which cost 4x as much money as mine do? Yeah, I'm pretty proud. 😀

And then I got to sleep for 10 hours straight, which believe me, after 4 days at a horse show I needed!

Gratz, Dyachei!!! I had to pay off my wife's student loans. I remember *exactly* how nice it felt to see those go away.

Congrats, dude! Mad respect. My girl is a TB cross, but not crossed with anything fancy or expensive. 😉 You're doing our goofy cheap horses proud!

Going to visit Tufts tomorrow to get a tour and sit down with an admissions counselor! I'm excited and nervous at the same time!
 
After a long absence on SDN, I'm back to posting (even though my dial-up is ridiculously slow.....) and am also self-motivated once more! For quite some time, I've been in a MAJOR rut and I finally dragged myself out (with some help).

And, reading the raves that I've missed out on made me a bit less cranky (can't sleep 😡) - I particularly would love to see that research article by LIS & SOV one day soon.

Headed to Tufts tomorrow to check out my room - WOOT!
